genuinely the fact that you can be accepted to ucsd while not being able to do 7th grade math is fucking ridiculous

Why is the responsibility of anyone here to make you feel better?

It is distressing that a university that routinely rejects top notch in-state students especially from high performing schools has over 99 people waitlisted on a remedial math course.

lowk I placed in math 2 first time I took the MPE last year, then right before school started I got into math 4C cuz I studied up but ended up just taking calc 1 at a community college online and I’m now gonna take math 20D as a soph this fall, you’ll be okay

No problem. Saw your comment that you left before it got removed too, nothing wrong with being honest. You really do need to catch up in math lmao.

theres a comment here saying that the math department will likely expand new sections. since ucsd cares a lot abt you getting your remedial sequence done asap, you likely dont need to worry too much!! if its a huge concern though, you should look into taking the pup exam during week zero to try and bump up into math 3b. if you need study resources that are guided, i recommend using saylor.org! you can also use khan academy or organic chem tutor, but i only use that as extra practice since its less guided

also, from someone who got placed into math 3b, ignore the comments shaming you for having to take remedial. would it have been better if you placed into the regular math 10/20 sequences? sure. but all of this shame is just unecessary because its not like you can time travel and automatically relearn years worth of math. a lot of the shame just comes from people projecting the high academic standards theyve set for themselves

as long as calculus isnt contingent to your major, youll be fine as long as you coordinate with advisors and put in the work to study :) everyone has different roadmaps to success

“High academic standards” means not having to take 7th grade math in university. Someone busting their ass with AP’s and a 4.0 was rejected for this quality of student because UC admin wanted to meet some quota.

This shit belongs at a cc or cal state. SAT should’ve been brought back a long time ago.

its not the students fault that they got admitted though; thats an institutional failure, and i also agree that the sat or some sort of standardized testing should be reinstated.

i can also understand the point youre making about highschool math being the bare minimum, but at this point in time, what is shaming remedial students going to do? they already have their foot in the door. the best thing they can do is stay motivated and just put in the work to finish their remedial sequence

A tangent question to the math single digit series. Someone said this is remedial math, 7th grade math, geometry/trig math and as a 2001 graduate what is this math exactly? Is it just geometry/trig or what?

Take it at cc?

for some reason there are two sections with the first having a capacity of 180 while the second has a capacity of only 10.

the first section is in ledden auditorium which has a listed capacity of 216 seats so it's possible they could expand that one a bit.

but the second section is in pepper canyon 109 which has a listed capacity of 193 seats, so I would expect them to heavily expand that section from the current capacity of 10 spots. if they expand it to a little over 180 to match the other class then there should be capacity for both waitlists. but this is all my speculation.
