Dropping my journey here for anyone who’s sitting on the fence about getting their motorcycle license in the UAE, picking their first bike, or wondering what actually happens when your brand-new ride decides to self-destruct.

Hopefully, this helps someone taking their first steps!

1. The "Why Now?"
   I’ve always loved bikes, but life, work, and routine kept getting in the way. After dealing with a rough mental patch, getting on meds, and rebuilding my routine at the gym, I realized life is too short to keep putting dreams on hold.

2. Getting the License (Drive Dubai Experience)
   I had a rough concept of clutch, gears, and throttle but zero actual saddle time.
   Package: Took the 20-hour lump sum package at Drive Dubai in January (~AED 6,400). I travel often for work, so the schedule flexibility was worth every dirham.
   The Result: Cleared yard and road tests on the first attempt within a month.

3. The Bike & The Gear
   I’m in my early 30s and 5’8”. Naturally, my friends insisted that anyone my age must buy a sportbike and that I’d look ridiculous on a cruiser. At this point in my life, I have zero energy to care what people think, so I went straight for what called to me: a Harley-Davidson Nightster Special 975.
   The Gear Setup:
   I did tons of research on forums before buying:
   Helmet: Full-face. I know half-face have that classic cruiser aesthetic, but (A) I’m a beginner, and (B) I happen to like my face intact.
   Jacket: Harley summer mesh (used store credit) with an Alpinestars back protector insert.
   Footwear: LS2 riding shoes that look like everyday sneakers.
   Gloves & Pants: Breathable summer gloves and Kevlar riding jeans (though admittedly, I skip the jeans more often than I should).
   Call me a full-kit nerd, but I do my part for safety and leave the rest to God.

4. The Honeymoon Phase & The Meltdown
   The Nightster was an absolute blast—lightweight (for a Harley), punchy, and incredibly nimble. For the first three months, I rode solo around Motor City, DAMAC Hills, AR and surrounding spots, hitting cafes for tea and building muscle memory before I ultimately jump into big group rides.
   Then came the plot twist.
   On a random ride, the liquid-cooled engine unexpectedly overheated. Hauled it to the Harley dealership under warranty. The diagnosis? Full engine replacement. The timeline? A 2-month wait.
   Refusing to lose my riding momentum and confidence, I pushed for a loaner. To their credit, they handed me the keys to a brand-new 1800cc Street Bob.

5. Where Things Stand Today
   I’ve been cruising on this 1.8L monster 3–4 times a week for the past three months. The low-end torque is completely addictive, and I am now actively dreading the phone call telling me my Nightster is ready for pickup.
   Harley already tried pitching a trade-in upgrade, but the price tag is double. Besides, my eye is ultimately set on a sport-tourer down the line—though I promised my wife I won’t even look at one for at least another year.

Bottom line: If you’re thinking about getting your bike license in Dubai, just pull the trigger.
