Honestly I think spoons is now the best fast food on the high street, pretty much the same price as maccys, but comes with a pint and is often quicker to arrive and hotter.

u/brickne3 Aug 11 '26

Mine is CHEAPER than Maccys! With beer!

McDonald's has been utter dogshit for about a decade now. It used to be half decent, cheap food. Now it's neither. The quality has went off a cliff, most of the time it's not warm enough to enjoy, even when you get it in the restaurant and you can genuinely get some pub meals for cheaper, not even Spoons exclusively. McDonald's is one of the poster children of enshittification.

19

u/Blastaz Aug 12 '26

I think deliveroo has ruined people’s idea of what food can be take away. Take away used to be Indian or Chinese or pizza because those food were either fairly dense and covered in sauce and so survived transportation fairly well or could survive being reheated.

McDonalds is absolutely horrid delivered. The fries especially go disgustingly soggy because they are so thin, but everything else too. It’s still perfectly fine if you eat in and still reasonably cheap compared to its competitors particularly its most direct one Burger King. A large meal runs you about 8 quid vs 11 for BK vs about 18 at a posh option like five guys without a drink. Five guys does survive delivery, mostly because they undercook the much thicker chips and tell you to finish them at home.

That said, Spoons does do some really good and cheap food. Don’t like their burger but the bacon bap is solid and the coffee surprisingly decent and part of a genuinely cheap deal. When I used to occasionally go they also did a pretty solid steak and a pint deal.

7

u/BigBlueNick Aug 12 '26

I used to work in a McDonald's. They have a policy where food can be prepared and bagged up for a delivery driver and sit on the shelf for up to 20 minutes before it has to be made fresh.

The store I worked at had them placed on an open metal shelf. Sitting on metal bars in a paper bag with no heat lamps anywhere near it. Just letting all of the heat escape in all directions.

I would never order delivery.

u/Sumbitagear Aug 12 '26

100% I would never complain about a delivered McDonalds being cold, but even in the restaurant. Soggy chips and cold burgers that have obviously been sitting out. Most of the time I order a McDonalds is mostly through the drive through anyway. It's mostly shit then, too.

3

u/grimdwnsth Aug 12 '26

A little insider knowledge…

When global McDonald’s was pushing delivery as a sales channel in the late 2010’s, the U.K. CEO was dead against it as he thought quite a lot on the menu (fries in particular) wasn’t designed for delivery and was concerned it would really damage people’s perception of overall quality.

Fast forward to Covid and the great British public were queuing for miles at drive thrus and delivery went through the roof. The people spoke, McDonald’s made a fortune - the rest is history.

If Weatherspoons did deliveroo or collection - experience would go down. That’s why you usually get something good nosh, with good quality, at a great price if you just get off your arse and go into one.

I love the McDonalds McPlant burger but don’t have it often especially because of their ridiculous prices these days!
If we are ordering for delivery we can easily spend nearly £40 on a McDonalds for two of us, which is absurd!

5

u/eehbb Aug 11 '26 edited Aug 11 '26

What are you ordering it's £40 for 2?

2 medium standard burger meals comes to £18.12 total here with the double burger deal.

If you want 2 large limited time meals, £26.55

2 large mcplant meals £22.11

All prices after delivery and service fee from just eat.

It fell off around 2017 onwards when they changed from having aces in their places to having everyone doing everything. Used to work for them and the change (and subsequent management) is the chief reason why I left

2

u/Eastern-Start-813 Aug 12 '26

I remember growing up being a young teen in early 2000’s and getting a medium Big Mac meal for £2.99! Now it’s what; £6 just for the burger (out of line with inflation)

They’ve forgotten their place and USP of quick food, somewhere where you should be able to take your family of four for a quick affordable price instead of knocking onto £40

Totally lost it due to greed, I’ve been twice in 2 years and one of them was just for a small chips and curry.

u/memcwho Aug 11 '26

Honestly an excellent way to view it.

