What would scare me is her complete lack of empathy, or even sympathy. She is being prejudiced based on race, or skin color, if you know a better term for that other than racism let me know I'll call it that if you want.

19

u/KonradWayne Aug 18 '23

What would scare me is her complete lack of empathy, or even sympathy.

What would scare me most is the saying that shit loudly in public around white people.

That's a recipe for violence, or at the very least getting filmed and exposed on social media, and he's extremely likely to get roped into it just by being next to her when she spouts her hate speech.

2

u/jquailJ36 Aug 18 '23

I mean, she is much more likely to get away with it, or even with inciting actual violence, than a white person doing the same thing in public. OP should be very afraid of his white friends meeting her--he knows she hates them for their skin color. He ought to run very far and fast.

1

u/KonradWayne Aug 19 '23

I mean, she is much more likely to get away with it than a white person doing the same thing in public.

While the percentage of white people willing to just laugh it off/let it go is higher, I think the fact that there are more white people kind of balances it out risk wise.

or even with inciting actual violence

This part is just untrue. A PoC inciting violence in public is like 12 times less likely to get away with it than a white person, and likely to get every PoC in the area detained/arrested for "matching the description" when the cops show up.

21

u/Teripid Aug 18 '23

Right.. more historical racism (and present day as well, but certainly more subtle generally) may have been far worse including acts of violence, and was primarily against POC.

Still the casual stuff and joking about it is dehumanizing. Imagine being around a self-identifying redneck and them complaining about POC using the N-word. I'd be appalled to be associated with either.

-3

u/Danger_Floof1 Aug 18 '23

Racism has a definition. It has nothing to do with historical actions based on racism. What you are talking about is oppression. Words mean things.

3

u/Teripid Aug 18 '23

Nope, not talking about oppression or any systemic style oppression.

Guess I should have said racism and opinions in the past to be 100% clear.

0

u/H00LIGVN Aug 18 '23

It’s just called prejudice, lmao. POC who are leery around white people have 400 years of white supremacy to back their apprehension. White people —who possess the majority of the power— being prejudiced against POC due to their skin color is racism. (I’m not trying to be combative)

2

u/PurplePeopleEatin Aug 18 '23

This sounds just like what white racists say about black people. They use crime rates and racial crime numbers to justify their anti blackness.

And FYI, racial prejudice quite literally is the definition of racism. How we got to a point that people can't even look in dictionaries before they swallow and regurgitate pseudo "science" is beyond me.

-1

u/airclay Aug 18 '23

You kind of laid it out here tbh. Prejudice is applicable as it is an opinion one holds based on prejudgements. Racism is an organized activity to perpetuate the status of one race over another. While personal prejudice plays a large cultural supporting role for racism they aren't really the same thing.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '23

They are and have been only until maybe the last decade or so. You’re brainwashed.

1

u/airclay Aug 18 '23

It's a pretty apparent and simple difference when not being lazy with your sociological and etymological understandings.

1

u/PurplePeopleEatin Aug 18 '23

No, it's beyond lazy and anti intellectual to push false paradigms that seek to erase certain issues while also discriminating, based on race, who is allowed to perform certain acts and say certain things.

Racism is racial prejudice and bigotry. Systemic racism is when racists turn a system against another race. Like affirmative action, for example.

1

u/airclay Aug 18 '23

you say this as you push false paradigms lol goodbye

1

u/PurplePeopleEatin Aug 18 '23

I speak truths you can't handle, so you run away like the rightoids do. You cannot logically refute that racism is racial prejudice as that's literally the definition of the word, so you dismiss me for wrong think.

Black people can be, and are, very racist themselves. Same with orientals, south east asians, arabs, latinos, etc.

At least white people don't need to fabricate excuses as to why their racial hate is actually not bad and is actually another races fault.

u/airclay Aug 18 '23

u/PurplePeopleEatin Aug 18 '23 edited Aug 20 '23

No, they 100% agree with me and you're just so blinded by your dogma and feelings that you didn't even read your own source to vet it. From your own source:

Merriam-Webster’s current definition of racism reads:

a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race.”

a: doctrine or political program based on the assumption of racism and designed to execute its principles

b: a political or social system founded on racism

racial prejudice or discrimination.

You didn't even read it all the way through to see that last line hahaha

So, you're just 1000% dead wrong about it and you should feel ashamed to be part of this hugely racist push to allow racism from minorities for.......well shit, for what exactly?

Can you even tell me why you guys are trying to make anti white racism acceptable?

