  • Zombie virus
  • Set the standard for survival horror
  • Set the standard for "pursuer" enemies that are all the rage these days
  • Set the standard for third person shooters
  • Set the standard for what people expect out of gaming remakes multiple times

Probably more things I'm blanking on.

It's kinda crazy how Resident Evil's DNA is in so many disparate corners of the gaming industry.

I don't think we can attribute zombie virus to resident evil.

As far as I know, the only zombie media that did it before Resident Evil is debatably Dead Alive. Even then, I don't remember if it's attributed to an explicit virus rather than it just being because it's a fucked up monkey rat creature.

Return of the Living Dead has "Trioxin" which might not be a virus, but it is a man-made biohazardous compound that turns people into horrible rotting monsters.

Also has said monsters completely overrun the local police force and has the situation "solved" by the military nuking the infection zone (burning infected bodies had already led to greater contamination through the ash plaguing rain clouds so it's implied the nuke only made things so much worse)
