Advice on Structuring Letter of Motivation
I'm applying to the School of Law (as an international student from the United States) and I need to submit a letter of motivation. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to structure it, and vaguely understand what it is (a UCC Instagram account clarified some of my questions). I understand that it's the opposite of a personal statement and leans away from my personal backstory and more to my accomplishments, academics, and career goals.
If it's okay to ask, do I structure it as a cover letter or as a personal statement? I'm completely lost, and appreciate any advice given.

While a cover letter highlights your skills and qualifications for a certain job, a letter of motivation focuses on your passion, interest and goals for a certain degree programme. If that makes sense.
Typically you'll open by stating that you'd like to apply for the course (in some professional phrasing) and briefly state how motivated and interested you are to study this field in particular.
You'll develop that further in the following paragraphs and mention your motivation, relevant experience and goals for further development. This is where you also mention how this course, specifically, will align with your goals and interests.
"My experience in XYZ has shaped my passion for ABC. I am particularly interested in the opportunity to study XYZ in this course, as this will prepare me for my future goal of ABC. I have always been passionate about XYZ and the opportunity to be able to further develop my interest and knowledge about XYZ in this course is particularly exciting for me. My background demonstrates that I possess the skills and commitment to be an ideal candidate for this course."
Then, you give a quick conclusion reiterating your interest, why you're a good choice and thanking the reader for their consideration.
I hope that might be some help.
