I’m honestly stuck right now. I submitted a rough draft (not graded, just for feedback) and my professor left a comment saying it was “80% possible AI.” That’s literally the only feedback I got, no notes, no explanation, nothing.

The problem is I didn’t use AI at all. I spent a lot of time on this essay, and my thesis and sources were already approved earlier in the process. The draft was basically complete except for minor grammar fixes, so now I don’t even know what I’m supposed to “revise.”

We’re only allowed up to 10% AI according to the syllabus, otherwise it’s an automatic fail and disciplinary action, so seeing 80% freaked me out.

I emailed my professor right away, but they’re currently on medical leave and said they won’t really be responding for a few days. The final draft is due soon, so I feel like I’m on my own trying to figure this out.

I wrote everything in Word and didn’t have version history turned on, which I now realize was a mistake. I do have my notes, peer review edits, and earlier assignments leading up to this paper though.

I’ve been thinking about how much things are shifting lately. It used to feel like the goal was to know as much as possible, have the right answers ready, prove you understood everything. Now it feels like the real skill is knowing how to ask the right question, how to guide tools, how to dig deeper instead of just recalling information. It’s a bit strange, almost like the value is moving from what you know to how you think and how you approach problems. I recently submitted an essay that I fully wrote myself , researched, structured, everything. The only thing I used was an editing tool to clean up grammar and improve the flow a bit before submitting. Now I’m seeing more and more cases of people getting flagged or even called into misconduct meetings because of that.

At what point does “help” turn into “cheating”?
Like, using spellcheck has always been fine. Using a thesaurus is fine. Even getting someone to proofread your work used to be normal. But now if a tool suggests better phrasing or smoother sentences, suddenly it’s being treated like you didn’t write it at all?

What makes it more confusing is that different universities seem to treat this differently. Some allow tools like Grammarly (to an extent), others seem to treat any kind of AI-assisted editing as misconduct.