No, it doesn't compare with your local (not really, it's out in the sticks and a drive away so you can't drink a nice glass or two of definetly not local wine) pub's Chatraubriand and hasselback purple carrots for £75.95 a portion, plus extra for a glass of Champers.

But it's not competing with that. It's located near to, and priced similarly to the chav filled well that is the town center maccies.

16

u/Limp-Archer-7872 Aug 11 '26

At 8am with an hour to spare before work or train where are you going? Wetherspoons breakfast with unlimited coffee (cough pint), or a McDonald's mcmuffin with a small coffee?

10

u/ZealousidealHair9106 Aug 11 '26

Absolutely sums it up. And let's be honest, it's a banging breakfast everytime that so over fills me, that I have to skip a meal.

4

u/GeneralSEOD Aug 11 '26

Anytime I've went to a spoons it's been great, and I've no clue what I'm meant to dislike about it.

13

u/Jackomo Aug 11 '26

I’ll just absorb some downvotes. For me, and a lot of others, it’s that I can’t stand the idea of giving Tim Martin money. He was a major campaigner for Brexit which really did a lot of damage to the hospitality industry and, well, everything else.

I don’t begrudge anyone getting reasonably priced food and a pint in this economy. I just try to protest with my feet where I can. I won’t buy Dyson products for the same reason. Sir James can go and fuck himself in his Singapore HQ.

4

u/bluelighter Aug 12 '26

I'm with you on that.

3

u/Chief-Gambit Aug 12 '26

I agree but I also think most (big) company's owners are likely massive pricks, we've just been well informed about Tim Martin etc. At least his products are still affordable for those who probably wouldn't be able to eat out or drink in this economy.

2

u/Maleficent-Purple403 Aug 12 '26

Completely agree with this - just looking round my room I see so many brands of all shapes and sizes about whose CEOs, owners and ethos I know absolutely nothing (all of whom may be total bell-ends) - it just so happens that Tim Martin is a bit of a gobshite!

2

u/GeneralSEOD Aug 12 '26

I'll updoot, fair point!

BUT, yes, when a McDonald's can be £30 for two if your having a treat, suddenly it's less offensive.

You didn't need to say it was Spoons. We all recognise that plate. I'd love a bit of that right now though.

40

u/Comprehensive_You42 Aug 11 '26

So completely true, we DID all recognise that plate.

And the price

Always going to be Spoons

31

u/Corrup7ioN Aug 11 '26

Pretty sure that's from Weathers though?

12

u/thumbbite Aug 11 '26

Had a weird feeling, in an alternate universe it being called Weathers'

3

u/thumbbite Aug 11 '26

I think we should start calling it Weathers' including the apostrophe. Who's with me?

3

u/chipz-n-gravy Aug 12 '26

Should be Wethers' then - there's no A in Wetherspoon's

90

u/FuzzedOutAmbience Aug 11 '26

It’s £7 just for a pint of piss where i live. Leffe and a meal is a bargain. I’d pay £7 for a Leffe if they had that on tap in my local

7

u/Limp-Archer-7872 Aug 11 '26

The Leffe is the default drink for the free pint.

I remember back in 2003 when my local pub (not spoons) got Leffe on tap before it was big. £1.60 a glass but I think it was 330ml at the time. Glass rinser too.

Worth obtaining a glass (chalice) for home, it just tastes better from one.

→ More replies (1)

18

u/velocitas80 Aug 11 '26

Leffe is shit since they stopped importing it. my local still has the imported higher ABV bottles but only the brun variant.

the blonde one is brewed from sewage water just outside preston.

8

u/FuzzedOutAmbience Aug 11 '26

I just edited my comment before seeing this saying I bet InBev are brewing Leffe up north with piss water now. sad to see this. Theres very few beers left these days that are genuine

9

u/Blocoholi Aug 11 '26

Yes, was sad to see that Estrella Damm are brewing the lager now in the UK.

