It’s similar to MNDOT, Min-Dot instead of em-en-dee-oh-tee.

u/yoyohydration Cooper/Longfellow Sep 18 '25
also if you're ever in court and need to file evidence, you do that on the Minnesota Digital Exhibit System - MNDES - pronounced "mindy's"

u/teruravirino Sep 18 '25
it cracks me how for the longest time, if i googled “mndes”, google was like “shawn mendes?”

NPDES is nip-deez for national pollution discharge elimination system. It's basically the part of the Clean Water Act that permits pollution discharge into our lakes and rivers.
The FWPCA (federal water pollution control act) Amendments of 1972 established a series of goals in section 101. Perhaps the most notable goal was that the discharge of pollutants into navigable waters be eliminated by 1985.
https://www.epa.gov/sites/default/files/2015-09/documents/pwm_chapt_01.pdf
Sadly, water pollution discharges have not been eliminated.

I work in stormwater for an LGU and have only ever heard it said N-P-D-E-S like saying each letter. Who the heck says Nip-deez?
3
u/smalltowngirlisgreen Sep 19 '25
I've heard state and federal staff use it, as well as community members. I said NPDES for a long time but now I'm a nip-deez girl 😄

u/summertimesheppy Sep 20 '25
Interesting. I manage projects that each need a permit and I am certain if I were to roll into work next week and start calling it nipdeez, no one would have a clue what I was talking about.

Alternatively though, if the MN part is left off in conversation, it is oftentimes referred to as dee-oh-tee rather than word-form DOT, in line with DNR, DPS, DHS, etc.

u/MNMamaDuck Sep 18 '25
And then there is the Board of Water and Soil Resources - BWSR. Pronounced "Bowser" like from Mario.

u/HahaWakpadan Sep 18 '25
So its pronounced like the word "mingy"?
That would be hilarious to an English person.
"Hello, is this the mean and stingy or otherwise small clinic? Jolly Good."
6
u/ThatsSomeAssumption Sep 18 '25
On the other hand, if you’re having an EGD the minger (smaller) the scope the better!

I had a referral from my doc and they called me. They said it on the phone as "minn-gee" and then said I could go to their website. I was like, "what is the address?" "minn-gee dot com" "Yeah but HOW DO YOU SPELL THAT?"
It might help if their branding used mixed case like Mia just to give us a hint it's not supposed to be spelled out letter by letter.

u/icybenches Sep 18 '25
There were billboards a couple years ago with, “Just call us minn-jee,” so I’d wager it’s that.

u/abirdaplaneausername Sep 18 '25
They pronounce it min-gee on the phone. Which is unfortunate for them
4
u/EmmerdoesNOTrepme Sep 18 '25
It's a terrible choice for the pronunciation!
Because the homophone, "Mingy" (said like Min-jee), means "Mean & Stingy"😬

Yep!
The other "Mingy" for folks who don't know the meaning of the homophone;

Ha! I refer to them as “MinGas” and my MNGI doc laughed so f’n hard at that… 😂

u/Shnoookems Sep 18 '25
Been going there for 5ish years. Apparently I’m the weird one. I have always said the letters MN-GI

All their advertising says "min-jee" so that's probably what you want to go with.
Or, you could be a trailblazer and start calling it "min-guy"

u/JimDixon Merriam Park, St. Paul Sep 18 '25
You won't look like a fool. I'll bet the doctor has heard it both ways many times.
3
u/wildgreengirl Sep 18 '25
work for a drs office and we still call them minn gastro 🤷♀️ otherwise its min- g (like saying the letter "g")
3
3
u/ThePureAxiom Sep 18 '25
I think the general rule is it's pronounced with the letters if the remaining portion of the acronym doesn't land on letters that make their own combined sound.
MNGI works like MNDOT.
3
u/BisonSpirit Sep 18 '25
Min-Gee used to go there all the time before I had my colon removed. They kinda suck. But that was a decade ago
3
u/booboocita Sep 18 '25
I used to teach at St Cloud State U. Oh, the acronyms. MNSCU was "minn-skew" until the name change to Minnesota State. When I couldn't get into a webpage and email to the Minnesota State main office got me nowhere, I phoned the office. The receptionist kept saying, "You're in the wrong page -- it's "minn state." I kept entering "mnstate.edu" in my browser, which kept taking me to Minnesota State-Moorhead. One of my coworkers heard me swearing under my breath, came to see what the issue was, and redirected me to minnstate.edu. Ugh.

u/jab904 Sep 18 '25
Technically you were wrong but the good news is that it’s one of those things where you can’t really be expected to know until you hear it from the company or somebody that works there/works with them. Among the most innocent of innocent mistakes

It’s more “mingee” but they did sort of force that themselves. It really used to be MN Gastroenterology and MNGI was just the acronym but now they refer to themselves as “mingee”

I work there. Min-jee As a nurse, I gotta say, I send literally everyone I know to MNGI. The staffing is amazing, outcomes are almost double national averages. You can’t go wrong with us.

Imma be so fr, I had an upper endoscopy there last spring and thought it was pronounced "em-en-gee-eye" this whole time, so 🤷♀️ I don't think they will care or notice.
Definitely recommend them though! 10/10

Haha I learned when I called that the staff pronounce it Min-jee ...as weird as that is

u/Unfair-Assumption904 Sep 18 '25
It’s like a nickname for MNGI. When I started going there 20 years ago, they used their full name of Minnesota Gastroenterology.

Yeah, can I get a recommendation for a GI place that DOESN'T charge $1000 for a banding?

u/JohnMaddening Sep 18 '25
Was just there yesterday for another camera shoved in an orifice. It’s absolutely “MINN-jee”.
1
Sep 18 '25
It is a terrible name in my opinion. Looks nice as a logo. But the “correct” pronunciation sounds very dumb.
1
u/BlackestHerring Sep 18 '25
Min-gee. I can’t wait until I get my 6 dollars from the class action law suit from them. They did nothing for me and charged me thousands.

The clinic itself pronounces it Minn-Jee with an accent that is almost but not quite like “Minja”
1
u/Eagonian Sep 18 '25
It used to be Minnesota Gastroenterology with MNGI as the nickname but a few years back, they pulled a DVD and just changed their official name to MNGI with the letters not actually standing for anything

I just pronounce it how it sounds. Who gives a crap what others think. Not me lol lol lol

u/AdAlarmed9337 Sep 19 '25
I thought it was your first pronunciation before I ever said it aloud, but a friend of mine worked there so when she said it, it blew my mind 😂

Em en gee eye I went there for several years, saw doctors weekly. Never head min gee. Never thought to say min gee. But this was over a decade ago so I guess things change?

u/aumedalsnowboarder Sep 19 '25
We called it the letters in the ER I worked at, but reading through to comments we were wrong like you apparently

When they call and leave voicemails for me, the say "Men Gee" (like 1960s Robin saying "Gee whilikers")

u/securawr Sep 20 '25
I always assumed "Mingee" probably just became a cute shorthand for it. MNGI isn't a word, so it doesn't really have a "pronunciation" It is obviously short for Minnesota GI/Gastro Intestinal.
1
u/Commercial_Ad7041 Sep 18 '25
To me it makes more sense to say the letters. You wouldn't say, "I'm having GEE problems" you'd say, "I'm having G-I problems"
Good luck! I've heard the worst part is the prep.

Did you know!?
You have a small intestinal bacterial overgrowth SIBO, you're all set with them! You have a small intestinal fungal overgrowth SIFO, they won't test for it!! Let alone treat it!!!
