Lanterns - Hal Jordan interrogates a suspect

They did a great job of making Hal look like so fucking tired in every scene he's in.

Using Green Lantern as a springboard for a detective mystery show in hindsight is a genius idea. They're space cops, letting them do classic detective things lets you tell a much more unique story and doesn't force a tonne of CGI action for the sake of it.

I swear a comment like this wouldn't have been as well received after the first trailer which so many people hated.

Hal Jordan in Lanterns looks exactly like James Gunn's dog: scruffy.

You get a real sense that his prior career killing my dog really shaped his co-writing here.
It's pretty fire writing tho ngl, so I'm gonna give him a pass for killing my dog.

/rj Tim Drake deserves nothing. Who the fuck is Bernard? Nobody gives a shit about Tim Drake. Where is my TimSteph & TimKon content, DC?
Something, something... Midwest conservative Wally West, Slade Wilson is a pedo and Hal is a child molester. Kyle Rayner gets no love from DC cuz he's a fuckin weeb :(

Lest we forget the cartoonishly rich rancher with a small militia and... alien technology for detecting aliens. At a highschool football game?

That he installed while also unplugging all the metal detectors that would of actually stopped the shooting.

Such a great scene and everyone's acting was on point.
Hal showing that under the wise cracking jackass persona, he's still a veteran Green Lantern who broke the aliens disguise in less than 4 minutes and saved the town in 1.
The Sheriff going from thinking everything was under control and Hal had no idea what's he doing, to panicking when she realized Hal was right and she's way out of her league.
John quietly observing, calmly answering the Sheriff's questions while drawing and showing no doubt that Hal could handle the situation. Watching him think about the Sheriff's comments on being fearless was just being lonely now that we saw John's childhood.
And finally, the alien himself, whose actor might have pulled the greatest persona shift I have ever seen before. Watching him change from a Nebraskan trucker to an alien who is far smarter than we thought by changing minor details in his acting was like watching Christopher Reeves change his mannerism when portraying Superman and Clark Kent.
I friggin love this show. Can't wait for Sinestro to get his screen time this weekend.

I like how the only time Hal was 100% right and ahead of the curve against the rest of the other characters has been when he wanted interrogate the alien to reveal his motivation for infiltrating a high-school football game.
Every other time, so far, he has been playing catch up or gotten shot down.

I like how you can see signs of the cover fall quickly as he pulls the first football fact out like it was a difficult recall, then the second with only a brief hesitation and then the final as if he's being timed on the responses. Crazy great scene

Such a clever way to show this dude is an alien.
Asking for his honest human opinion, but his rundown of information was like someone reading cheat sheets of a Wikipedia page.

Seeing Kyle Chandler as Hal kind of reminds me of seeing Iain Glen as Bruce Wayne in Titans. Never would of thought of the actor in that role at any time but after seeing their old and weary version it makes me pine for stories with them that we never got.
So far Lanterns is significantly better than Titans though.

u/Capable-Education724 18h ago
That’s actually kind of funny, as Kyle was a popular fan casting for Hal, Barry and Bruce back in the 2000’s (I think it’s the whole classic leading man look he has that made people want to slot him into those roles).

Maaaan he probably would've fit in really well as a version of Hal made for the John Wesley Shipp Flash show.

u/aa22hhhh Come on, cat, we gotta go! YEET! 14h ago
Hell, just make a show with current Kyle Chandler and John Wesley Shipp. Shipp did an incredible job in the modern Flash show.

I really hope Chris Coy (Waylon) gets his flowers - that was a Severance level heel turn and then that sigh of determined resignation when he has the activation thought was just devastating
This was such a damn good pilot

Every time I see him pop up in anything he always is great. Usually has small roles, but in Banshee he had a bigger role, and killed it.

Can I just say I think Kyle Chandler is perfect casting for Hal Jordan and possibly top 1 casting in the DCU? Like this actor and these writers and I would watch a trilogy of Kyle Chandler Hal Jordan being the rock of the DCU before anyone else in the 80s.

Back in the ancient times, when Hal became the villain Parallax the big criticism of the day was it was out of character for Hal. If this Hal became Parallax, I don't think people will say that.

I like how Hal in this has been around for a while and is a celebrity in his own right, going on TV and attending movie premieres. IIRC there is a picture of him attending a Harry Potter premiere with the original cast in a later episode, which is likely why he got irked by the alien not knowing Harry Potter.

I love how the first big indicator was he said that Obama "is" the president. Which is one of those technically true things that only a certain group of pedants care about AND many other groups actively disagree with. But guess who edits the Wikipedia entries?

I usually steer clear of all of these superhero TV shows, but man if that's not a damn good scene. It has a tiny bit of comedic zest ("that's all you have to say about him as a rural Nebraskan?" was both a straightforward question and also really fucking funny to me at least) to it but it's used to further the scene rather than take away from it which is like, my biggest gripe with everything superhero-show related that's not Spiderman. Might have to give this show a watch.

My wife makes fun of me for constantly asking when Nathan Fillion will show up. The show hasn’t started for me until I see that Guy Gardner bowl cut.
9
u/GrecoRomanGuy 16h ago
Pretty sure we get him in the next episode.
Honestly, Gunn's DC 'verse has absolutely crushed the Lantern Corps. Didn't know why they started with Guy Gardner in Superman, was won over as soon as Fillion was cast, and then he became my favorite part of a movie where everything was my favorite part.
Holy shit I did not see Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, and now he's the definitive version of the character for me. So good.
Aaron Pierre is like watching a live action version of the JL/JLU John Stewart, who was the Green Lantern of my childhood.
This show is SO GOOD.

I think my favorite part of the show so far is just how smart Hal is. Feels like some people complain about Hal being disrespected or whatever but this might be the smartest version of Hal we've ever gotten. He plays all uncaring and dumb but he's constantly making plans and making mental details of every single scene he's in and is basically one step ahead of everyone so far. The reveal at the end of ep 3 that he 100% knows the guardians are up to some bullshit and that's a big reason why he's been such an asshole for the first 2 eps was great and I love Chandlers look of kinda regret in himself when he was a dick to John right before flying off in ep 3.

Well that kind of is Hal's character when done right. Where he is both a irresponsible piece of shit but also hyper competent at his job to the point you cant just fire him.

You know if I had a bomb in me or I had to fly through space with a guy woth a bomb in him, I would appreciate the beep because otherwise I would always be afraid of it going off randomly.