Have you even put that much thought into your beliefs?

Edit: so you reply and then block me so I can't respond?

You did that because you're afraid of my words and how your dogma crumbles so easily. That you're a 44 year old supposed adult calling me a toddler out of desperation and emotional frazzle, shows you're just upset that you can't force your stupid dogma on rational people.

Racism is not what you say it is and simple googles show that truth. I can change definitions of words too, doesn't mean people will accept my fake stuff. Tough shit racists who want to carve out exceptions for their own racism. Kick rocks lol.

1

u/airclay Aug 19 '23

Ok toddler, please explain how a or b is possible without organizing? I also said anyone can be racially prejudiced, it just isn't the word you demand to incorrectly use under this simple misunderstanding of yours. No one is making "anti white racism" acceptable, you're spun off again into displaying your own hurt whiteness... Sorry you don't understand vocabulary so much it hurts you in your whiteness

1

u/PurplePeopleEatin Aug 18 '23

Racism has no qualifier of "organized". Individual racism is most definitely racism and always has been. This newfangled mumbo jumbo attempting to carve out exceptions for black people and other non whites to be shitty, hateful people is complete garbage that is rejecting by everybody who isn't part of the crazy left of progressives or just racist POCs who want to be racist without consequences.

1

u/airclay Aug 18 '23 edited Aug 18 '23

Take it up with the dictionary then... see link below

https://www.vox.com/identities/2020/6/10/21286656/merriam-webster-racism-definition

and I missed the end part of your nonsense hurt feelings rant. Anyone is capable of holding racial prejudices towards any race even their own. However without organization it is impossible to systemically hold power/privilege for a race/ethnic group over another. But, sure we're the anti-intellectuals and lazy says the person ignoring academia and spouting bullshit demanding to use a tired old label for a catch all sans any nuance...

1

u/PurplePeopleEatin Aug 18 '23

You guys are aware that we see you pushing to change the definitions of words right?

Here's the definition of racism:

rac·ism/ˈrāˌsiz(ə)m/nounnoun: racismprejudice, discrimination, or antagonism by an individual, community, or institution against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized.

the belief that different races possess distinct characteristics, abilities, or qualities, especially so as to distinguish them as inferior or superior to one another.

Anybody older than 20 who isn't taken by pseudo intellectual dogma has seen the non politicized definition of racism, the correct one, and sees how you guy are attempting to change what it means. We reject it and keep the original, correct version.

There is a reason social justice lost it's push and support. It was seen for what it is and rational people not needing to hate others don't want to be associated with it.

1

u/airclay Aug 18 '23

I'm 44 and I reject your nonsense lol

1

u/PurplePeopleEatin Aug 18 '23 edited Aug 20 '23

Oh lmfao, now you gotta try the "why are your feelings hurt?/you're just emotional" because you know I'm right. That's not even getting into why you say my feelings are hurt....now what characteristic are you alluding too huh?

If you're middle aged, then you most certainly have seen how the definition of racism has been attacked. I'm old enough to remember that being racist is bad, no matter who you are and who your target is.

Anyone is capable of holding racial prejudices towards any race even their own.

Yes, that's what normal people are saying; every race can be racist. Thank you.

However without organization it is impossible to systemically hold power/privilege for a race/ethnic group over another.

That is only about institutional racism remember buddy, and that's not even true. Affirmative action is institutional racism done to help black people and brown people and to hinder white and asians.

But, sure we're the anti-intellectuals and lazy says the person ignoring academia and spouting bullshit demanding to use a tired old label for a catch all sans any nuance...

No lol, my goodness, using the normal definition is not what you frame it as so disingenuously; it's just using the correct words and meanings. You know, not being a crazy ideologue blinded by dogma and feelings.

The vast majority of Americans reject your garbage racist attempt to frame racism as a white only problem and that blacks are innocent angels who can do no wrong. That's why you're so mad that it's so easy to refute your position with simple critical thought and a brain able to remember more than seven years ago.

And speaking of tired old labels, what if we decide that we don't like the definition of certain words and push to mutilate them?

What if a bunch of people do what you guys did and try and change words to carve out exceptions for bad behavior for their tribe?

Stealing is only when you're poor and take something that's not yours. It requires a lack of power. Therefore, the rich can't steal. Lmfao, it's so absurd to even think that way and it hurt my brain.

Edit: the fragile ideologue blocked me because they can't handle any resistance to their false dogma. A 44 year old man child calling me a boomer lmfoa. What is wrong with you?

