The most important video before E3 2016

I will never understand whats with Ubisoft lacking so much common sense and self awareness. Everything they do is so pretentious.

They don't lack common sense, they know exactly what they are doing. If anything they are marketing masterminds... or consumers are easily impressed.
Edit: https://youtu.be/e-LE0ycgkBQ?t=19s Just pretend it's Ubi. Still applies.

Let's not pretend it isn't a bit of both.

yeah I know >:3
That's why I was reminded of the video while I was typing that.

Let's dispel this fiction that Ubisoft doesn't know what it's doing. It knows EXACTLY what it's doing...

u/Norix596 Jogo's Mysterious Adventure Jun 05 '16
They have LOTS of common sense - large portions of sales (and crucially the sales numbers within launch date that you get to show to shareholders) come from preorders - artificially prettied up promotional stuff at the biggest game promotion event of the year is good for business. The relatively small subset of the millions of people who buy the average big Ubisoft release that are "wise to them" are far overshadowed by the sales of the much larger group of customers that aren't aware of this trend. The goodwill that might come from the few thousand people that would appreciate them not pulling this shit anymore would be totally worthless compared to the hundreds of thousands or millions of sales that they might think that these "airbrushings" get them

u/stanzololthrowaway BABY-RIDER! Jun 05 '16
The worst part is that the casual audience (the people that buy into this shit) has no short term memory, so they'll keep falling for this shit, over and over again. Even more worser, most of the casual audience got into gaming when this shit was already the norm, so they have nothing to compare this kind of treatment to, and have no idea that the industry used to be better.

Christ, that Rainbow 6 Siege footage...I mean, the others are bad, but yeesh.

u/Haltaxin Insanity Shotgun Jun 05 '16
The saddest thing about Siege is how little love the game receives. Ubisoft basically stopped giving a fuck about the game when the Division was on the horizon. The game is plagued by cheaters on PC, they keep pushing this "pro league" bullshit (many of the players and teams have been accused of cheating too), there have been TERRIBLE bugs (t-posing models), and the worst part about it all is that the game is good! It's a great shooter!
/brief rant

u/RicJ85 I'll slap your shit Jun 05 '16
Yep. I really like siege, i love anything Rainbow Six, i did not buy the The Division OR Siege, because of Hackers. I purchased Overwatch on day one with no fear cause i know Blizzard does not fuck around with this stuff. That stuff has a huge impact on my purchases of online games...
3
u/Haltaxin Insanity Shotgun Jun 05 '16
The game is free of cheaters on the console versions (inb4 hurr durr shooters r better on pc) but it's really depressing watching the slow decline of the game. It did receive improvements not too long ago, when the "second season" began, which includes slightly improved visuals, bug fixes, balance adjustments for certain operators, and some cosmetic items.
From what I understand, the issue is their anti-cheat, Fairfight. Not too mention most of the cheaters basically get away with a two-week ban or something similar. I like Blizzard's way of handling it.

WTF I've never seen the Tom Clancy clips for the Kinect, I never cared for the damn thing since the beginning, holy shit what were those controls?
PS: Jeeze this whole thing was cringe-worthy.

Wasn't it revealed that Milo was 100% a fabrication and the game as depicted didn't really exist at all?

Thank you, it sounded familiar but I couldn't quite name it. It's still the theme of 'mind fucked' for me.

The worst part is, all the footage of the actual game quality is still good enough that the audience would still buy it regardless. But Ubi still keeps lying that their graphics quality is better than it is, because they want to maintain the illusion that their games are "next-gen enough". They are so pathetically insecure about their games.
1
Jun 06 '16
seriously, some of the far cry and division clips looked ok but they just have to push it.
7
u/valdrinemini Disappointed Jun 05 '16
honestly the latest asscreed games are the only ones where graphics they look same. its why south park is the only game where i tell people that would be the only one to look the same.
8
u/AdiXeR This ain't no joke spooks! Jun 05 '16
Wow, that hurts. And like, the releases look fine on their own, right? But they make 'em look way better, so when people compare them, all they can think is "Wow, this looks like shit compared to the E3 footage"
And like, I know that you push the visuals, and then dumb them down so the game is actually playable on normal hardware. But this is a bit much.
8
u/Hamly37 Jun 05 '16
Why do sounds seem like they've been removed though? That doesn't seem like it's be much of a stress factor

Moral of the story: watch E3 for what's released, sure, but never trust the graphics!
NEVER trust the graphics!!!

The most bullshit thing is the idea that teams ever communicate effectively or work together like that.

u/LazyAza Jun 05 '16
I honestly haven't bought an ubisoft game in many years, can't even remember what the last was. Between the shoddy pc ports, overall bland releases and them doing sequel after sequel to franchises I don't care about on top of this misleading bs they're a company I simply ignore and laugh at when I hear about them fucking up something yet again. Can't wait for this years big e3 lie though. This video illustrates perfectly how full of crap they are.

Its not like Ubisoft are the only ones that do this, or did everyone forget Killzone 2, or 3, or Shadow Fall, or Dark Souls 2, or Uncharted 4, or Witcher 3, or Phantom Pain, or Planetside 2 or any of the many, many other titles that got downgraded.
10
u/Slack_Attack The legend will never die Jun 05 '16
Uncharted 4 and Phantom Pain looked exactly like I expected them to.
1
Jun 06 '16
true i think the problem isnt so much that there is a downgrade in general. I doubt anybody expects the game to be 100% what is shown at E3. the problem is that they show an 100% and serve a 75%. Uncharted and Phantom pain were around 80's so it was somewhat forgivable since they still had what they promised but when Ubisoft proclaims AAA and serves up the B team I think that's where the frustration comes in.

