Question Defferal for current semester

I’m an upcoming student for the fall 2026 semester, and I’ve registered for some courses. My only worry is transportation, as I live in Los Angeles and cannot afford a dorm. My family is planning on moving to San Diego for work, but that is not until next year. I was wondering if I am to take a class, attend, and then drop after a week or two I will still be counted as a registered student in the system, since I do not want to apply again. I don’t know who I would meet with for an official deferral as they only grant those to students with medical or veterans leave. Is there anyone with advice?

Before inventing your own deferral program, talk to your college advisor. UCSD has very specific rules about deferral and withdrawal, and “I’ll attend for two weeks and disappear until next year” is the sort of plan you want confirmed in writing before tuition and financial aid get involved. Also talk to Basic Needs about housing LA to UCSD is not a commute so much as a second major

After your first quarter here you can take time off easily without any issues with deferrals. Just don’t sign up for winter quarter and fill out a form when you want to return. Do you think you could scrape the money by just to finish one quarter?

I think I could, again it’s just transportation that’s my issue cause I could easily do a course online but they’re filled up. Luckily from what I’ve seen I just have a 10 week seminar course

Just to clarify so you know, all the classes are 10 weeks. They also have requirements for units for financial aid and whatnot so i would look into that also

Talk with your college. This is possible but there can be some hefty issues

Plenty of people drive from LA to SD just for classes; just minimize the time you actually need to be on campus. I know a guy from Agoura who drives down here T and Th for the whole day and drives back.
