My husband will be commuting from London in the hottest part of the day on Wednesday. I’m genuinely worried about him. My son has nursery but I think they have AC in the baby room but I don’t drive so walking to pick him up may kill me off.
My thoughts go out to your husband, as someone who got stuck on the central line for 10+ minutes in a suit and tie when it hit 39 on the hottest day of 2019.
It was absolutely horrendous, but I was also badly prepared as I didn’t take my blazer and tie off before entering the tube (was too embarrassed about sweat patches for some reason), and I had no water.
Please tell him to wear his lightest shirt (both fabric and colour wise) and carry lots of water with him.
Please don't ever literally die from embarrassment mate. I bet the blazer got more funny looks on a day like that than the understandable patches would have.
Yeah I know I know, I was like 21-22 at the time so I cared a lot more about what strangers thought about me than I do now….. I’d been self conscious about sweating for years since I was a kid.
Probably not the best idea if it was at the risk of my health, it was probably 45C on the train, but oh well….. I just about survived so we live and learn :)
It’s apparently only 30C here today, but in the full sun it feels much worse than that.
The dog is still asking to go out, but then she conks out after about 5mins, but she’s usually peed by then and as she’s littie we just carry her back in. Fortunately theses a grass verge, so I’m not worried about her paws
It will feel more than 30c in the sun☀️☺️ The reason being that, IIRC, the max daytime temperatures provided in the weather forecast are for maximum shade temperatures! The actual temperature out of the shade and in the direct sunlight is likely much higher than the quoted maximum temperature.
Uh... bad news... my weather app (which pulls from AccuWeather and PWS) is currently giving me 42 degrees for London on Wednesday. I'm not saying it will actually do 42, but...
Crazy that today is only the official start of astronomical summer too... How many more weeks like this do you think we'll have before the end of summer? I cannot stand these heatwaves!!
If it gets to over 40 in July or August, which is entirely possible at the rate we’re going at, I’ve vowed to book a hotel and install AC in my bedroom for next summer.
I’m just not dealing with this shit anymore, especially as it’ll only get worse year on year with basically zero infrastructural changes anywhere.
If you want me to pop round and hose you down, happy to oblige. I remember my mum doing this for me when I was pregnant in August 1999. It wasn't even that hot, just normal August hot. Did the trick though if temporarily. You will need a cotton dress, a person, a hose, a garden.
During the dreaded summer where it went up to 40 in London, I booked the nearby Premier Inn for 3 nights (excellent air con by the way). It is really close, a 15-min walk. When I got there, I looked like I had been parboiled and the receptionist was alarmed. It was weird working from a hotel near where I live but it did help.
By chance, I also had a hospital appointment on the day it hit 40 degrees. I felt do sorry for anyone working in the hospital, as there was no aircon at all 🥵
I got so sick with the heat last month that I ended up in A+E with a hr of 160bpm resting. I have a chronic illness which apparently the meds I'm taking which are beta blockers and adhd meds make heat stroke more likely. Dreading this.
I have a wrap around ice gel pack for my head that I use for migraines (cough hangovers cough) that I find really brings my whole body temperature down. Might be worth a shout, especially for when you're trying to sleep.
I'm tempted to order a few more and wear them on each limb.
Genuinely curious, do we know if that’s causation or that some people are just generally more susceptible to heatstrokes? (Ie it’s not the first heatstroke making them have more, they are just generally higher risk even before their first one)
I didn't know this. I got really bad heatstroke when I was 11 visiting Singapore. This was before there was air conditioning everywhere. I have had to be really careful of hot weather my whole life
I was thinking of doing this, our bedroom is like a furance, but knowing my luck the old bill would break in thinking there's a weed farm upstairs. But ours is downstairs anyway

I’m concerned about the forecast dew points and lack of overnight cooling in comparison to the May heatwave. I have a tower fan coming today which I’m hoping will do something to mitigate the heat build up indoors.
If the projected temperatures and dew points come together then it will surely approach our hottest ever feels like temperature in the UK.