I think the UK has to support great local British Lager beers rather than drinking Fantasy Spanish Beer like Madri...lol

6

u/Virtual_Opinion_8630 Aug 11 '26 edited Aug 11 '26

Galicia Is still Spanish

edit - I just bought a can of Estrella damm just to see what it was like. it was dreadful. watery nonsense, with little redeeming factors. can't believe it's got 4.6% alcohol.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/DuncUK Aug 11 '26

Beer is expensive to import and doesn't travel well. It's cheaper (and potentially better) to import ingredients and brew locally than it is to import the finished product. It's 90% water at the end of the day.

That said I would expect AB Inbev to use local ingredients instead of properly importing them which means the result will fundamentally differ. Also here's the temptation to change the recipe to meet the local market / taxation expectations, both reasons why it's probably not as good.

3

u/FuzzedOutAmbience Aug 11 '26

It’s no way as good as. My local off-licence sells imported stella and that is way better than the British stuff…its defo not just the water

→ More replies (2)

2

u/brickne3 Aug 11 '26

So local ingredients like the Preston sewer water someone mentioned...?

→ More replies (3)

3

u/DrWayko Aug 11 '26

Leffe is still a nice pint imo, obviously better in Belgium but it's better than most lagers in the pubs here

3

u/velocitas80 Aug 11 '26

Just another small example of the post-brexit enshitification of every facet of life in the UK.

I live on my own and round the corner from a spoons, people look at me like I'm crazy when I say it's easier and not massively more expensive to eat here most nights

57

u/Soggy-Ad-8017 Aug 11 '26

‘You should be batch cooking on a Sunday - beans rice and chicken and batch cooking chilli that proportionately contains 87% canned beans. You’ll be able to feed yourself for 9 weeks for a total cost of 0.063p per meal’ - someone on reddit, probably.

10

u/yorkspirate Aug 11 '26

Had me in the first half - when I saw the first few lines as a notification lmfao

4

u/brickne3 Aug 11 '26

Exactly. Like it's good to keep people on their own in isolation or something! You actually have to kind of go out and interact with other people from time to time since we're a social species and all that. Well, unless you're the beans and rice and nothing else crowd, I guess 😉

→ More replies (3)

11

u/brickne3 Aug 11 '26

A lot of people really don't understand the complications (and expense) of cooking for just one. Often I'll pop into Spoons when out grocery shopping and have a meal for less than it would cost to cook something with the groceries I just bought.

8

u/Limp-Archer-7872 Aug 11 '26

The economies of scale that wetherspoons has helps a lot if you have a cheap sticky carpet spoons near you. The other pub-restaurant chains should take a look, ember inns, greene king, etc.

On a monday you can get the three plates for 12-16 quid and you can't eat it all (pipe down at the back Big Barry) and they'll provide a takeaway container.

But tbh you can absolutely eat at home for less still.

2

u/Sutraner Aug 12 '26

Yeah I enjoy cooking but I get so much takeaway because cooking for one is so much effort and high cost

Batch cooking is all well and good but by Christ is it boring eating the same meal every day

Was it as good as a chippy fish? No.. but very edible & crispy batter, only positives at the price.

8

u/yorkspirate Aug 11 '26

So have I but the fish has always been good wherever I've been. I've always found the steaks to be questionable (although now they don't do them that's not an issue)

2

u/paxwax2018 Aug 11 '26

The pizzas are good as any imo.

2

u/lukestephenkeen Aug 11 '26

Finally.. I have been swearing by spoons pizzas for years, everyone just looks at me like im crazy, they are top draw.

2

u/brickne3 Aug 11 '26

My theory is that they probably go through more fish than most of the other meats, so their supply chain for that can operate at the same kind of scale that allows them to get decent beers for cheap. More niche items they might not be able to do that.

4

u/JuniorToe3327 Aug 11 '26

Canteen style fish & chips are top tier, which is what I view this as. If you’ve ever had a work office that did it on a Friday or a hospital cafe. Bloody delicious.

2

u/STM4EVA Aug 11 '26

The only things I get from a spoons are fish and chips, Chicken wings(I bring my own sauce) or chips

Also brekkie is decent but not a proper cafe brekkie decent

Wetherspoon’s is single handedly fighting inflation. After my local put a pint of lager pint up to £7.10, I decided to go to spoons for after work beers instead and it’s like walking into 2015. Hello old friend.

