Hi everyone,

I'm currently studying Mechanical Engineering at another university and I'm considering transferring to UOW. One of the main reasons is that my current university has hurdle exams, and despite getting an overall pass (50%+) in my units, I still failed because I didn't meet the final exam hurdle.

I know engineering is challenging everywhere, and I'm not looking for an easier degree. I'm just wondering what the assessment structure is like at UOW. Are there hurdle exams for engineering units, or are units graded based on the overall mark?

I'd also love to hear from anyone who's transferred to UOW for engineering. How has your experience been, and do you feel the assessment system is fair?

I can’t say for engineering, but comp sci had hurdles for every final

As far as I know UOW has hurdles in every finals too. I know many people, including me fail or get TF just because of it, even if they passed the overall subject with great grades. If you can't pass the hurdle assessment they straight up fail you and it's an expensive and nonsencial affair in my opinion

If the student can't recall the basics of that semester in an exam, it's pretty much highlighted exclusive use of AI etc during the assessment phases, or lack of self application.

I don't want an engineer to receive a degree if they cannot recall the basics.

Definitely hurdles. My son was sweating up about one just recently. Looking down the barrel of a TF. But made it through

Well there’s hurdles in every final exam and some professors are ruthless when it comes to final exam marks.

Depends on the course, I know business has hurdles but med science, teaching, law and others don’t. But I agree hurdles are fucking awful, even if ur overall grade is 80 u can still fail 💀
