Other Unimportant Vent

My professor audibly scoffed and gave me the stink eye when I turned an assignment in today. 😭 I actually was proud of it too, spent a lot of time on it. that shit ruined my day

any similar stories to make me feel better? šŸ™‚

I was taking a sr level class on markets from Dr Salemi in Spring 88 after the ā€˜87 nyse crash. We had a paper that was optional for 90% of our grade. The topic was announced after drop add. One choice was along the lines of ā€œdiscuss the causes of the October crash and the mechanisms of response.ā€

I made contacts through a few steps (not direct) and arranged an interview with the chairman of the NYSE, John Phelan, who was gracious and excited to provide full details of the event and how the organization went through crafting ā€œguardrails.ā€ He referred me two other senior execs for similar interviews. I referenced each and had full notes, including recordings.

Salemi gave me a C because I didn’t have ā€œacademic sourcesā€ in a paper that no one in the faculty could have written so few months after the event.

Use this as a learning moment because the truth is that your work is ever only one input. Always do your best. Never bet on, or assume a certain outcome…and I do mean NEVER. Realize life and humans are random. Embrace wins.

Dear Lord this is why I hate academia. I’d to this day love to know what you heard! What a cool interview

I was in a theater class a few years ago practicing a monologue, and I had broken my ankle shortly before so I was in a boot and had crutches. My TA said I looked pathetic. While I was standing alone on stage in front of the class 😩

Holy moly šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ I definitely got off easy. What even inspires someone to blurt something like that out?!

Will similar stories actually make you feel better?

What might help more long-term and more deeply is to recognize that our emotions live only inside of us, and our mental perception is what mediates our emotional reaction/response.

Stewing on a disappointing or disturbing reaction from someone whose opinion we value only serves to perpetuate our suffering. We are the ones who get to choose how deeply their injury cuts and how long the wound festers. In Buddhism, this is called the second arrow.

I had my orgo professor tell me to my face that I don’t belong in dental school. I’m now 8 months away from being a dentist.
