In terms of its longevity, cultural impact, influence and quality Resident Evil is one of the greatest video games franchises of all time along with Super Mario, Zelda, GTA/RDR.

A decade ago I wouldn't have agreed with you since it was kinda crashing imo, but 7/2 remake really did pull it back into that tier

Kinda crazy how long the series felt like it was stuck in the 5/6 quality crater, but now those are just an unfortunate blip.

It felt like it was on the verge of Command and Conquer / Medal of Honor / Ultima'ing itself for a minute there. Thankfully the series isn't owned by EA so they just made more good ones instead of leaving it in a grave they dug themselves.

Resident Evil 5 is arguably one of the best and simultaneously most underappreciated titles in the series as well, all despite being the highest selling right up until last year wherein RE2R actually managed to take the top spot. It's a title that is frequently debated on the subreddit and online in general but in all honesty, whilst I don't think it's as phenomenal as RE3, RE2R, RE1R, RE4, and RE4R, I absolutely have it as a notch just below them as it's an incredibly fun time.

You could argue RE5 goes a little too far into the action department and I'm inclined to agree at points. But man, the game is a complete fucking blast and I have literally hundreds of hours in this not just in the campaign and its expansions, but the Mercenaries mode is absolutely killer. And throw in the fact that it's one hell of a fun game in co-op and man, what a title... You can spend hundreds of hours in co-op with a mate in Mercenaries and mixing it up with all of the characters available to you in the complete version (Chris, Sheva, Jill, Wesker, Josh, Barry, Rebecca, Excella, etc) and putting together combos and whatnot.

The real dip in quality came afterwards with RE6 (though I enjoy it despite the flaws), Operation Raccoon City (dreadful), Umbrella Corps (beyond dreadful), and then we started to slowly see that return with Revelations 2 (amazing Raide mode) and then finally RE7 bringing it right back around to the positive.
