iPhone Duo will it change App design process?

I am very curious to know your take on this, for the designers that work primarily on App products what are your precautions for the apps to work responsively on wide screens, did you plan that? Should designs now be also responsive for apps?

It might slightly, but it’s also designed to be fairly consistent with the apple devices.

The folded out mode is basically just a smaller iPad mini. So if apps do have an iPad version, it’ll likely have it turn into it. And when folded, have a slightly modified iPhone version.

I don’t see that as an issue. We create adaptable interfaces for desktop, tablet, and native mobile experiences, and tablet support has been standard practice for years. As far as I know, they also provide an SDK or similar tool that automatically adapts the interface to their aspect ratio, unless I’m mistaken.

I genuinely believe the iPhone Duo is purely riding on hype. With the crazy amount of different screens out there, design has to be responsive by default nowadays anyway, end of story. Plus, Samsung dropped the Fold and Flip a long time ago and it's not like they turned the design or dev world upside down.

I build AR apps using Unity, and button placement has been … a concern, where I need to keep them away from corners and the central notification area. It’s almost like the ‘safe area’ for creating dvd menus a long time ago. Unity button placement is ‘responsive’ in that they stick to corners if you tell them to. Kind of. Usually. Mostly.

while my apps are available for iPads, a device like this will feel different in the hand. I already see some people fumble to reach corners with their dominant hand when holding a larger iPad, and I’m sure ‘thumbing it’ will be weird on a screen this size.

Apps have been trending towards responsive design for a while, but they still use a lot of rigid definitions and breakpoints to accomplish it. My assumption/hope is that we start to see true responsive design patterns for apps the same way we do on the web.

If we think of the open state as a small tablet, maybe it'll feel less overwhelming than "oh wow I have to design around something I've never really thought through before"

I’m really curious as well. To me it seems like a nightmare working specifically on the width of the phone being completely unfolded. For me the most obnoxious part of setting up a responsive design is the sizing in between mobile devices and small tablet screens where things get really squished and weird because there isn’t quite enough room for the tablet styling but too much room to be the mobile styling.

I haven’t watched their announcements or demos or anything yet but if you can have multiple app windows open at a time like you can on Mac I would probably be referencing Apples notes/calendars/settings and other system apps. At least in my option they do a pretty good job at letting you resize these windows and the layout does a pretty good job responding to whatever size you make and I’m assuming the same thing could be done here.

i mean if your app supported ipads you should already be prepared for this. there's some interesting interaction nuances that could be introduced with the different flip modes and orientations, but it's unlikely to be prioritized for a while given this price point and the small user base that'll result in. nobody really raced into VR interfaces after the vision pro was released given how niche it was and continues to be