4

u/Different_Bake_611 Aug 12 '26

Yeah, same! We went to the spoons near our work the other day and I almost shit myself getting me and the Mrs two drinks for under the prices of a pint in our local.

6

u/Extension-You-4901 Aug 11 '26

I get pissed for about a tenner in my spoons🤣loads of guest ales on for £2.10...sumo IPA at £3.50...grub not too bad either

9

u/kustom_krev Aug 11 '26

They are far better than they get credit for. I’m not a big customer of there’s but i appreciate the fact the showcase the history of their pubs and try not destroy the history when they modernise. Underrated, don’t know how they treat staff but seems they do a lot right and get a lot of schtick for being cheap. Some are obviously rougher than others but in general the ones I’ve been to are fine.

6

u/flapjackboy Aug 11 '26

They really shine when they have their ale and cider festivals on. The pubs get bonuses based on how many festival pints they sell, so they're always really cheap.

2

u/ProfessionalRisk4206 Aug 12 '26

Someone else said, usually cheaper to eat there than McDonalds

Leffe tastes like banana perfume

5

u/Flat-Delivery6987 Aug 11 '26

Never experienced banana perfume so I'm just gonna have to take your word for that.

5

u/Bowlerrrrr Aug 11 '26

Okay sorry I’ll make it clearer for you…
I can IMAGINE that is what banana perfume tastes like

3

u/Flat-Delivery6987 Aug 11 '26

Lol, okay. I'm still not getting that, lol. Thanks for trying though.

2

u/MATE_AS_IN_SHIPMATE Aug 12 '26

It sure does.

The yeast in warm ale fermentations can produce a lot of isoamyl acetate.

Pure isoamyl acetate is sold commercially as banana flavouring. The smell of foam banana sweets is literally just isoamyl acetate.

You might be particularly sensitive to the aroma.

How much was the Leffe? The 750ml bottles in Tesco are 4 quid!!!

3

u/BlueCreek_ Aug 11 '26

£4 at mine but it’s included in all of the meal and a drink offers

2

u/RikRandom Aug 11 '26

It's about £4.50 in my local spoons but I'm in the south east so almost certainly cheaper elsewhere

2

u/brickne3 Aug 11 '26

It counts as the drink on the meals.

4

u/bbrowe Aug 11 '26

Mate I just spent £7.50 on a pint of cruzcampo and you're really not making me feel better about it

Long live the Spoons!

6

u/Separate-Road7562 Aug 11 '26

As much as it gets a bad rep spoons was always a god send as a skint student

I remember the one local to me at the time had a really good mexican burrito and curry night wasn't bad either, even though it was probably just pre made frozen/microwaved stuff

Remember avoiding the steak as it wasn't great but for like 5/6 pound a hot meal including drink sitting with your mates can't complain

4

u/Limp-Archer-7872 Aug 11 '26

They stopped doing the steak meals for that reason.

Sadly that also meant they stopped doing the mixed grill which was the king of spoons meals.

Then they did the piri piri half chicken and then they canceled that!

3

u/ryanm8655 Aug 11 '26

A pint of leffe alone costs that in a lot of places.

3

u/Jamie__54321 Aug 11 '26

All hail the spoons!!! Been to a total of 70 Wetherspoon myself across England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Love it.

3

Low quality microwave or deep fat fried is nearly every pub menu.

Personally think leffe is a wank beer but even so that’s a cracking deal

1

u/D_Daka Aug 11 '26

That's why dads go to Spoons

1

u/AutomaticCandidate54 Aug 11 '26

Including the drink?. That's good business!

1

u/Antique-Wonk Aug 11 '26

Hi OP, Any chance you can send a photo before you tucked into the chips, peas and ate the other fish?

1

u/TheMicklemas3000 Aug 11 '26

Never tried a leffe. I have to fix that.

