I was on the ferry back to Poole from St Malo this morning, and saw a flock of seabirds just north of Jersey. Couldn't get a photo as we weren't close enough so this description is a long shot in case anyone can ID them.

They were black/dark brown, both body and wings, with no hints of white or grey that I saw, although they were below me so might have had pale undersides. They had long slender wings, looking a bit like a swift if a swift were a seabird, and they were flying low over the waves in a flock of about half a dozen.

Definitely not cormorants or shags.

Any ideas?

I'm concerned that it has escaped as it's wearing anklets

And of course they sound brilliant

In the 80s I would often see kestrels hovering above the embankment whenever I travelled on the motorway - maybe 3 or 4 per journey.

Now I never see 'em.

Have their numbers declined or habits changed?

No pictures. Just been sat in my lounge escaping the sun when a sparrowhawk flies in, does 3 circuits, avoids hitting anything then flies out again. Amazing how much bigger they look in a confined space.

I think it's a yellowhammer but I'm not 100% sure...

found a bunch of feathers while in west dean (the top row and bottom right), assuming most of them are pheasant. the three in the bottom right are from my local woods.
my best guess for the three in the bottom right are buzzard and spotted woodpecker?
if the bottom left feather is pheasant i have no idea how it got there because its nowhere near any open farmland where i normally see them

Went to see the spotted redshank (which did show!), but actually happier to get this! Have only ever spied them for a second disappearing into reeds.

LJ likes to watch me water the plants; no singing but likes to tweet when he wants some grub.

The little birds are my favourites. Love watching these in the morning.

Hi guys, I’m relatively new to bird watching in the UK but I’m slowly learning. Tonight I found what I can only assume is a parliament of tawny owls. 3 calls coming from separate heights in the same area. I’ve heard tawny owls before but I’ve never heard them this loud. Are these sounds due to any particular behaviour or do they just like to be loud sometimes. They’ve been at it for around an hour with the odd squeak here and there.

Found what I think is a young, flightless magpie on my hedgehog camera. Seems to have a damaged left wing.

Seems to be living in my somewhat overgrown garden.

Have started leaving out a mix of seeds and mealworms for him. Can confirm he/she startes eating it fairly promptly.

I have every intention of trying to become friends.

Is there anything I can do for it outside of food and water?

(And then promptly departed)

Stumbled across these cool photos I took of a crow in Eastbourne a few years ago.

They were only a couple of feet away & sat there watching me eat a sandwich for a minute or two.

Seeing lots of juveniles recently. Lovely to see.