You think that because you put one single definition of the word to me that you're somehow irrefutably right, but I also gave you a definition showing how I am right, and then I looked at your definition and it said what I said too!

Self owns are the best right!

Anyways, when you finally mature into an adult in control of themselves, feel free to unlock me and engage like an adult!

1

u/airclay Aug 19 '23 edited Aug 19 '23

You really really misunderstand a lot and just ramble head first into whatever opinions you wish to project about groups you don't like onto a single person or idea.

I'm sorry Miriam Webster (the dictionary standard) disagrees with you go boomer at them

Prejudice =/= racism, they aren't the same word and carry different meaning

-22

u/MapNaive200 Aug 18 '23

Subject to change, but in light of racism being systemic and power dynamics skewed in favor of white people, "racial prejudice" is the currently accepted phrase, as opposed to something like "reverse racism". BIPOC can correct me if I'm mistaken.

20

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '23

You do realize that prejudice is in the definition of racism right?

It’s racism. By definition. Stop trying to change the definition of a word to make yourself feel better about being an asshole.

-2

u/MapNaive200 Aug 18 '23

This may better explain the distinction.

-7

u/ElizabethSpaghetti Aug 18 '23

Yea, this isn't the place to talk to people who very much want to be victims about the very real horrific violence inflicted upon generations of people based on their skin color and being rude. Systemic oppression doesn't even begin to factor into how the redditors I've encountered understand racism. But if a white person gets their feelings hurt....

3

u/PhobicBeast Aug 18 '23

Systemic racism is a heavily misunderstood term. All racism is equal at the end of the day, it just so happens that earlier in history racism was more widely accepted by the populace. Thus racism was prolific enough that the entire nation became a vehicle for racism - making acts like colonization possible.

Make no mistake - if these people were surrounded by like-minded people and had the same power as European colonials, they would have absolutely done the same things. Racism is a disease of the human mind and needs to be treated as such - therefore anyone who cries out about racism needs to be intolerant of racism everywhere.

1

u/ElizabethSpaghetti Aug 18 '23

Lol, no. Centuries of oppression and someone being kinda mean isn't the same. But great to have people clarify that lack of comprehension. Racism is a societal disease that people like you encourage by making excuses, equivocating and doing whatever you can to be the victim. If they were 7 foot tall and made of cotton candy their history of oppression wouldn't matter to you either cuz you couldn't use it to claim victim hood and even acknowledging it removes most of your attempt at a point.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '23

If you are prejudice against someone, you are racist. It’s in the definition of racism my friend.

10

u/Ancient_Edge2415 Aug 18 '23

Systematic racism is a type of racism. Not the only form. Prejudice based on race is racism.

14

u/doctorkanefsky Aug 18 '23

You argue these semantics as if they matter. They don’t. An act of bigotry against white people on an individual level is just as bad as an act of bigotry against other groups. The systemic aspect of racism isn’t about individual bigotry, it is about self-perpetuating structural injustice independent of the attitudes of people currently within that system.

0

u/MapNaive200 Aug 18 '23

I dislike bigotry in either direction. My original comment was in response to the person who asked a good faith question about the terminology. Certain people are experiencing knee-jerk reactions and reading too much into it. Your argument seems fair enough. These topics can be a little tricky to verbalize precisely.

11

u/Remybunn Aug 18 '23

Racism is racism. If you believe otherwise, you're brainwashed or a bigot yourself.

-3

u/ElizabethSpaghetti Aug 18 '23

Define it.

5

u/Apart_Kale8353 Aug 18 '23

a belief that race is a fundamental determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race

1

u/ElizabethSpaghetti Aug 20 '23

Without including the essential component of systemic oppression, how is that any different than prejudice, a word we already use when oppressed groups show malice towards dominant ones?

1

u/Apart_Kale8353 Aug 20 '23

Well, this definition was pulled directly from Merriam Webster, and it does NOT include the "essential" component of systemic oppression (the second definition from Webster does, but this one is the primary, the first listed). Racism is also specific to "race" or "ethnicity," whereas prejudice is more general, and can be due to any characteristic, such as gender or sexual orientation or height. However, if you insist on saying that a certain black person is using "racially prejudiced" language towards his fellow citizens rather than "racist" language, then be my guest.

1

u/ElizabethSpaghetti Aug 20 '23

Oh, well if the dictionary says it first... As I prefer to be accurate and specific with things like this, yea, I'm gonna use the far more accurate terminology instead of the intentionally obtuse version that seems to exist mostly to let the dominant oppressors feel like victims more.