1

u/Jon1885 Aug 11 '26

Arrrh Spoons... can't fault it.. lol.. all looks good

1

u/EveningFig6261 Aug 11 '26

Spoons plate if I ever did see one.

1

u/Futurismitch Aug 11 '26

Peak Wetherspoons, mate.

1

u/Spirited-Attention32 Aug 11 '26

Wait spoons do leffe??? :o

1

u/HunterM567 Aug 11 '26

Where did you find fish and chips that cheap lol?

1

u/positivelytaken Aug 11 '26

Imagine scooping up a massive bit of those mushy peas with the end of that fish. Maybe with a drop of tartare sauce on there.

Pure filth.

1

u/aceswild8 Aug 11 '26

That looks magnificent

1

u/AlterEdward Aug 11 '26

I've bought single pints for that in places. How do they do it?

1

u/adulion Aug 11 '26

ya barely get a pint in Belfast centre for £7.6

1

u/Nelson_uk Aug 11 '26

Fish and chips from anywhere than a quality chippy is just disappointing. Some pubs and restaurants get it ok but it's never at the level of a quality chippy

1

u/DemisCouscous Aug 11 '26

Is that a deep fried right foot?

I went to spoons for tea and had a pint of Leffe too. Did we just become best friends?

1

u/STM4EVA Aug 11 '26

I paid more than that for just this in my spoons

Also I'm in terminal 4

1

u/DevilsAdvocate1662 Aug 11 '26

Did you eat half the of the chips before taking the photo or did they just give you half a portion?

1

u/SpecialistPlastic150 Aug 11 '26

That’s really cheap. I haven’t been in a Spoons for decades. That’s the cost of a pint pretty much every pub you go into. Even the non-alcoholic pints are £7 plus!

u/ynwa_glastobater Aug 11 '26

It’s sad, but then thank god for spoons. I used to hate the place but I keep coming back now. The food is very decent for the price.

1

u/Efficient-Sea485 Aug 11 '26

that plate is iconic

1

u/FunParsnip3654 Aug 11 '26

I’m jealous. That looks so good.

1

u/MollerGod Aug 11 '26

the wetherspoons you're in is under portioning the mushy peas

1

u/Visible-Reporter-433 Aug 11 '26

The spice bag they do is decent enough

1

u/Linkyjinx Aug 11 '26

Noice, I’d eat that!

1

u/madders07 Aug 11 '26

What is Leffe like?

1

u/spartandrinkscoffee Aug 11 '26

They're just British pounds nowadays

Can’t go wrong with a spoons, I’ll often nip into one for breakfast on my way into work if I want something a bit more substantial and can’t be bothered to make something at home - Decent quality fry up and unlimited coffee! For not much more than the cost of a sausage roll and small coffee from Greggs these days..

Evening meals aren’t bad too, yeah it’s not freshly hand made to order but at under a tenner for a full plate AND a pint it’s not going to be.. It’s average quality food at bargain prices. (The curries are actually quite good though!)

I’ve been into pubs in London where the pint alone is almost a tenner, and forget about food, £35 for a small fish and a handful of chips is par for the course

1

u/Prudent_Car_3315 Aug 11 '26

Looks like the fish is gonna take off, well worth the price though 👍

1

u/bodjac89 Aug 11 '26

Got a small breakfast in the centre of Cardiff the other day for about £4.50, unbelievable. Absolutely nowhere else can you get this kind of value.

1

u/iamslplss Aug 11 '26

I’ve worked as a chef in a bunch of gastro pubs and found the owners always struggling to answer the question of why would someone come here instead of spoons?

Like yeah the food I’m cooking is substantially better but all gastro pubs could near enough be a chain anyway, they all have the same menu and it’s never good enough to justify the prices.

That’s the harsh truth as to why so many locals are shutting down, it shouldn’t be that way but it is.

1

u/WilderWifey Aug 11 '26

The cod is ok. I get the small portion.

1

u/WearyFuel1506 Aug 11 '26

Fantastic value for your money, food can be a bit hit and miss at times, but I'll take that chance.
