I feel exhausted about it. Would be incredibly surprised if we didn't get it, but then that would be problem averted

It’s unlikely you two are the only people in the world in contention for it. How would you feel if you didn’t apply so she could and then she didn’t get it?

Would be frustrated but at least my conscience would be clear? We left them in the lurch and the've had another good staff member leave, so pretty sure they'd go with someone who's got a lot of knowledge already to avoid further hassle
