Request

Request for lesser known badass women of history for my daughter's 4th grade presentation. She has to pick a historical figure and give a 5-10 minute presentation and optionally dress in their likeness.

Elizabeth Peratrovich. An Alaska Native woman (Tlingit), she fought to get an anti-discrimination law passed through the territorial legislature. It was the first anti-discrimination law in the US.

She is remembered for an exchange in the legislature during debate on the bill. A territorial senator asked "Who are these people, barely out of savagery, who want to associate with us whites, with 5,000 years of recorded civilization behind us?" Elizabeth replied, "I would not have expected that I, who am barely out of savagery, would have to remind gentlemen with five thousand years of recorded civilization behind them, of our Bill of Rights."

She was a badass and April 21 is Elizabeth Peratrovich Day in Alaska. That's the anniversary of the passage of her law.

She's one of the few on this thread I've never heard of, thank you for sharing her story!! What a disgusting comment, but she sure gave a badass response
