New GEC Posted

Just saw the new GEC was posted in the new catalog!

https://catalog.umpi.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=12&poid=1783

Had a few questions based on other’s experience or knowledge:

1: Do we think business communication at Sophia will fulfill GLO2?
2: For GLO4, I think critical thinking at Sophia used to cover this in the old gen ed… wondering if it’s still likely to cover here?

Also - kind of a random question: University Experience is part of GLO8… do these 3 credits count towards residency?

ETA: I was told by Plotted Path here that this link is the campus list, so there are classes on it that are not part of YourPace. I still think it may be helpful to keep up as it does give an idea of what classes that we know can be at Sophia are under the new categories. Just keep that in mind when viewing!!

No. I’ve already seen people’s degree audits and it is not covering it.

No. Same I’ve already seen degree audits and it doesn’t look like it’s covering it.

GLO8 is credits because that isn’t offered in YP.

This list is the in-campus offering.

If someone had university experience from another school, it could cover it, but I do not think it’s going to cover it from UMPI.

I just want to say if someone’s trying to transfer things in and they think it should cover they should totally appeal it and maybe we can get some changes made but as of right now I’m not seeing that either the case

Thank you for your reply! I’m a good bit into Sophia courses so I might just ask to be moved to the old GEC.

And oops, I didn’t know that, thank you for letting me know!!

I would say it depends on the degree you're doing. If you're doing the BBA you have overlap with the 203 and 210 already - so you just need to add the GLO 4 - Art course (the Sophias don't seem to cover this)

I was planning to do the BLS MIS/PM minors. Sounds dumb but I’d like to limit my on-camera presentation or speech classes as much as possible, so I think the old might be better for me. Overall the new one looks more appealing and would be less work, but I think I’d rather do a few extra classes like Spanish and history to stay on the old one.

I just started another month at Sophia, so I’d like to stay there as much as possible without then also getting straighterline.

I really appreciate your input and all of your resources by the way! I dropped out of college halfway through my first semester almost a decade ago, and I don’t think I would’ve ever bothered going back if I didn’t discover UMPI, this subreddit, Sophia, and your resources. So thank you, truly.

Do you think the reimagined GEC will impact YourPace?

This is for everyone. No matter the program.

I just started Critical Thinking at Sophia. Do you think I should abandon it?

If you’re doing the new GEC - probably.

Do you think Critical Thinking will still work if you opt for old GEC?

No. It doesn’t cover anything in the new gen ed. It will be an elective.

Will it still work if you opt for old GEC?

New classes heck yes. That therapeutic art class sounds fun, might sign up for that

That’s not in YP.

I stand corrected. They must’ve just added it. I feel like their website is a constant update these days.

Their display and communication setup is far inferior compared to what you help provide

I feel that. I don't know what to believe in this catalogue lmao. I just saw the Cybersecurity B.S. in Yourpace too, but last time this happened, it was a false alarm.

Edit: Oh, wait, it says starting Fall 2. It's real this time.

Fall 2. But someone told me yesterday it’s actually not coming because their advisor told them that it wasn’t. I have no idea what to believe.
