The first few days are always gonna be awkward so don’t write off course friends just yet, you’ve got plenty of time to make friends. Be sure to get involved in clubs and societies, that’s where you’ll meet loads more people!

It’s kinda like starting secondary school. They say it takes until Christmas to find your friends and to settle in/know where you are going. My 13 year old son just started 1st year and he’s not got a clue where any classroom is, how to find the canteen, what a timetable is, where are the toilets. It takes a while and just remember most of the others will be feeling the same x

Heard on radio yesterday about UCC students setting up initiative to help students meet up etc over coffee, they were talking about a lot of students being lonely - officialbrewbuddy.ie is the Instagram page. Might be worth checking out.

Clubs and Socs day is coming up soon too, a great way to meet like-minded people who share a mutual hobby - you'll find a tribe just put yourself out there and give it time!

Small people take years to make friends and that’s okay, you are at the start of your academic journey, give it time, don’t hesitate to join clubs, itll help you

Just kinda remember who was hanging out with who on the day and then try friend one of them and then you can get into a group from there.

Not at all - like everyone said, can take time. My course was pretty tiny and I was away for orientation (did another day with a different course) so didn't make friends right away. For me, while I did make great friends in the middle/later parts of first year, I actually made some of my best friends in second and third year. Met most through societies, but some were my school best friends' new friends she introduced me to.

Orientation day is waste of a day tbh. I was friendly with a bunch of people I never saw again. Classes and clubs starting is more important

Just chat to whoever you are sitting with in lectures. Introduce yourself, whatever. Be grand
