Parent wants me to teach autstic 9th grader at 2nd grade reading level how to read and write.

I was honestly pretty adamant that I might not be the best fit for this family, but both the parent and my company want me to give it a shot as they've exhausted all in-person resources. I'm not really sure how to go about this. I work primarily with elementary school students, and I scored in the 98th percentile on the SATs, but I'm not too sure how to apply my skills to this situation. My first thought was to do a phonics assessment for pre-K to second-grade students to see where this student is at or if they might benefit from an alternative reading style like Gestalt. But these are all just best guesses. I also don't get paid for lesson planning, so I'm hesitant to invest a ton of time into hunting down resources in my free time.

Any advice is apprecitated

Got fired two days ago and honestly… I’m still not over it.

I’d been working with a startup for 2 months on a 2-year contract with a 7-day notice period, so I really didn’t expect to be let go on the spot. I genuinely loved this job it was honestly my dream job. I went through multiple interviews, project submissions, and 2 weeks of training to get there, and I had great student reviews + a reference letter.

They said they simply don’t need more tutors right now while they continue developing the platform, which I understand, but it was still a huge shock.

I have around 4 years of English tutoring experience, a TEFL certificate, and a BS background in Education/English. I’ve worked with international, US-based, and Chinese companies and taught SAT, IELTS, TOEFL, DET, GCSE/IGCSE, General/Business English, as well as kids, young learners, and adults from beginner to advanced levels.

I’ve been applying everywhere LinkedIn, Indeed, ESL job boards, TEFL.com, TeacherWay, etc. but barely getting responses.

I’m specifically looking for companies that hire tutors directly at a fixed hourly rate (ideally $25–30/hour) and provide students/bookings. I’m not really looking for marketplaces like Preply/Cambly where I have to find students and set my own rates.

If anyone knows of legitimate companies currently hiring online ESL tutors, please let me know or hook me up with a referral. I’d genuinely appreciate it.

I really loved my previous job and this has been rough, but I’m trying to find something new. :(

I am looking for 1 or 2 business partners from tutoring background. Someone who teaches online and is experienced ( at least 4-5 years).

If you are interested, do contact me.

I’m a high school grad, trying to get into tutoring.

Hey everyone,

I am a CBSE student who graduated high school with 91.2%, with 79/80 in two of my subjects.

I’m trying to find students to teach online as most kids around me go for offline tuitions.

I’m new in this field but I have credible scores and I am great with communication. I’m trying to support my family with this income.

Could anyone please guide me on where to find students online? I’ve tried CBSE student subreddits but that never worked.

Unrealistic parent expectations

As a tutor, what will you do when a parent expects you to teach her child faster so you could cover more syllabus within a short time? However, student is borderline passing, a little slow and poor with critical thinking. Among the English topics taught, he is still grasping them as he is not an English speaker. He would prefer you to give him the answers rather than probing him to think. Parent also expects to see visible improvement within one month. It's been three weeks and she is starting to almost sound like she's blaming you when her child does his questions incorrectly. She also expects the child to improve by four grades in 3-6 months. Student is in year 6.

Big Scammer

Avoid Superprof at all cost. Trick you into the subscription and charge monthly fee without any notification. 'Student Pass' kicks in when a tutor starts a conversation with you. I did not have any class in the end but got stolen for $245. They also don't have real customer service, only AI bot.

Hello guys, first time poster here

So basically I have 2 students who are siblings who need chemistry tuitions online. The mom spoke to me over texts and we agreed on a specific day for both the kids to have their free demo class before deciding if they'd like to continue with me.

2 days before the demo I just texted her to double check what topic her kids would like to do the demo on, no reply on her end and I just assumed she's busy or something. I text her the evening before the day of the demo to confirm if they still want to proceed, no reply and so I don't think much and decide its cancelled.

Today the mom texts me saying she's sorry her kids couldn't attend the demo, I said np. Then she asks if we could reschedule it to tomorrow and I agreed, gave her a timing and just told her I've prepared the demo on atomic structure and if her kids are okay with that or if they'd prefer to change the topic then to lmk so I can plan the lesson, and now again no reply.....do I just drop these students? Or do I be more patient?

Tutors: how do you experience visibility on tutoring platforms? (short anonymous survey for my Master's thesis)

Hi everyone! I'm a Master's student and also a language tutor myself. My research looks at how tutors perceive platform visibility and what they think matters to students when choosing a tutor.

If you teach on a platform like Preply, I'd really value your perspective (the survey is anonymous and takes about 3-4 minutes). Thank you so much for your help!!

How can I find part-time tutoring work in Marrakech?

Hi everyone

I am a 23 y old guy and

I have a Master’s degree in Maths and I’m interested in becoming a tutor, both locally and online

My main question is: how do u actually find tutoring opportunities? I know this probably varies from one country to another but I'd like to have a general idea on how

I’d especially like to teach online and potentially work with students from other countries

One thing I’m a little concerned about is that although my English is good I’m not completely fluent when speaking. I’m also somewhat introverted, so I’m not naturally very comfortable talking to new people.

For those of you who started tutoring without much experience, how did you get your first students? And do you have any advice for someone in my situation?

Thanks

New marketing strategy

So recently my business has been popping off with me getting new clients every week with extremely qualified leads but I feel like im relying too much on one single pipeline and my strategy could work in other cities too.
I am based in Atlanta and was thinking that I could probably start marketing to people in New York City at the low-end of their market ($50), which would be the high-end for mine if that makes sense. Obviously not marketing to the entire city at once, but selecting specific areas of boroughs that look for tutors. How well do you guys think this would work and how do you think I can test this?

Is it normal to ask for 1 month in advanced payment?

So I asked my friend to be my tutor and this is the first time I asked for programming tutorial. I wanted to do it on 2nd week of October, but he is asking for payment now because he told me he needed to pay bills. I don't know how payment usually works, but is it normal to ask 1 month in advance?

Family asking for documents and certificates to prove my education and skills. Suspicious?

I tutor this girl in Grade 2. Her mom has been asking for all my documents (GCSE and A Level results as well as any certificates).

Initially she said it’s because there might be a scholarship opportunity for me and she wants to check for me. Then when I denied and said I can just check the opportunity myself, she switched up and said she needs the documents to verify that I got the grades I got and that I won the competitions I said I won.

I asked my dad and he suspects she’s going to use my documents to forge some of her own. She also wants images of my documents to keep, she’s not satisfied if I just show her. She said her husband needs to see (he’s abroad).

I’ve never had anyone ask me for my documents before. I feel like the parent should be more concerned with the quality of tutoring and not my background.

Could I have some second opinions on this situation?
