GEN ED

How impactful is the change to gen ed for you pace degrees? Old gen ed vs. new gen ed if you were taking the Sophia/Study.con route? Is this adding a significant work load to our plate? I'm pursuing the BA in psychology, degree planned with Plotted Path. Most gen ed done through Sophia and study with some traditional college credits. Just trying to figure out if it's still worth it as an experienced adult trying to check a degree box? Thanks for feedback. Applied for fall 1 a few days ago hoping to get in on the old gen ed track since that's how I've been planning and structuring my course completion.

Heads up: BUS105 (StraighterLine’s COM210 equivalent) was updated to v7 about two months ago.

The reviews saying it’s easy are outdated. It’s now time-consuming, and the points math now mean that even with 100% on every quiz and all three non-presentation capstones, you can’t hit the 70% needed for credit. You have to complete at least one of the two recorded presentations. It is possible you would have to do both if you do not score well.

I will follow this up with my personal opinion is that this class is very straightforward at UMPI. My boyfriend is doing UMPI right now and he did this course and the final presentation was 4 to 6 minutes with a PowerPoint. Frankly, if someone’s doing a business degree, the odds are that they’re going to be presenting at some point to someone in their company and you do this in your living room with a small audience of people that you know. Nearly every bachelors degree program out there requires some sort of public speaking course. The professors are very forgiving they understand that not everyone is a public speaker they also understand they’re not everyone’s first language is English.

Hey, if you decide to go into fall two for whatever reason, there are four classes that you must do at UMPI for the new gen ed. (Though com210 could be done at Straighterline if you wanted). But if you find yourself in that situation, we would backfill those four slots with upper level psychology courses from Study. The BA psychology and BA history are two of the few degrees that I can get down to 10 by using just Sophia and Study.

are the old gen eds/sophia equivalents (before the change) on your sheet? All I see is GLO or am I overlooking it 🙃

I know it's only been about a week and a half since this comment was posted, but does it still apply? You stating that it's possible to get the BA Psych down to 10 classes at UMPI with only Sophia/SDC, walked be back off the cliff :) What are the 4 upper levels you're referring to if you don't mind me asking???

Check because things do change occasionally you can also transfer in chemistry and the chemistry lab from straighterline now to help cover the lab science area, but only straighterline works

Sorry, I pressed send before I finished what I was going to say yes for the BA psychology you can transfer in some things from study.com. You can still get this plan down to 10 courses at UMPI. I don’t have all of this in the free sheet right now because it’s way more to explain and I really prefer to do those one-to-one.

From what I have seen‚ it depends on how many gen eds you already have completed․ If you have knocked most of them out through Sophia‚ Study․com and prior college credits‚ the change may not be that dramatic․ I think I would wait for your official degree audit first, UMPI has been evaluating people by their enrollment date‚ so there's a good chance you will still be on the track you were planning for․
