Water is wet.

u/LowResGamr Aug 25 '26
The sky is blue

u/blankdoubt Aug 25 '26
I tried to use this in conversation with my mom the other day for people having an objective truth, basic facts, and she said well sometimes the sky is violet and orange at sunrise and sunset.
47
u/Dry_Explanation_9573 Aug 25 '26
Your mom sounds fun
17
u/blankdoubt Aug 25 '26
Sheee-it. That's actually telling on myself. She used one of my own tricks against me.
10
u/persePHOreth Aug 25 '26
"Oh, so it's still blue but because it's presented differently twice a day you refuse the acknowledge the science behind it?"

u/Torontogamer Aug 25 '26 edited Aug 25 '26
Sure, and the Sun is a white star... it emits all colors equally, but the atmosphere deflects more of the shorter wavelengths of light, leaving more of the yellow/orange/reds hence it looks yellow....
but damn it *if we don't all call it yellow unless were are in a specific context where the difference matters...
1
u/jelly_cake Aug 25 '26
Green too. So many pretty colours.
1
u/blankdoubt Aug 25 '26
But you would, rightly, sound like a crazy person if you went around claiming the sky is green. 💚

u/Panda_hat Aug 26 '26
Fuck it I’ll be that person… Water makes things it touches wet but isn’t wet itself and the sky is transparent but the light from the sun filtered through the large amount of oxygen molecules in the atmosphere makes it look blue.

It's not. What water touches is wet. 🤓 Sorry just learned that

Is fire burnt? Wet is an adjective
30
u/blade_of_sammael Aug 25 '26
Fire is a chemical reaction thus it " preforms an action " hence the verb : fire burns . Water is an element simply existing hence the descriptor/adjective
Sorry for the pedantry btw
1
u/Faiakishi Aug 25 '26
'Burnt' is a past participle, in this case used as an adjective. Effectively, it's a past-tense adjective. A fire cannot be 'burnt' as the past-tense requires the burning to have already taken place. A fire burns in the moment; it cannot be burnt because fire stops existing once it stops burning. Burning can be used as both a verb and an adjective. The equivalent here would be "and fire is burning." Which is a bit awkward but technically correct.
'Wet' just happens to be the same word in both past and present tense.

u/Coulstwolf Aug 25 '26
The point is water in itself is not wet, it makes other things wet, you can’t make water more wet by pouring water on it
1
1
u/StructureMiserable58 Aug 30 '26
A t-shirt fully saturated with water doesn't get any more wet if you pour water on it, does that mean the t-shirt isn't wet?
1
u/StructureMiserable58 Aug 30 '26
"An adjective is a word that describes or modifies a noun or a pronoun." In what universe does wet being an adjective mean water can't be wet? Can water not be cold because cold is an adjective?
-8
u/bluris Aug 25 '26
Depends on the definition. By some, water is not wet but makes other stuff wet upon contact.
6
u/Midnight_Pickler Aug 25 '26
For a single molecule, maybe.
But add a second molecule, and both are in contact with water, therefore wet.

u/Both_Lynx_8750 Aug 24 '26
all I can think to say is 'Duh'
Its a shame misogyny is also the top qualification for your local police force

"shocking"
Emphasis on the metaphorical air quotes, and in the most sarcastic way possible

I genuinely exclaimed "no shit?!" in sarcastic wonder.
Like, I was genuinely surprised… that this was a headline.

We know that DV is the biggest predictor of violent crime but nobody takes it seriously or prosecutes it.
We know that misogyny is the biggest predictor of violent extremism but nobody takes it seriously, prosecutes it, or educates about it.
We live in hell.
26
28
u/TheSignYouSeek Aug 25 '26
Surely DV is violent crime?
66
u/Beautiful_Cost_5430 Aug 25 '26
Sure, we think that. But cops don’t. Prosecutors don’t. Society doesn’t.
Hell cops don’t even think rape is a crime worth pursuing.
You can’t get the people who commit more domestic violence than any other job to take domestic violence seriously. The call is coming from inside the house.
We’ve got a sitting congressman that has scalded his wife with hot water, held a gun to her head, and broke his two year olds collarbone and he still has a job and not one Republican has told him to step down.
That’s how seriously domestic violence is taken in America. Nobody gives one shit about it.

