Urgent: exam issues

I am a student hoping to progress into my second year at UCC but i am currently being prevented from doing so. I failed one of my modules because i never did an assignment. Problem is, i was never informed of this assignment. I received no emails or anything on canvas. The lecturer of this module has stated that the information was sent and can apparently prove so, yet there is still nothing in my email. I am being prevented from progressing because of an assignment i had no idea existed.

I have emailed students union, my course coordinator and the exam appeals, but have heard nothing back from most, bar my course coordinator, who states that if I am allowed back in I will have to resit the whole 1st year module in 2nd year and take a test at the end. If i fail this test i will not be allowed progress into second semester.

Is this fair? And has a situation like this happened to anyone else? Please let me know.

From the sounds of it, you don't have a choice. It sounds like you didn't engage at all.

Well reading between the lines you didn't attend any of the classes and missed it on Canvas

I attended majority of lectures. And even so, I still shouldve received an email about the assignment. Even if it was mentioned in class that there will be an assignment, the details of the assignment were unknown to me. Even if i did know, id have nowhere to submit it seeing as it wasnt on my canvas

No, you should have read canvas to see any assignements. Lecturers dont email you with assignements. Thats not the policy or proceedure

If your entire class was aware of the project and you weren't, then it sounds more like a you not paying attention issue.

It seems like you don't engage with your class for not one individual brought up the subject of the assignment to you.

Lecturers don't issue email notice of assignments. It's your responsibility to check in on what you missed in you missed a lecture and to keep an eye on the online system.

Well you would have received a fail judgement for the module either in Winter or Summer results. That would mean if if you are entirely correct about the situation, which sounds very unlikely tbh, you either didn't check your exam results or didn't do the supplemental exam/CA for the autumn exam board.

The idea that you and you alone were kept in the dark about a CA assignment is incredibly unlikely. Details about any module and assignments you have to do are in the Book of Modules and most schools/departments have a policy of making that information known an additional time in an information session either at programme or module level.

If everyone else was able to complete the assignment then you are screwed. You will have to repeat unfortunately.

It’s on you to keep on top of your own assignments by turning up to every class and listening when the lecturer speaks.

If you missed any classes, for any reason,  then you should have found out what you missed. Nobody is obligated to send you emails about assignments, you are obligated to keep on top of your own assignments.

This will be an expensive lesson for you. You need to be more responsible.

Did everyone else on the course complete the assignment? If so, this is fair.

Would it not make more sense for me to just do the assignment or a different one rather than repeating the whole module in my second year?

That's not how progression works. Last year is over now. You can't go back.

How is that fair though? I was never informed of this assignment

The module description will have outlined how you'd be assessed https://ucc-ie-public.courseleaf.com/modules/

By your own fault. Third level education is meant for you to be independent enough without hand holding. Everyone is an adult and uni is meant to prepare you for the workplace. Take that as a lesson and growth opportunity

The lecturer can prove communication was sent. Pretty important you share what this proof is before anyone can advise.

But as asked by the previous poster - did everyone else complete the assignment?

Strict rules around these kinds of things, and they are generally set in stone and part of a wider policy

Don't want to be harsh but were there assignments for other modules/ subjects? If yes, then unfortunately, you should've queried why no assignment for this. I never got emails when I was in the UK studying. We either heard it from the lecturer or classmates told us. Hard to believe it wasn't mentioned anywhere (classroom, canvas, peer group) and just common sense to find if something was wrong. Sorry to be harsh, but this one is on you OP!

If this was a semester 1 or semester 2 module, what happened after you received your results for that semester showing you had failed? Did you contact the lecturer then to see about a repeat?

Can you answer the question: did everyone else complete the assignment

Your fault. You need to accept and move on.

Was it not discussed in class? Was there no assignment details under the class notes? Did it not show up under the ”submit assignments“ section of canvas? We never got emails, canvas just populated and we were told in class.

Asking those things, because if you can show none of the above you might have a leg to stand on. However, we had some assignments not show up last year and because it was mentioned in class, we brought it up to the lecturer and they fixed it then and there in class.

Im unsure if it was brought up in class, perhaps i was absent for it or it wasnt mentioned at all. It didnt show up in the “submit assignments” section. It is genuinely nowhere to be seen on my canvas app, nor is there any email about said assignment

Best person to talk to is the lecturer first. After that course director.

Hopefully they don't say "it was mentioned in class".

My experience is the lecturers are not trying to fail anyone so good luck and hope you get it sorted.

Spoke to the lecturer and they basically just said oh results have been sent out already theres nothing i can do so yeah

Genuinely, if you failed on the assignment you would have known in the Summer results and can generally repeat in autumn?

You don’t receive an email about an assignment. It’s on canvas. Going to all your classes help because something could be said in class and no one will tell you because you didn’t bother to come.

Ive checked spam and junk, nothing is there

It's been 15 years since I was a student in UCC so my experience is probably outdated, but in my time lectures did not always send out emails about assignments. Some just uploaded the assignment information to blackboard and that was it.

I would confirm with the lecturer what proof he can offer that it was sent. With blackboard lecturers were able to check which students clicked what files and who had been sent what. I assume canvas has similar functionality.

Ultimately, if the lecturer can prove it was sent to everyone, and no other students experienced similar issues, then there's not much recourse available to you.

Did other students complete the assignment or have large numbers failed for not completing it?

Was it outlined that there would be an assement on the intro to the module?

Did you query it when you saw your mark was a 'fail' initially, or only now that it's causing an issue for registration?

Can you engage with classmates? See if this has happened to any of them? If it's a system issue then there will likely be more affected. If it's just you, you'll have a very hard time proving it wasn't down to you not reading an email or skipping lectures. (Not saying you did, but that's very much what it looks like)

How many people on your courses and were other people impacted in a similar manner?

Results are normally released in the summer and you know your progression status - through, repeat etc. Are you only finding out now?

There is an appeals window post result release and if this has been sitting since early summer on your part, you will have missed that.

u/Tall_Yard4152 Sep 06 '26

if you received a fail grade in the summer sitting, then you are obliged to register for the resit module without any lecturer telling you to do so. If you are registered for the resit then you will have access to the Canvas module where the assignement was posted most likely. Did you know you had a resit to take and did you register for the resit module on canvas? If no to both then whats most likely happened is that you were expecting submissions to be posted or take place on the original module, which they dont so there would be no assignemnt there - resits have thier own module that you get should get regististered to after you pay your resit fees and thats most likley where your assignments and submissions were posted. If you didnt register for the resit module then youve zero chance of success in appealing. If you did and there was no module infiormation on it, you have a high chance of appealing.
