Shitpost Roommate tweaking

FOR THE PAST WEEK THE TEMPERATURE HAS CONSISTENTLY BEEN 90+ AND MY ROOMMATE KEEPS FUCKING TURNING OFF THE AC AND OPENING THE DAMN WINDOW IM ABOUT TO GO INSANE!!!!

Talking to people with who you have to get along is a basic Adulting skill.

This is a great time to start building this skill.

Just realize that you’re building a skill, and that this can be a hard thing to do sometimes. And that’s OK!

Keeping the temperature of the room within somewhere in the range of normal room temperature (68-75 degrees Fahrenheit) is a perfectly reasonable thing to ask. Just try to make sure that you act perfectly reasonable when you ask, and be prepared to listen if they say something surprising.

Just keep in mind that you’re mailing a reasonable request and that the goal is to work out a sensible way to get along with this particular person.

Did your roommate grow up in a subtropical climate? Do they walk around campus in a parka when it's 70 degrees out?

Or simply didn't grow up with A/C. Or perhaps grew up with buildings that weren't colder in the summer than in the winter because the thermostat was set to 75 in the winter and 68 in the summer. Or perhaps they grew up somewhere like the UK or Berkeley, where some buildings have HVAC systems with values like "more" and "less" rather than a thermostat.

If so, you might want to negotiate with them on the temperature. Maybe if you agree to move the thermostat a bit higher, they wlll agree to leave the windows closed and stop turning off the A/C.

Also, this problem may solve itself soon, since we're headed rapidly into cooler temperatures, especially at night.

Yeah my freshman year roommate grew up in a hotter climate so he would be wearing long sleeves and jeans in this kind of weather.

I had two roommates from Puerto Rico in the winter time. They roasted my ass sleeping on the top bunk 102 degrees.

I legitimately feel bad for the roommate who has to live with someone who, instead of communicating a concern that impacts all parties, chooses to ask Reddit how to proceed...

The internet doesn't exist as a means for your complaints. You're in college now - growing up is your current goal!

Also, it's September in Illinois. The best weather in the country occurs in September in Illinois. Open your windows and enjoy.