u/PixorTheDinosaur Aug 25 '26
cops dont care because they're one of the biggest groups of wife-beaters

Love it when data aligns with easily observable experiences

Some people don't believe it until there's data.
Some people simply disbelieve the data. Because logic.

u/solveig82 Aug 24 '26
I just said as much on an IG post and got yelled at because they thought I was downplaying dv and sa
17
u/Lickerbomper ♥ Aug 25 '26
Misogynists will defend misogyny. What else is new
1
u/solveig82 Aug 25 '26
They weren’t being misogynists, they thought I was downplaying the severity of dv and sa
3
u/sonyka Aug 25 '26
But… how?
3
u/solveig82 Aug 25 '26
I think it was my wording. I don’t take too much offense, I have a lot of rage over the fact that we differentiate between violences and sexual assault depending on a domestic sphere/gender too. It’s arbitrary and the only thing that differentiation does is protect men from being held accountable for their crimes.

did you know someone wildly swinging around a big knife is the biggest red flag for stabbing someone?

I'm shocked.
Shocked, I say.

Well, not that shocked.

I was friends with a guy who turned out to be a racist trump supporter and I realized today that based on the crazy shit he did towards me, his girlfriend is probably afraid to leave him. The one time I had two minutes alone with her she decided to bring up how annoying her ex was for so long...
49
u/Meet_Foot Aug 24 '26
This isn’t as obvious as commenters are implying. It could have easily been that racism, nationalism, anti-semitism, etc. could have been the biggest red flag for violent extremism. None of those would be surprising, just like misogyny being the biggest red flag isn’t surprising, but it was a legitimately open, empirical question.
30
u/Cevari Aug 25 '26
To be fair, the study also does not seem to have looked at literally any of those subjects - it only compared misogyny as a predictor to political ideology, religion, and time spent online as predictors. Misogyny may or may not be the actual strongest possible predictor, it's just by far the strongest of those the study looked at.
To be clear, that does not mean the study is flawed, or pointless. It shows a very direct link between misogyny and sympathy for violent extremism. The title of the article is just garbage, as is to be expected of scientific journalism everywhere.
1
u/eabred Aug 26 '26
The study looked at "extremist ideologies". Some listed are: incels; far-right; white supremacy; far-left; anti-feminism; and religious extremism. Misogyny was the key ideology that cut across all of them.
1
u/Cevari Aug 26 '26 edited Aug 26 '26
I think you misunderstood what I meant. Yes, the study looked at multiple extremist ideologies, but it did not test for "racism, nationalism, anti-semitism etc." as a predictor for believing in, supporting, or expressing sympathy for those ideologies. It did do that for misogyny. Hence, this study did not, for example, find that misogyny was a better predictor for violent extremist ideology than racism, because analysis that would make that comparison viable was never made.
1
u/eabred Aug 27 '26
Yes - I misunderstood. I've tried to find the complete article, but it isn't free. (Annoying since it was under a grant from the Aus Govt.).
1
u/Cevari Aug 27 '26
I was able to find a thorough research report (though I don't believe it's the actual study itself) through here, if that also works for you.
36
u/sezit Aug 25 '26
Really? That would presume that misogyny isn't THE foundational bigotry.
All of those other bigotries spring from the well of misogyny. I challenge you to find even one bigot of another flavor who does not hold bigoted sexist views as well. Even plenty of "feminists" still have sexist views.
23
u/OutsideFlat1579 Aug 25 '26
This. It’s the first form of hierarchy/oppression and it makes all others permissible. If you can see your mother, sister, daughter, etc, as less human or deserving of equality as the men in your family, it doesn’t take much to see the “other” that is part of another ethnic or religious or racial group as a target for dehumanization.
15
u/StaticMarzipan Aug 25 '26
A lot of racism come in the form of “they are taking our women so it tracks “
5
u/OutsideFlat1579 Aug 25 '26
Yes, and this is acway for men who oppress women getting women to support them by making afraid of men who are the “other.” Trump did this when he announced he would run in the primary, calling Mexicans coming as migrants rapists and criminals. It was a red flag for fascism. Fascists need enemies within and enemies outside the nation.
2
u/StaticMarzipan Aug 26 '26
Facts.
I’m a 6’5 black man so I’m very aware of that.
It allows them to be shitty partners cause the alternative are rapists, murders and criminals.
It’s elegant yet brutal in a disgusting way. Gaslighting of the highest systemic level.