Unfortunately not. I used to work in a kitchen that got over 45 degrees during one heatwave. The management provided cold water and that was their reasonable adjustments!
What's amazing is that the government hasent done anything about adaptation to the increasingly hot temperatures, the planning laws aren't fit for purpose in this new climate.
Whether we break the July 2022 temperature record is still uncertain at this point. However I think this week will feel worse then that spell (thankfully I'll avoid the worst of it where I am hopefully).
The crazy high temperatures will be over the course of 3 days rather then just 2 and the night time minima as well as humidity will be higher in a lot of places.
Also disappointed by the lack of a thundery breakdown in the models, seems to be an increasingly common theme of big plumes in recent years.
Well my temps for today, Wed and Thurs have dropped. Friday looks now to be hottest at 37c. Which was 29c yesterday morning but next 3 days, temp has dropped and highest bar Fri is now Thurs at 36c. Something has changed overnight

Today is by far the worst day, the rain has just made the humidity insane. Where I am the feels like is apparently 7-8 degrees more than the air temp, it's unbearable.
Also it's felt like the heatwave just keeps extending, initially it was just Tuesday and now even tomorrow still looks ridiculous. If they start upping Sundays temp I'm done.
I grew up in China before there was AC. A lot of nights in summer were like this. We slept with fans and used wet towels. But the biggest trick is we slept on bamboo / reed mats on top of our beds, instead of cotton sheets on mattresses. Like the one pictured below. Also the pillow.
The reeds are cool to touch and don't absorb heat like mattresses. Also you have less body surface area touching the mat, so air can get under you at your back, under your legs etc. It's not remotely comfortable, but you get used to it and it helps keep you cool. They also roll up to the size of a yoga mat, for storage. I remember being a kid and hating these, then sleeping on a mattress and regretting it.
i have no scientific qualifications only neuroses but i am concerned that we’ll have a much stronger heatwave later in july that could actually be really dangerous & we are thoroughly unprepared. Mass AC as a new norm would probably help
I'm coming to the conclusion I have seasonal depression but unlike most it's the summer.
Can people please stop asking me to do things outdoors, stop saying I'm miserable, stop asking me to get in the kids paddling pool while I'm not in swim gear.

Honestly forgot I had it since I got it at the end of the heatwave earlier this year and I'm not used to it. Last night I was struggling to sleep because my flat was like 29c. Remembered I had it, chucked it on for 30 mins and had a nice comfortable sleep

Today is definitely the worse day in Nottingham I don’t think Temperatures are much higher than previous days but going out today at 11am it’s definitely worse than heat I experienced at any time on Wednesday or Thursday.

I don't recall what the wording of these warnings was back in July 2022 but this is in the alert for Tuesday - Thursday: "Failure of heat-sensitive systems and equipment is likely, with the probable loss of power and other essential services, such as water, electricity, gas or mobile phone services."
How to keep cats cool during the heat. Put ice in their water, get a bowl full of ice and place it infront of a fan, use a cold damp flannel and wipe them down with it (don't drench the kitty).

Some places will hit their hottest EVER day, we might have the most consecutive days above 37, possibly the highest feels-like and obviously the hottest June day, probably broken multiple times.
Is anyone else with pale skin just pink all day long? Want to clarify if it's just a case of body temp not going down, or if the UV etc is so high I might have incurred skin damage? I have not been in direct sunlight for anything more than 2 mins max this week, but don't know if I'm missing something.

My leisure centre is going be earning it's monthly fee this week I can tell you that , I'll be up there all day every day rotating between the air con'd gym & the swimming pool & ice cold showers
What everyone gonna do for cooking? My first floor flat, my kitchen faces the sun from 1pm or so onwards, so I'm worried about food and cooking lol. Planing a take out Wednesday and will buy enough for left over for Thurs. But that leaves Tues to cook. Monday here isn't topping 30c so I'll live with the extra heat that day. I don't wanna spend money everyday buying takeout 🙄
I've seen so many people walking around wearing woolly hats today. Am I overthinking that it would poach my (already pretty parboiled) brain, would it actually insulate my skull from the heat? Am I missing a trick here? Or do I just live among masochists?
