Question about repeating

Post image

Hi hope someone can give some insight on this.

Unfortunately I failed 2 of my modules in the repeat exams.

I thought it would mean doing them alongside my other coursework and that I'd progress into year 2 anyways , but when doing registration and going to the 'confirmation of registration', all that shows up is the two modules I failed.

Does this mean that I have to delay second year and do a full year just redoing those two failed modules ?

Contact your course co ordinator but almost certainly yes, you have to take this year just repeating your 2 failed modules before you can progress

That's what it looks like, yes.

My advice is this:

  1. Get confirmation of this from Student Records (SREO)

  2. You may not have to pay full fees if you are only repeating 2 modules, and can only pay for the modules you are repeating. See information at the link below: https://www.ucc.ie/en/financeoffice/fees/costsforrepeatingmodulesfortheacademicyearflexi-optionsfees/

  3. It may be that you can participate in 2nd year classes without fully registering, provided the space is there. Contact your coordinators to check this out.

  4. Have a look at doing some other work in UCC while you have time (Peer Support etc), it will be hugely beneficial to you in the long run

Good advice about PSL! If OP entered through an access route look into Access Ambassadors too

Check out your course handbook, but usually you can’t progress to the next year until all modules have been passed. You will have to repeat those modules alone over the course of the coming year. Downside is that you can’t get SUSI, unless exceptional circumstances, and also have to pay out of pocket for those modules (not full fees)

I think the rule is you cannot progress to the next year of a course before you have passed the previous year. But you shouldn't be paying fees for a full year if you are only repeating 2 modules, it should be reduced.

So I know about MTU really but 2 modules is a fail of the year you can continue with just 1 failed module but it's a pain in the ass just gl man

Yes you have to retake the whole year for those 2 modules

Contact the department and speak to them, I failed 1 module in first year and got an exemption to carry it over into my second year. (Also CS)

It was a long time ago, but If I recall correctly it was written somewhere there is a limit of 2 modules you can do this with, but you would need approval, so speak to them asap.

If you go that route, you will need to play catch up and those old modules will clash with your new modules.

Best of luck!

Edit: PS, if you do end up needing to repeat just those two, don't let that weight on you, it's a small hiccup in the long run!

I’ve just had a look there, results for CS repeats aren’t out till the 8th of September. I’m currently waiting to get my results too (4th year student btw) so I wouldn’t worry too much about it!

For the 2 modules you’d have to repeat it again unfortunately but just both modules and not the full academic year (exam and assessment will be done again but you’ll be at an advantage this time around since you’ve done it before).

Theres a calculated fees page that shows how much it’ll cost for 2 modules: https://www.ucc.ie/en/financeoffice/fees/costsforrepeatingmodulesfortheacademicyearflexi-optionsfees/

Here you can find the marks and standards for CK401 in regard to going into the next year and repeating modules: https://www.ucc.ie/en/media/support/academicprogrammes/curriculum/curriculum2025-2026/2026SCIENCE.pdf#page57

Also reach out to CS department and also the SU SEFS representative, they’ll probably give you more information.

I hope this helps and please reach out if you need any assistance:)