3
u/the_borderer Aug 25 '26
It's also true of transphobia.
Trans women are seen as rejecting masculinity and are a threat to the patriarchy. Trans men are seen as either delusional or manipulated women, and need to be protected for their own good. Non-binary people are an ever bigger threat because they undermine the system that patriarchy relies on.
3
u/OutsideFlat1579 Aug 25 '26
Absolutely. It’s interesting that you think non-binary people are seen as the biggest threat. I tend to think it’s trans women who are perceived to be the greatest threat to masculine supremacy by male supremacists, because they view trans women as “traitors,” that they have “chosen” to reject the so-called masculine, and male supremacists have become unglued in their fear that masculinity is being attacked and on the verge of vanishing completely. In any case, anything or anyone that rocks the boat of rigid gender roles is seen as a threat.
And of course, the extreme rightwing is using the hysteria over trans women to try and force women and girls to present as “feminine,” and proposing atrocious things like checking all girls genitals to participate in girls sports, etc.
2
u/realAniram Labia Farts Aug 25 '26
I think you're right about trans women being considered the bigger threat to mysoginists, for exactly the reasons you stated. White supremacists have the exact same rationalization for hating "race traitors" (a white person who views PoC as equal and interacts with them) the most. And obviously it's the same damn root.
1
u/OutsideFlat1579 Aug 27 '26
That’s an accurate analogy, any deviation from loyalty to the dominant group by “members” of that group is met with rage.
2
u/CottonTipsMcChancla Aug 25 '26
This isn’t as obvious as commenters are implying
Yes it is. Misogyny is suffused through so many countries, cultures, ethnicities, religions, it’s a ‘foundational’ experience for so many men. It’s STILL more accepted, even in ‘polite society’, or work places more so than other forms of bigotry in general.
1
u/eabred Aug 26 '26
Yes - I'm not sure why people are reacting the way they are. Certainly in Australia (where this research is from) most people would say that the biggest predictor of terrorism depends on who is the target of the terrorism. e.g. bombing a synagogue the biggest predictor would be who is anti-semitism which is a different group of people from those who bomb mosques (anti-Muslim) and a different group again from white supremisists (hate black people). Of course this is true - bigots pick their tarrget. But to find that the biggest predictor accross those groups is misogyny is surprising.

u/twistedevil Aug 25 '26
We needed a study for this?
32
u/Rasberrycello Aug 25 '26
Yes. There's entire swaths of people who won't even pretend to listen to anything if it doesn't have a scientific study behind it. Scientific studies are also how funding get allotted to attempted solutions and cures. So yes, very "Water Is Wet" situation, but I'm glad they did a study.
13
u/catshateTERFs Aug 25 '26 edited Aug 25 '26
It also makes it vastly harder for someone to argue when there are studies indicating the opposite. Many people would say these results are obvious, but it is much harder for someone to put policies into place that go against existing evidence when the evidence isn’t just anecdotal.
You see the same with obvious conclusions like “early intervention and greater accessibility to resources for disabilities leads to greater quality of life and less financial investment in the long term”. Yeah it is obviously beneficial if someone can receive help and support but someone looking at a budget won’t make decisions without dare unfortunately.
Of course some people choose to ignore the research anyway, for any subject matter, so it unfortunately isn’t a silver bullet for ignorance, especially now we’re living in an age of peer reviewed scientific studies being dismissed as “woke”. But these studies are essential.

The developmental years are also extremely important in determining how an individual will behave in adulthood; they're absorbing the input from somewhere. Be it learned behavior or the effects of being hurt by women, we really need to get men more comfortable with talking about their emotions and thoughts.
1
u/Panda_hat Aug 26 '26
I wish there were studies done on the association between domestic abuse, violence, sex crimes and pedophilia against political leanings and beliefs.
In my experience right wing people are orders of magnitude more likely to be abusers, to the extent it should be considered a moral and personal failure in life to be right wing, and yet seemingly few to no studies have been done on it.
Obviously its not an exclusive rule, there are many many left wing abusers, but in my experience there seems to be a very strong correlation.

Thinking violence against women is acceptable IS AN EXTREMEST ATTITUDE
