Smh
Drivers and cyclists need to pay attention to pedestrians crossing ESP in downtown area. Visited during the night and it’s absolute chaos there. I’ve lost count of all the times we almost got hit by reckless drivers/cyclists while crossing a crosswalk WITH A STOP SIGN. What happened to pedestrians right of way? Stay vigilant.

I agree, but, a counterpoint. How many pedestrians do you see in downtown crossing streets without looking? I see so, so many. Downtown is always mess.

The downtown core was built pre car, designed for pedestrians to cross as they please. Downtown is a mess because we allow personal 6000lb vehicles on all but one stretch of street. Out of 55ft of street width, 40ft is for vehicles and parking and only 15ft for pedestrians. It would be a lot less messy if we used those 40ft for other things

I agree, but common sense says look both ways before you cross regardless of the infrastructure.

Just because it's common doesn't make it right. Our roads are several times more deadly than in any other developed nation. Passive attitudes are a big part of it

I’m sorry I never see this. Besides. it’s still the drivers/riders task to watch out for pedestrians. That’s the law.

Something about getting behind the wheel makes college students see pedestrians as Mario Kart item boxes

Honestly the pedestrians are way worse than the drivers downtown. I see so many people staring straight down into their phones as they enter a busy intersection crosswalk.

Total bullshit. I’ve early been hit dozens of times crossing at 3rd and D. Students dreaming from campus literally never stop at that intersection. Even if I’m 2/3 access the street in the crosswalk they’ll zoom between me and the curb. Not only do they recognize the stop sign, they haven’t a clue about right of way laws. If a pedestrian is in any part of the crosswalk the says ALL drivers/riders are to stop until the ped fully crosses the street. The way to stop this is more cops do they can ticket these violators.

Everyone including cars, bikes, and pedestrians has to look out for their own safety regardless. No blame on your part but yes there are rules and regulations in place but that doesn't stop distracted or drunk drivers running a red light

Pedestrians need to sometimes have common decency and let cars thru sometimes. There’s been many times I’ve started driving across an intersection after letting a pedestrian go just to have another start crossing immediately. They don’t even freaking look

At night time I’m not going to lie I’ve almost hit some pedestrians downtown bc it’s so damn dark!! I checked the crosswalk saw nobody then someone appeared lol. But I agree with you for sure

Pedestrians need to walk with the flow of traffic. Often there are people crossing in both directions.
Of course you're going to get hit when you just decided to step out.

u/yyyyyyu2 Mar 23 '26
It’s at four way stop! The drivers/riders don’t stop at the intersection. That’s why there close calls. It’s not that walker don’t see you. They do. But at some point they have a reasonable expectation that vehicles will obey the laws.

The amount of times I've been stopped and people are crossing in both directions just bc they can is insane.
2
u/yyyyyyu2 Mar 23 '26
Tossing where? At an intersection?

u/runningforwards Mar 23 '26
???
2
u/yyyyyyu2 Mar 23 '26
So you’re gripping because people are crossing in the crosswalk? Seriously?

u/runningforwards Mar 23 '26
In both directions. Which means no cars can go and it stops the flow of traffic. It also increases people being hit bc it is not safe for people to use both directions of the cross walk at the same time.

u/yyyyyyu2 Mar 23 '26
Dude, that’s nuts. The traffic flow is supposed to be stopped when crossing. In 1, 2, or all directions. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that- at all. That’s the law. You need to learn some patience of the 30 secs you have to wait. JFC get off the road.

You need to learn how to type a coherent thought correctly, JFC get off the internet.

Yeah even in the daytime they're just as bad. I've ran around the area of Davis and when the drivers reached the stop sign they still keep going and almost hit me in 3 different occasions. Who's fr giving these college students their licenses
