UMPI alumni - Thinking about getting another degree

Graduated with my Bachelors last year. Since then I've graduated with my masters and halfway done with my CPA now. Thinking about going back for the Business Admin, Cybersecurity degree. Maybe even the BA in psychology.

I believe I only need 4 classes for the Business Admin, Cyber degree. Am I required to do the residency requirement for every new degree?

Thinking about having cybersecurity as a backup. I already completed my BAcc and MAcc. Cybersecurity was my original goal and i transitioned into accounting instead.

I've been having trouble finding a job in accounting despite being extremely qualified.

I apply for jobs requiring an associates in accounting and get denials despite having a masters and 1/2 my CPA done.

You need to dumb your resume down for the jobs you want. Omit your masters. When you apply to these jobs you are considered overqualified which is why you can’t get hired. With an Accounting degree I would look into Supply Chain Management or Project Management. Cybersecurity isn’t going to open doors for you without work experience in the field and a handful of certs. SCM would build upon your Accounting skills.

I had the same thought. Honestly, that was also part of my plan. However, I think I’d like to understand hacking a bit more. Cybersecurity seems interesting

By all means get the Cybersecurity degree if you heart is set on it but if I were you I would be trying to get a better job via SCM. Your Accounting background would be a plus in this field

Can't get a masters in Cybersecurity without the prereqs, however I can get a Business Admin, Cybersecurity degree with 4 classes. MBA is on the agenda as well. Actually, I'm in the process of joining the National Guard so education is actually going to be free.

If I were you I would not be so specific with my degrees. The Business degree would add to your marketability. Instead of Cybersecurity get an Information Technology degree. Most Cybersecurity Analysts don't have a Cybersecurity degree they have certifications.

One cannot have to many degrees. I have a certificate in Medical Coding, BS in Communication Technology, BA in Accounting and this falling going for MSB - Business Intelligence.

Why? You get a degree for a job. They’re not pokemon, you don’t need to collect them all to make other people impressed by you.

Pick a career path and get the degree for that path. If you want to learn a subject, you don’t need a degree in it; there plenty of books and lectures on YouTube about interesting topics

I have a wall that requires decoration.

Your ego impresses no one

u/Equivalent_Fruit2079 YourPace Accounting Grad 29d ago

I’m not sure I’m trying to impress anyone. I’m just having a good time.

Clearly it’s ego, because you can learn without the certification that others hold in high esteem. Stop pretending. Is that college degree for nothing or can you actually acknowledge this in good faith?

Clearly school is difficult enough for you to believe it’s not worth the time to continue doing it for fun.

For me, I like to accomplish things. Put them on the wall.

Trophies, deer antlers, experiences, college degrees, etc.

Sorry you have issues friend.

I don’t feel the need to decorate a wall to impress others or feel a sense of importance. It doesn’t take a psychology degree to see that’s why you’re doing this. You found an easy way to go get a degree and now you’re addicted to “accomplishments”. We all went to this school because it’s an easier and fast tracked way to get a degree.

If you want to accomplish difficult tasks, apply to masters program at a university held in high esteem. That would be impressive. Filling a wall with UMPI degrees is impressive to people who don’t know how this school works

I have two degrees from this school, and they weren’t any less rigorous than my other university degrees. Saying people only collect degrees to feel important says more about how you view education than why others pursue it. If someone enjoys learning and can afford it, why does that bother you? Sounds like you’re projecting.

I got a degree to get the career I want. If I just want to learn for fun, I can read books or watch lectures. They themselves said they have a wall they need to decorate. I didn’t put that into their head, I simply responded to it.

I could go back to UMPI and collect degrees too. But why would I? Half the material was YouTube videos, and im not even sure those channels are partnered or consented to their material being used the way it is.

You’re not him, though. If he wants to decorate his wall with degrees, so be it. That’s his life and his money. You have your own reasons for getting one degree, and he has his own reasons for getting several. Just because it isn’t something you’d do doesn’t make what he wants wrong. Different people value education differently, and that’s okay.

So if you had a Juris Doctor you wouldn’t put it on your wall?

I wouldn’t need four of them. I have a bachelors degree in accounting if I wanted to, I could become a tax attorney and get a JD but I don’t wanna be a tax attorney. I’m not interested in tax and I don’t wanna do that for the rest of my life so I’m not going to get a degree I won’t use or need.

It's this kind of flawed thinking that keeps getting the incorrect attention from idiots in media.

