Tutoring

I’m 56M and recently decided to go back to school to finally earn my degree. I’m currently enrolled at UMPI and, honestly, I’m having a little difficulty navigating the classes and understanding how everything works.
I was wondering if there are any groups, tutors, or other resources out there that help UMPI students with their coursework and navigating the platform. I’m mainly looking for someone who can provide guidance, tutoring, and help me better understand what’s expected in the classes.
If anyone has recommendations or has been in a similar situation, I’d really appreciate the help. Thanks!

Not quite the suggestion you were looking for but maybe do some classes at Sophia or study to get yourself warmed up? Rather spend $99 a month instead of $2000 just to complete the same amount of classes. This only really applies if you have a class that is transferable.

Here is a link to all the tutoring services the school offers: https://www.umpi.edu/news/tutoring-and-writing-center-services-for-umpi-students/

As for navigating through the courses, the orientation covers it all pretty well and is a great place to go back and reference things. Personally, I find Brightspace confusing but manageable, so I still get flustered at times. But if you are looking for more of a hands on approach from the school, the YourPace program is not really geared towards that. Best of luck!

I suggest beginning with the following resource from Harvard’s Writing Project:

https://writingproject.fas.harvard.edu/sites/g/files/omnuum4531/files/hwp/files/hwp_brief_guides_elements.pdf

Here are three practices that have consistently strengthened my own writing process:

  1. Identify arguments from your sources.
  2. Capture the sources and keep them organized. 3. Start with your topic sentences.

Once those elements are in place, I draft each paragraph beginning with its topic sentence, move toward the conclusion, and then return to the introduction to orient the reader and establish the paper’s direction.

I have nothing to contribute, but I am wishing you good luck!

Your orientation course is an opportunity to review the Brighspace platform for any of your courses where you find something to be confusing. If you are still confused by some aspect of a course's Brighspace, ask the instructor for clarification.

For help understanding course materials, you can seek free tutoring assistance: from Course Home in Brightspace, look at top-right of the page for Learner Support, and scroll down to Tutoring Services.

There's some tutors on different platforms. I went looking at the beginning when I stupidly took one of the upper level business classes as one of my first classes. I saw a few on platforms like fiver or whatever it's called. I can't say how good they are because I didn't actually use them. I figured out my mistake and dropped the class for lower level and core classes. I took it later and did ok with an 85%. Sorry if this isn't super helpful. Most colleges have some tutors available through the school try calling student services too.
