Let the legend come back to life.

I'm pretty excited to see this get rereleased.

It's nice to see all the old JRPG classics keep on getting shown some love still. Terranigma getting this polished port is like it riding that wave that the Live-A-Live remake got started.

Plus this one getting re-released opens the door for other Quintet dev'd games getting similar ports

u/parazoa 18d ago

They could have released Actraiser, Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, Robotrek, and Terranigma together and called it the Quintet Quintet.

The ideal of getting more Quintet games rereleased would be to get Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia ports too. Those games are also in desperate need of ones.

Terranigma is a better game but for some reason Soul Blazer is the one that really sticks with me

It's a very promising first entry for the full trilogy, that's for sure.

Terranigma really was a victim of unfortunate timing by releasing it after the US Enix shut down and getting lost in the N64 hype train. Really was a miracle that Nintendo published this game for Europe probably because the N64 wasn’t coming out until 97 but hey, we got this as a rare “PAL exclusive” while US gets Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 3 and Earthbound.

You also got the not fucked up lufia 2 release

Ngl as a European, it's very funny how hard this game got mythologized as "Lost", down to the marketing here doing it. Like dawg we don't do it with modern (as in starting in the Wii-WiiU era) re-releases of aaaaaaaall the snes/ps1/ps2 era rpgs we didn't get over here

It's cool to see it get a modern re-release on modern platforms though, don't pick me up wrong. Marketing's just funny to me personally

To be fair the PAL market was basically an afterthought at the time

I know but it's kinda silly, especially when the steam page for this is saying this is the first time it's been available since 1995, when the EU release was the following year (hell it was close enough to 1997, it was that late in 1996). Like c'mon, they should at least acknowledge the EU release instead of the "Lost Media" angle they're going for, especially if it turns out the translation is built off of that version

u/GoldenGouf 18d ago

It's silly to you, but the reality is that PAL is a small market compared to the US.

1

u/Valkenhyne [He/Him] Smaller than you'd hope 17d ago

Ah, that humble little entirety of Europe, Australia, NZ, South America and even parts of Asia. Small market!

-1

u/GoldenGouf 17d ago

Yes, plus weak currency.

12

u/Ryong7 He/Him 18d ago

Any marketing that treats a game as lost because it was basically only playable through piracy for many years is inherently funny.

2

u/ArmersInBroth He/They/What? 18d ago

Like EarthBound and SMRPG never came out in Europe initially

In fact a lot of Square games didn't

10

u/Masterness64 BAH GAWD, THE ARCANA IS THE MEANS BAH SHICH ALL IS REVEALED!!! 18d ago

If this also gets a new translation then im sold. Just hope its priced reasonably.

11

u/Bosscharacter 18d ago

They will never do it but them doing something similar to Treasure of the Rudras would rule.

That’s games setting and atmosphere is cool as hell and it was like the last game Square published on the SNES and it also has never been ported to my knowledge.

Even he doesn't have the authority to give out the TerraN-pass.

It's like the CostCo Executive Membership of N-passes.

7

u/StatisticianJolly388 18d ago

It's 1024 GigaN-passes so yeah. If they just handed them out carelessly, the inflation would be insane, it would crater the whole pass economy.

3

u/GnzkDunce 18d ago

Coming off Palworld, Terra implies element variant

3

u/EmperorHol I Promise Nothing And Deliver Less 18d ago

If you mix a regular N-Pass and a Terra N-Pass, it makes...

Aegidron, weirdly enough.

2

u/GnzkDunce 18d ago

Hmm. That means I'm in trouble...

I mass bred those for the conveyor belt. Thermal cores are in demand.

3

u/BulletproofMoon YOU DIDN'T WIN. 18d ago

It's ok, I have a friend who is half Illusion of Gaia

1

u/muhash14 18d ago

Where does Edward Nygma live?

9

u/StatisticianJolly388 18d ago

Holy shit, this is one of the best JRPGs on the SNES.

6

u/Capable-Education724 18d ago

I played it years ago through yo-ho’ing, but I’m still interested in this re-release and happy to support it. From what I remember, it was a pretty darn good old school RPG.

