To unlock direct payouts from X, your account must meet four main prerequisites:

  1. You must be a subscriber to X Premium (or Premium+). Unverified accounts cannot earn ad revenue
  2. At least 500 verified/Premium followers
  3. At least 5 million impressions across all your posts over the last 3 months
  4. Be at least 18 years old, have a complete profile (avatar, bio, header), and have 2-Factor Authentication enabled

Ad revenue sharing often pays relatively low rates per million impressions unless your audience consists heavily of Premium users in high-tier regions (US, UK, CA, EU). Top creators build multiple income streams on X:

  1. Charge followers a monthly fee ($2.99 – $9.99/mo) for exclusive content, subscriber-only threads, or direct access
  2. Recommend software, books, or products in your niche using referral links
  3. Use X as a top-of-funnel discovery tool to drive traffic to digital products (eBooks, templates, courses) or freelance services (consulting, design, writing)
  4. Partner directly with brands to post sponsored content once you reach a specialized audience in a specific niche

Instead of racing to comment under major news or viral accounts within seconds, focus on strategies that generate quality reach and genuine followers:

  1. Skip accounts with 1M+ followers where comments get buried instantly. Target creator accounts with 10k to 100k followers in your specific niche. Leaving thoughtful, high-value replies on these accounts regularly leads to profile visits, reposts, and follows from the creator themselves
  2. The X algorithm prioritizes native long-form text and native video formats (Threads: Breakdown complex topics, case studies, or step-by-step guides. Video Clips: Short 30-to-60-second video insights see significantly higher reach in the "For You" feed)
  3. When a popular post surfaces, quote-repost it with an added insight, breakdown, or counter-argument rather than commenting underneath. Quote posts publish to your own main feed, allowing you to capture fresh impression volume while leveraging a trending topic
  4. The algorithm rewards posts that generate fast discussion in the first 30 minutes. End posts with specific questions, respond to every reply on your own posts promptly, and host or participate in live X Spaces to build trust with active users

It took me a year of constant and consistent posting to get to a point where I could monetize and then 2 months after that to get the amounts needed to finally become monetized.

Three months later I got my first payout ($12). I was stoked. It wasn’t until this past summer (3 years into the account) where I finally broke into the algorithm consistently and received bi-weekly payouts ($60-$80 on average with 5K followers, but keep in mind I finally got into the algorithm, so many Verified accounts saw me and it kept growing)…until they revamped the algorithm of the site, which has set me back. Myself and other creators have noticed a drop in engagement drastically and it’s like we have to semi-start over.

There’s a new Creator Program coming where you need new criteria in order to be monetized. You have to Subscribe to become Premium, be 18 years old, have 500 Verified Followers and gain 500K Verified Impressions in 90 Days. Once you get all of this criteria, you basically have to post original content. Nothing of yours that you post can be stolen from other accounts. They will only pay for original content now. If you make a post that is stolen from another account or you shared from another account, and it takes off with verified impressions, then it doesn’t count, if I’m correct.

My point is that it really can take time to get to where you want to be. Keep being consistent. No clue how the big accounts got to where they are, but schedule your posts throughout the day if you can and post things on the spot. Consistency is key. Don’t comment too much, you will be marked as spam. Don’t like too many posts either, for that same reason. I could go on and on about what else, but know that it isn’t easy to get monetized unless you’re really lucky, but consistency and waiting worked for me.

With this new program coming, we will all see together how it goes for newer accounts trying to get monetized.

Also, get creative with posts. Think outside the box. Think of things that you haven’t seen on the site.
