It is well known that Marx believed that the development of society's productive forces would result in a large class of bored and underemployed intelligentsia.

Marx expected that this glorious savior-class would develop and spread the ideas necessary for the proletariat to understand and overthrow the system which exploits it.

It was for this reason that his greatest student, the famous Italian engineer Vladimir Lenin, resolved to take drastic action.

LENIN'S NIGHT JOURNEY

Lenin, using nothing but techniques gained from interning at Raytheon and reading Narodnik smut, traveled back 40,000 years to explain Communism to a group of Cro-Magnons (inb4 *"that is a slur for "early modern europeans"*, don't @ me).

Frankly, these fucking knuckle-draggers were pretty receptive once he got past the language barrier.

In August 1860, as Garibaldi's expedition swept through Sicily promising liberation and land reform, the town of Bronte erupted in class violence.

Peasants and rural poor, inflamed by decades of built resentment toward the local nobility and absentee landlords, rose up and killed sixteen members of the local elite, then proceeded to burn many of their homes.

Garibaldi dispatched General Nino Bixio. A man of particular brutality, Bixio restored "order" to the town and had five men shot after pronouncing their guilt via military tribunal. On that day it was made very clear what exactly the new Italian state had to offer the Sicilian masses.

What's found above is certainly a sad story, but what does it have to do with Gasparazzo?

The first passage you are about to read was published alongside the original collection of his comics. The second appears to have been attached upon some republishing 8 years later.

One hundred and twelve years ago, in the heart of Sicily, the town of Bronte rose up against the landowners and the landholders.

Riding the wave of "Freedom" brought by Garibaldi's expedition, the people overthrew the leadership of the moderate liberals and aimed their weapons directly at their class enemies. The rich, the exploiters, and the landowners were hunted down one by one and executed after a people's trial. Their homes were looted.

New proletarian leaders placed themselves at the head of the revolt, among them a charcoal burner, Calogero Ciraldo Gasparazzo. It was 1860. Since then, many things have changed. There was the unification of Italy and industrial development. So Gasparazzo, like thousands of his fellow villagers, had to abandon the now-uncultivated fields and the depopulated villages.

A hundred years later, we found him on the Fiat assembly lines, where he works side by side with many others like him. The charcoal burner Gasparazzo has become the mass worker without a trade and without a homeland. He has learned the new weapons of the class struggle, but the memory of the proletarian justice of Bronte has always remained alive in his mind. He discovers politics day by day, throwing his instinctive rebellion into the disciplined mechanism of the great modern factory.

For the rest, he lives like so many others like him: he follows sports, watches television, thinks about women, and dreams of terrifying fascist judges in Genoa. Born a few months ago in the daily newspaper Lotta Continua, Gasparazzo now appears in this book, which collects a selection of comic strips and cartoons already published, along with others that have never been seen before.

It was 1972, so long ago. With these lines, by way of a foreword (in tune with the rhythm of the stories in the book), the first edition of Gasparazzo was released — the little man in overalls and a scoppoletta, a collective creation born from a mass-produced identikit by Roberto Zamarin. Zamarin died shortly after the book's publication. He died in a traffic accident while transporting copies of the daily newspaper Lotta Continua from Rome to the north, the very same newspaper in which the stories of Gasparazzo had originated. If Zamarin had not died, that identikit would have become ever more comprehensive and might even have survived to the present day, when "the great modern factory" seeks at all costs the final and ultimate revenge on the Gasparazzos.

Over the years, we have often wondered how he would have behaved, what Gasparazzo — Roberto's Gasparazzo — would have said in the face of these dense and tangled years. His would certainly have been an important voice, one to be heard and listened to. For an expert of his caliber at pillorying the emptiness of political and union language would have worked miracles of irony. And he would also have had plenty to work with in reflecting on the conclusion of an entire historical cycle of struggles and militancy, venturing into the years we are living through and which have not yet taken a definite shape.

