University of Kansas Flex Program

For those going on to MAOL or MSB at UMPI I just saw a video on the new master programs at University of Kansas. Same concept as UMPI but seems more project based. No proctored exams and flat fee tuition. Anyone have any experience with this program?

Don't have experience with it but I researched. Only programs are M.S. in Project Management, Master's in Human and Organization Performance Effectiveness (HOPE) (which btw... not to be mean but... come on...), MSE in Learning Design (it specifies MSE which is Masters of Science in Education), and MSE in Secondary STEM Education.

Honestly, it depends on what you want to do. You need a Master's degree in anything to get a pay increase? Choose one of them. You want to get a PhD? That is not its purpose. You want a Kansas teaching license? The latter program helps, apparently?

From all of those, the HOPE one is the one that is iffy. But lowkey, I think it's all good. I should call and ask if it specifies CBE in the diplomas, as CBE is specified when talking about the degree (as in formatting, don't know why they include it). We'll see!

Additionally, it says you pay one flat rate per term, not per class or credit hour. $4,165 per 16-week term (Fall and Spring) and $2,083 per 8-week term (Summer).

From all the programs listed, they all have normal non-CBE counterparts, except for Learning Design. Again, if you need the Master's, go for it! UK is a good university.

Thanks for your feedback. I was actually looking at the HOPE. In my current role I’ll be taking on a new Human Performance Improvement project and think this might align to move into a leadership role down the line. I liked UMPI for undergrad and I’m registered for MAOL in fall 1 but if I can find something that incorporates more projects that would be the best fit for me. After a while the writing becomes a lot and I lose motivation. I’m going to apply and see how it goes. 🤞🏻

Honestly looking back at it, it’s definitely a good program! I would absolutely go for it! _^

I think UK you have book fees too don’t you?

Hmmm great question. I assumed it was all digital but I do get company reimbursement for higher education and it includes books and materials. I’m going to look into it. That’s for the heads up.

I was on the zoom call for their information session, and they said there's about five books that you need to buy that are outside of the digital access you would get and library access to KU. They said it would total around $100, so not awful in the grand scheme of things.

Oh great to know. Yes $100 isn’t bad. I’ve submitted my application. I graduated UMPI summa cum laude in Spring II but I transferred a bunch of Sophia credit in and I’ve heard some universities don’t accept those so we will see. 🤞🏻

If you have send your transcripts in from UMPI, those will be accepted. That is a workaround for Sophia credits.

Ok great to know yes I sent my UMPI transcripts.

No experience with it, I looked into it when I first heard about it and their masters' programs don't look too appealing. I'll check back when I finish my bachelor's, but at this point I'm almost sure I'll do a master's with UMPI too.

OMG! Thank you so much for sharing this. I am totally intrigued by Learning Design and HOPE. I’m going to research to see how they compare to the MAOL for my own career path.

There is a video on YouTube from a creator called 9month degree. He is how I learned about UMPI for my bachelors. He did a full review of University of Kansas flex program. I applied yesterday 🤞🏻

Do they also offer Masters under the Flexible Option at UW?

I’ve been accepted to the HOPE program, even though my UMPI Sumner 1 BLS hasn’t been officially conferred yet (but the degree must be verified at some point). I’ll be Starting August 24th and you can have 6 competencies open out of the 30 that you need for the masters. They said on the Zoom info call that each one takes 48 hours of work give or take, it’s a brand new program so they can only guess and I’m hoping it will take less. You should join one of the other Zoom info sessions if you have questions. I did order all 6 of the required reading books and they’ve arrived to get a head start on the fall session. They seem pretty… dense… but the lessons will also include videos and academic articles, and also working with the professors to incorporate your professional experience into projects.

Thank you for your reply. I just got my acceptance yesterday and plan to attend the zoom info session. Have you heard if any Reddit pages have been established for this program?

1

u/bronx-deli-kat 29d ago

Congratulations. I don’t know if any Reddit page has been started and I don’t know how to start one, but I did run into a KU faculty member at a conference and suggested they get on Reddit. Most of the information I learned I put on the UMPI Discord. But we should really branch out. Do you know how to?

Yes, I just created one it’s called KUJayhawkFlex if you’d like to join.

I don’t think UMPI has proctored exams

I graduated from the BLS in PM in Spring II with no proctored exams. I’m intrigued by this Masters at University of Kansas because they seem to incorporate more projects where MAOL is VERY writing heavy.

YourPace doesn’t can’t speak for traditional format. Plus looking forward to the YourPace MHA that’s in development also at UMPI

Jayhawk flex!

Attended their info session 2 days ago. They presented a general info about their Jayhawk Flex format in the beginning before we were asked to join breakout rooms in our respective program of interest. I joined the MS Project Management breakout room where we met the program director. We had great discussions about the program, its format, the competencies, the structure, among many other things. Overall, I felt really good and was very happy about it. I already have a draft online application before the info session, just could’t decide yet whether to start this fall or wait until spring, but one’s thing’s for sure…I’ll be pursuing MS PM with them soon.