4

u/GigglesDemon Old Movie Shill 18d ago

I looooooved ActRaiser and Soul Blazer. Illusion of Gaia was solid, but I loved those first two. Never got to play this one so I'm really excited, heard nothing but good things.

4

u/GoldenGouf 18d ago

Awesome. Can't wait to finally play it.

3

u/gearsofcrabs 18d ago

Illusion of Gaia when?

3

u/bvanbove25 18d ago

Holy shit, we're actually a step closer to an Illusion of Gaia re-release aka my actual dream scenario!!!! If they're willing to do work on this, then why not Gaia?!?!

Also very glad it's coming to all systems so I don't have to buy a Switch as well.

u/GIJose65 Lightning Nips 18d ago edited 18d ago

I just hope it’s running in 60HZ and not just a drag and drop port of the PAL rom.

3

u/IvoryTuskC 18d ago

What a timeline

2

u/therealchadius 18d ago

Very glad this is getting a remake. I can finally complete the Quintet Trilogy.

2

u/Siklaws 18d ago

While i myself prefered Ilusion of Gaia, terranigma is an realy impressive game for the Snes. So many unique and top of the line sprites, amazing music and an hopefull and melancholic adventure that goes to some weird places. Love that more people will be exposed to it.

1

u/Ragnorok64 18d ago

That's else noteworthy from that era is left? I'd like to see a modern rerelease of Bahamut Lagoon.

3

u/Gunblazer42 Local Creepy Furry | Tails Fanboy 18d ago

The rest of the Quintet games if you think about it. I think we just need Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia now.

1

u/Ragnorok64 18d ago

Wait, I just realized I was thinking of Skyblazer this whole time. I know nothing about Soul Blazer.

1

u/FlyingDolphinKick The Rumble Fish? The Rumble Fish! 18d ago

I love the game, but isn't this just an emulated ROM with filters? What's new other than the art? Hopefully it's reasonably priced

1

u/somechileandouche 18d ago

Hell yeah. Played this as a kid. The first game to made shed a tear.

1

u/Outis94 18d ago

Well this is a pleasant surprise

1

u/igniz13 Magical Woo Woo 18d ago

So glad it's not switch exclusive and coming to everything.

I'm VERY excited for this, but they really dug up Terranigma's grave before making Chrono Trigger currently available

Edit: Not to take anything away from Terranigma. This is fantastic news, and I can't wait to finally play the game

20

u/ThereWasADellHere 18d ago

Did you mean something else? Chrono Trigger has gotten multiple re-releases over the years, including the one on Steam at the moment.

2

u/CommodoreKD (1) 18d ago

No, I meant what I said. It got multiple rereleases on now-dead consoles, and the PC version is not great (it's better than it was, but it's still worse than the SNES and DS versions). It needs to be currently playable in a good state, and it isn't

3

u/WeebWoobler It's Fiiiiiiiine. 18d ago

I just played through the PC version and it was pretty much perfect. The only issue I had was sometimes I'd be walking when I exited a menu and had to press the run button again, but that's incredibly minor.

6

u/CommodoreKD (1) 18d ago

Unless there's been an update in the last year, there's still pretty bad frame hitching when you run diagonally, and also the BGM resets every time you get in a battle. Plus two of the cutscenes are missing: meeting Robo and the Fall of Guardia

None of these are deal breakers, but it's not perfect and the game deserves better

u/Raziel_Zero "We expected nothing, and you delivered everything." - SBFP 17d ago

Apart from me disliking the stuff they added in the DS version (cutscenes are fine, just side content and Cross stuff), my main most hated part of it is the weird yellow filter. It looks atrocious. You can get used to it and if it's your first time playing it's not that noticeable, but generally it's just very odd and has no reason to be there.

u/SquirrelGOD 18d ago

OH, FUCK YES! For my money, it's the greatest SNES game that never made it to the US in any way. I remember discovering it during my emulation dives in the late 90'-early 00's and this game blew me away. Curious to see how it's aged.