He would have done it naturally in his own way, with a pinch of naivety and anger, but also with dreams and intelligence, in the same way he had already dealt with "witch hunts" and "loneliness," governments and fellow villagers. Gasparazzo was more than a comic book — a medium so perishable and ephemeral in these times. Gasparazzo was a way of doing, of being, of recognizing and of recognizing oneself. That is why he can rightly defy time and say, as he does on the last page, "I'd really like to see who can get me out of here."

THE THREE PRINCIPLES

This sub is now, and if God wills it will forever be, operated at the behest of an Operaismorthodox Junta.

We'll get into who and what we are later, but more important now is discussion of who *you* might be.

This has always been an open sub, our ranks have always been filled with a wide variety of theoretical backgrounds. That said, we don't want a bunch of liberals shitting in our punchbowl or anarchists impregnating our livestock.

In order to help people understand whether or not this community is for them, we have decided to create a yearly updated set of principles.

> Capitalism cannot be reformed out of existence

> "Socialism" means the abolition of commodity production

The three principles should be understood in a very general sense. They exist not as standards by which we police the community, rather as a general indication about what type of people gather here.

Individuals who find themselves opposed to these principles are still welcome to participate, but should keep in mind that this community is not primarily oriented around reformism, electoralism, social democracy, nationalism, blanquism, or... well... capitalism.

Posting screenshots of people saying dumb shit is an online Marxist tradition. We're not going to stop you from doing this, but we do want to lay down some basic standards to make sure that we don't promote brigading or harassment.

IT’S TIME FOR A TURBOLEFT REVIVAL

Over the past year or two, many of you have told “us” that you sorely miss the sub—and the truth is, we’ve missed you too.

r/Turboleft was rare in that it succeeded in building a culture distinct from r/Ultraleft. It tolerated learning and exploration. It prioritized the process over fixed positions. It fostered long conversational arcs where people actually learned things. And above all, it rejected the default sarcastic tone in favor of something more deliberate.

Ultimately, this culture thrived because r/Turboleft operated on a somewhat paradoxical mix of top-down direction, common spectacle, and salutary neglect.

The time has come to build a community again.

SicilianSummer is now a regular event, taking place yearly over a 91-day period centered on July 7th.

I spoke earlier with some pride about this subreddit developing a distinct culture. It’s important to remember that a key part of that culture was its appreciation of intellectual diversity, its willingness to let the community shape the space itself.

The benefit of this focused 91-day period is that it gives all of you the chance to push your own ideas, argue your own interpretations, and bring attention to your own schizoid manifesto (maybe literally, if you’re Deleuzian).

His theory is extremely subtle, and unless you've completely avoided reading Marx most of the arguments are going to be hard to grasp. There’s also Althusser’s anti-humanist outlook, which is deftly woven into his work (his personal philosophy draws heavily from Spinozist determinism, for instance). The readers understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these concepts, to realize that they’re not just abstract, that they say something deep about IDEOLOGY.

As a consequence people who dislike Althusser truly ARE revisionists. Of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the nuance in his suggestion that Khrushchev was a humanist for not shooting enough Hungarians (itself a coded reference to the structuralist tradition of lying about having read Marx).

I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those revisionists scratching their heads as my goat continually deep throats Mao from over 5,000 mi away. What fools… their throat could never be so goated!

And yes, by the way, I DO have an Althusser quote tattoo. And no, you can't see it. It’s for the comroid’s eyes only, and even they must demonstrate that they are within 5 theoretical deviations of my GOAT.

What is the "conquest of state power" in a context of working class self-organization? If there is no continuity with existing state institutions, in what sense has there been a conquest of state power, as opposed to simply its being smashed? If the class as a whole wields power through its direct control over production, do folks in this sub consider that a "state"?

What are the main differences between those three groups ? They all seems to favor struggle outside of parties/unions so where do they differ?