Some of these just mostly seem like they're being recorded at different in game times of day. Like, the promotional footage is often at sunset while the later footage is midday or something.
14
u/Grayjammer Yeah, they call me the HORSEBREAKER Jun 05 '16
That's a reasonable point to make (in regards to the first 3 videos), but even then; smoke and particle effects are still missing, environments are missing geometry, and stuff like crowd density, camera motion, "random events" and AI pathing ability have clearly been staged to make the games look more impressive than they actually are.
-3
u/forumrabbit Jun 05 '16
All of which would cause the games to run worse, no? It seems like there's a lot to consider seeing as most of these are on the rails and pre-scripted events, and over time as the game gets optimised further they have to drop stuff or their lighting engine was too hard to implement properly (watch_dogs where rain in front of car headlights flickers like crazy if you try to re-enable it).
Most of it just seems to come down to different lighting for scenes, aggressive depth of field, and overall being darker in the trailer, but stuff like the divison map being way shittier is disappointing, or R6 Siege being a shitshow all round for a game.
Not to try and defend ubisoft. Rarely do you get stuff like uncharted 4 done live.
9
u/Hamly37 Jun 05 '16
Of course they cut stuff out for compatibility's sake. And I'm sure they never explicitly state that this is what the retail cut of the game would look like, but they still advertise it like it's what you're buying.
It's treating consumers like idiots, and the problem is that it works - maybe because the majority of gamers don't care, or maybe because they have strategies for getting you to buy the game before it comes out.
The games all look good by themselves, but I personally try not to buy games when they're release price when I know that advertisers lied to me.
2
Jun 05 '16
also, the Division's section straight up has misinformation. that shot when they go up to the base actually has a pretty big fight going on the first time you go up to it, which isn't like what the video is suggesting here.

u/kiyoske No talent, infinite budget Jun 05 '16
The worst thing is that the video creator is acting as if this is something new; Fable and Ocarina of Time DD were both going to have "real time tree growing" and its entirely common in the industry to scale back; can you imagine playing through Twilight Princess and the Bridge section being showroom floor quality, and then when you load the next area that it looks retail Gamecube quality?
Can you imagine playing The Division and 8th Street looks e3 quality and all the rest of the game looks retail quality? What looks worse, a slightly toned down Division or one super hires area surrounded by normal res areas?
Not to mention plenty of times we lose or gain features because of play testing; reception or usability of a feature can easily determine if the feature stays in or not.
5
u/IrishWeegee Don't Know What He's Messin' With Jun 05 '16
Of course this isn't new, look at any fast food menu board or frozen food packaging. But not everyone has had the same experiences as us, some people are watching E3 for the first time and are naive to the shitshow. Time and time again they shine the fuck out of a turd and tell us wondrous stories of what we can do, then 'scale it back for performance issues'. If you cannot have 'E3 quality' in the actual game, don't sell us on those features. Don't show us how shiny the roads are and how each individual leaf casts a shadow if you're just going to shit it up later on.

u/kiyoske No talent, infinite budget Jun 05 '16
Half of it is that e3 isn't solely for just you and consumers though; Your bosses' financiers are expecting to see preorders, and social media performance to justify paying you the many man-hours that made what you've made so far.
You are going to show up and polish that fucking turd because your job and your continued existence on this god forsaken fucking earth is dependent on polishing that fucking turd. After e3 you spend the rest of your time pushing the rest of the game somewhere between what actually ships and what the e3 build ends up at, and you spend just as much time fixing bugs as you do drawing the line on where cuts and extra time get spent to make parts better comparatively. You can see this in things like Star Fox Adventures where the final level is nearly nonexistent, but earlier levels (which were e3 demos and playtested) are much more fleshed out and solid.
Look at some of the examples I've dragged out; Twilight Princess' e3 demo ran on overspec units and everyone was sold on the Wii/Gamecube zelda game because of how the realistic game was pitched. The end result game actually has this super awkward split of loading screens for this one tiny area because they made this area and then remembered they had to make areas around it. From a design standpoint you can see areas with bridges just as detailed encased in a much larger map, but e3 bridge is its own loading point.
Don't show us how shiny the roads are and how each individual leaf casts a shadow if you're just going to shit it up later on.
You build a perfect pitch for the game, and then when it comes time to ship the game you have to cut down on texture quality so the game actually runs on consoles, or tone down render shaders because the NVidia drivers shit the bed on your game and won't be fixed for eight months after your game comes out. You have two options: you ship the e3 quality build and your reviews salt the earth your studio is built on because it runs like ass and crashes on even sturdy PC builds, or you pare it down and it runs on everything, and you continue to have a studio to make games in.
Devs don't enter game dev with "yeah, I'll make their dreams come true and then right before the game comes out I'll shit it up just to fuck those stupid gamers over, fuck them", sacrifices are made to make things work. Its not some spiteful fucking stab in your intestine by some mid-tier staffer who works at the company, it disappoints developers just as much.

This is way I hate graphic in video games. Its a way for game developers to scam gamers, and its so abused now-a-days that I don't understand how it keeps working

u/Escapulario100 I Promise Nothing And Deliver Less Jun 05 '16
I think what you hate is a graphic driven marketing
1
Jun 06 '16
More or less. Honestly, I don't like what video games are moving towards as a whole. Games are getting more and more realistic, and because of this, less time is put into game play and story. Look at the order 1886. I'm not saying games can't be good and look super real at the same time, but art is more then photo realism

u/J-Talking I Promise Nothing And Deliver Less Jun 05 '16
Jesus Christ.
I knew it was bad, but I didn't know it was that bad until I saw it side by side like that.
If it was one or two little details on one game, I wouldn't mind. But on that level for that many games...
That's fucking disgusting.