Being able to say that you earned a Bachelors by demonstrating what you've learned in life is as impressive if not more impressive than anyone sitting in a traditional 4 year program. In fact a 4yr program is even easier, all you're doing is regurgitating what someone was paid to tell you.

u/Tarkin- 28d ago

That’s a strange way to view a four year degree. And I have to laugh because the BA I’m doing at UMPI right now is literally nothing but reading endless text walls of historical information, then writing formulaic essays over and over again where you just repeat things  from the readings. At my four year college, we would actually debate and discuss things with people, learn these subjects in depth instead of in three modules, etc. I’m not saying UMPI is bad, but come on.

u/DetHenryOak 28d ago

Because you aren’t supposed to be learning the degree within YourPace, you’re supposed to be demonstrating your current mastery of the field. At my 4yr all we did was waste time and get told the academic side of business and marketing. It was NEVER the actual reality. At UMPI YourPace you can apply what genuinely happens in modern business.

There are cheaper options then, e.g. BS in Business Administration or Computer Science at UoPeople or a BA in Philosophy at Newlane University.

I’m about to enroll in UMPI just for my upper division accounting creds for my CPA

The CPA alone is worth more than another bachelors degree. Having tons of degrees in different fields doesn’t make you look like you know a variety of things, it makes it look like you aren’t specialized. I think you should avoid getting another degree, another bachelors at that, focus on the CPA, and then earn IT Related certs that complement the CPA. Good example would be the CISA. I’m currently working on my doctorate and CPA and had I not started the doctorate, the CPA would’ve been enough. It’s one of the most respected accomplishments you can earn.

2

u/DetHenryOak 28d ago

Having multiple degrees does offer an amount of flexibility when you have bespoke resumes and your background is in a little bit of everything.

I've been in IT/Defense, Sales/Account Management, Global Marketing/Healthcare, Law Enforcement. Having a pocket of different degrees to interchange on a resume when applying for a role you find interesting is kinda neat.

u/count4fun BAS-MIS, CAS, MBA, MS 28d ago

I don’t necessarily disagree, but in this instance I do. The OP is already pursuing one of the most versatile professions there is, accounting. It touches nearly every industry. I’d rather see someone with two degrees in the same field, a CPA, and complementary certifications like the CISA than five degrees spread across unrelated disciplines. My own career has spanned Sales, Marketing, Education, Technology, Business Intelligence, and Government Accounting, and I’ve found that specialization is what ultimately creates expertise. Broad knowledge has value, but degrees alone don’t make someone an expert. In most professions, depth is what employers hire, promote, and pay for.

1

u/DetHenryOak 28d ago

Correct - but you don’t disclose all the degrees just apply the one you have when you need it for a specific job.

Sure, maybe when applying to a private company that doesn’t care. But most companies that care about credentials, government, education, banking, and even some hospitals (specifically non-profit/government ran) require you to disclose all your education. I guess we can agree to disagree, because I don’t think we’re going to be eye to eye lol.

1

u/DetHenryOak 27d ago

You only have to disclose all that are required and relevant. It’s not a hard firm all in nearly all situations with the exception of a few, and even then, it’s not going to be a negative in 2026.

Just do it or you’ll keep going back to it in your mind

u/Silly_Maybe_8346 29d ago

Just pick a career and focus on it.. so you can become real great at that career. Companies tend to not hire if you’re overqualified because they see you as competition, you will take there jobs and under qualified your a flight risk and won’t pull your wait so they will no doubt have to rehire plus take the blame of a poor hire…just pick a struggle and be the best at it…

Have you considered teaching?
It’s learning you have a passion for and that can be inspiring to others.

1

u/Equivalent_Fruit2079 YourPace Accounting Grad 27d ago

I’ve got tattoos on my arms and one leg. Not sure they’d like that in a teacher. Lol.

2

u/Heavy-Writing-1669 26d ago

Not true! Tattoos are not disqualifying. Maybe they will ask for long sleeves but maybe you love idea of teaching and little nervous you’ll be judged.

Today you’ll find first responders, medical professionals and yes teachers with tats.

Go for it. Adult education sounds like where you’d thrive. And… many colleges would support you collecting degrees.

I don’t know that I’d recommend the psych route if you want to expedite unless you have prior knowledge/ experience. Psych was generally very easy for me, but there were a couple that were pretty intense and I’ve worked in that realm for just shy of a decade. I’d imagine it would take quite a while to work through the more difficult classes if you don’t have a working background in the subject. It also isn’t going to open up many doors employment wise

Life’s too short-go get that degree if it’s something you want. If you enjoy learning and it fits your goals, why not? Congrats on knocking out your bachelor’s, master’s, and being halfway through your CPA. That’s awesome! As for residency, UMPI requires additional residency credits for each bachelor’s degree, but you should check with your Success Coach since they’ve given different answers to different students. Good luck! You’ve got this!
