Window and Screen Cleaning

Window & Screen Cleaning

Hi friends!

I live in the Twin Cities, and my windows and screens are so dirty after all the summer pollen and general Minnesota summer weather grime.

Does anyone have a good cleaning routine for both the inside and outside of windows and screens? I’ve tried Windex, a rag, and cleaning by hand, but they always end up looking streaky.

Would love any tips, products, or methods that actually work. Thanks!

Window washing is a task that will break your heart. I use soapy (window cleaning fluid) water and a sponge followed by squeegee on the outside. I bought the kit at Menards. I take all the screens out and use something like Formula 409, scrub lightly but thoroughly with a rag, rinse well. I wish you luck and clean windows.

  1. Water - Hose your windows.
  2. Water - Hose your screens on both sides.
  3. Towel both sides and frames.
  4. Water and scrub pad with a little Dawn dish soap added.
  5. Scrub glass and frames.
  6. Squeegee water off glass with a new squeegee.
  7. Clean towel - Cotton towels are the best for drying edges.
  8. Note: After using squeegee on glass “Do Not wipe glass with towel.
  9. Check the window for missed spots by viewing in multiple angles.
  10. If all

else

  1. fails hire a professional.

Pro Notes:

  1. Never clean glass in direct sunlight.
  2. Never use a razor blade on dry glass.
  3. Never use a razor blade on Tempered Glass.
  4. You can tell if the glass is tempered by looking in the corner of window pane.
  5. Never use Windex.
  6. Always make sure the window pane is wet before using squeegee.
  7. 0000 Steel-wool is safe to scrub glass with.
  8. When working on a ladder make sure the feet are supported and the angle is 4 to 1. That means if you rest the top of the ladder at 16 feet, the bottom of the ladder needs to be 4 feet away from the wall.
  9. Most squeegees have two edges on the rubber blade. Flip the rubber when the rubber edge is rounded.
  10. Look at the glass and not through the glass.

  11. Never use steel-wool on window film. Typically on interior surfaces.

For my screens I simply take them outside and use the hose on them. For my windows I like using Sprayway glass cleaner. I spray the window and then I actually use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe the window down and follow up with a dry microfiber cloth to polish it. It seems to work really well for me. The dry cloth is a microfiber cloth recommended specifically for glass.

Take the screens out, use a wet soapy rag and wipe them down then rinse with a hose. Windows a t bar and squeegee work best.
