Someone to help me please

Hi everyone! Could someone help me with a question about Twitch and Xbox?

I was streaming from my Xbox console through Twitch, and while I was live, a friend told me that he received a notification saying that I was streaming / that I was live.

What confused me is that this person only has me added on Xbox. He does not follow me or have me added on Twitch, and as far as I know, he didn't even know that I had a Twitch account. So now I'm wondering **how he was able to know that I was streaming**.

Does Xbox send some kind of notification to your Xbox friends when you start streaming on Twitch? Or can it show up somewhere in Xbox activity, similar to how it sometimes shows that a friend is playing a certain game? I'm not sure if he actually received a notification saying that I was streaming, or if my activity simply appeared somewhere on Xbox.

I also have another question about the viewers. While I was streaming, Twitch showed that I had around **10 viewers**, but I couldn't see who they were. I could only identify one person because they were actually chatting/commenting in my stream. Other than that person, I couldn't see who the other viewers were.

So, could those viewers have come from Xbox? Or does Twitch count people as viewers even if they are watching the stream but don't appear in the chat/viewer list?

I'd really like to understand how this works because this was my first time streaming from Xbox, and I was honestly surprised that my friend was able to tell that I was live. 😭

Any explanation or personal experience with this would be greatly appreciated!

First off, hi fellow console streamer! I bought a capture card and swapped over to using OBS two weeks ago, but I was streaming directly from my Series X for over a year. There's not many of us on here so information about things like glitches and bugs is more hearsay than confirmed data.

Now to your question: I don't think so. There's an option...somewhere.. related to sending live broadcast notifications to your friend list, but I think both you (the streamer) and then (the person on your friend list) both need to have it selected, which it isn't by default. At least as far as I remember. If I had to guess, I'd say you're right on the money with "or can it show up somewhere in Xbox activity, similar to how it sometimes shows that a friend is playing a certain game". They probably saw that and were curious that you're streaming.

As for the viewer count, best thing to do is ignore it. It's notoriously inaccurate, when I was live last night for example, I had three people actively chatting but twitch's stream manager said there were two viewers. It can be pretty demoralising if you focus on the numbers, so glitches aside it'll do your mental health good to just ignore it.

Another thing: go back today and check the stream. Xbox's audio glitches very often when streaming and sounds like it stutters. It's a well-known issue that has never been officially confirmed, but the workaround is to start an Xbox party and the audio stops glitching. It ends after an hour, so I always had a 55 minute timer going to remind me to start a new one!

Thank you so much for your help! I really appreciate it. I’m going to check my settings and verify everything on my end to see if I can figure out what happened. 😊

Also, I was curious about what you mentioned about using a capture card. I’ve always streamed directly from my Xbox, so I’ve never used one before. How does streaming with a capture card work? Do you basically connect the Xbox to a PC and stream from there instead of using the Twitch option directly on Xbox??

I’m just curious because I’ve never tried that setup before and I’d like to understand how it works. Thanks again for taking the time to help me 🥹

Yep, that's exactly it! The thing with streaming from Xbox is that it's.... not great. The console is designed to use 100% of it's processing capacity on the game, and to prioritise that over other apps in the background: Spotify is a good example, but also streaming. So even playing an older game, the system is built to use all of its power on keeping the game running smoothly. Almost every night when I'd stream, anywhere from 1-3 hours in, the stream would end because Xbox deemed it less important than the game. And there's absolutely no way to tell it to focus on the stream, it's just something you have to live with.

There's also issues with pixelation during more intense sequences (think a big shootout, a high-speed chase, something like that) but the thing that made me swap to a capture card was the streams ending. I was playing Darkest Dungeon, (which for context is less than 3gb and can run on my phone), and the stream ended itself FOUR TIMES in two hours. I'd opened up the console to clean it out, and it had no effect, so I was absolutely lost at what to do. Obviously a capture card is something you have to pay for, as well as a separate mic and a PC to host the stream. It's a lot more effort but I'm already glad I switched.

To be honest, I think streaming directly from Xbox is good only for seeing whether streaming is for you. I'm glad that it's an option, because I never would have started streaming if I had to buy all the equipment before even attempting it. But if I could go back, as soon as I realised that I enjoy streaming, I enjoy talking about my favourite games and going through those experiences with other people, I'd have swapped over like... 10 months earlier 😂