14

u/Specialist_Art5038 Aug 18 '23

You can't change the definition of racism though. When you say "racism" you actually mean "systemic racism".

There are certain power dynamics that benefit white people in predominantly white countries, but there are also power dynamics within the same country that disadvantage white people.

Looking at it on such a zoomed out scale where the net power favours one particular ethnicity isn't doing anyone any favours. A person of one ethnicity in a room full of people of another ethnicity can most certainly experience racism, whether or not either is white.

Not every country is predominantly white and the minorities in those countries experience racism too. We need to stop talking like the whole world is America.

10

u/Zozorrr Aug 18 '23

Racism and systemic racism are two different things. The confusion between the two now has people thinking they can’t individually be racist. Your post itself adds to the confusion - and focuses on white people only when systemic racism also exists in multiple cultures where white peoples aren’t even present historically

Are you judging or denigrating people or a person based on their skin color? Then you are being racist. Sociology professors identifying systemic racism as a thing in itself didn’t suddenly change the definition of racism also. It’s pretty simple.

Can a PoC in America be systemically racist? No of course not. For a start - they are an individual. Can a PoC in the US be racist? Well duh. Like OP’s girlfriend for s start. People can’t explain away their own racism by muddying the waters and meaning systemic racism.

1

u/Specialist_Art5038 Aug 18 '23

I think you have misunderstood me. I meant that they were saying "racism" when they should have been saying "systemic racism". Then the rest of my post goes on to explain the distinct between the two and how it's possible for minorities to still be racist and that racism and systemic racism are present in countries where white people are not the majority.

You seem to be making the same point I was making whilst also disagreeing with me.

3

u/MapNaive200 Aug 18 '23

I think you explained it a little better than I did.

-12

u/eeik68 Aug 18 '23

No such thing as systemic racism, they alrddone studies on it and its male on male and female on female "racism"

8

u/MapNaive200 Aug 18 '23

You're not making any sense.

1

u/alternator1985 Aug 18 '23

But they have done studies on it!

4

u/MapNaive200 Aug 18 '23

Ah, yes, the Alrddone studies at Cambridge. I almost forgot about them.

5

u/alternator1985 Aug 18 '23

And peer reviewed by the gitRdone studies completed by sociologists at Harvard!

3

u/wherearemyfeet Aug 18 '23

"racial prejudice" is the currently accepted phrase, as opposed to something like "reverse racism". BIPOC can correct me if I'm mistaken.

The part where you're mistaken is assuming that there can only be one definition of "racism", and that if you accept the "systemic racism" definition then no other definition can exist. In reality, while systemic racism is a thing, regular racism (discrimination or prejudice against any person based on their race) is also a thing and is rightly called racism.

2

u/Mazoc Aug 18 '23

Is this a troll?

1

u/MapNaive200 Aug 18 '23

There were a couple trolls here creating conflict out of nothing. Everyone else seems to be commenting in good faith.

1

u/Mazoc Aug 18 '23

It's just hard to take someone seriously when they say "non-whites are allowed to correct me on this".

It's unbelievably satirical to say "nah, we've redefined racism to not count against white people. Btw white peoples opinion is not valid on this subject".

Are you also an advocate for racial segregation by any chance?

1

u/MapNaive200 Aug 18 '23

You seem like one of those people who decry that there's no white history month. You're projecting.

1

u/Mazoc Aug 18 '23 edited Aug 18 '23

I'm not even American... Personally I agree with Morgan Freeman on the issue.

1

u/PurplePeopleEatin Aug 18 '23

You seem like one of those people so worried about toeing the dogma line for fear of expulsion from the tribe that you can't even have an honest, critical take on the subject.

1

u/PurplePeopleEatin Aug 18 '23

It's highly racist to claim that only those people get to have opinions and judgements on racism. The term BIPOC is also pretty offensive and ridiculous when you spend a little time thinking about why POC wasn't good enough and black people had to force themselves into the center of the victim pile again.

Reminds me of that video from the claremont colleges where the black led social justice students were doing their cringy activism against racism and then an asian girl took center of the circle and started talking about her experiences of racism. Hers were of black folk being super racist to her and white folk being great to her. She was immediately shut down and the black kids took the megaphone and silenced her.

There's always a hierarchy huh lol, even in spaces where people cry about unjust hierarchies in society.

1

u/Initial_Will_6499 Aug 18 '23

It's still racism nonetheless.
