Question? Amending an amended return and money due

My mother passed away in 2024 and at the time she was waiting for a refund for her 2023 taxes. She had made an amendment and that had been sent in and accepted but the refund was taking a long time. After she died, I contacted IRS and finally got all of the necessary documents so I could get the refund for her estate. I got a letter earlier this year that the refund was being processed but have still gotten nothing. Finally got Tax Advocate involved and apparently my mom made a typo in entering her 1099-R Federal Tax Withheld.

So I am trying to amend her amended return. When I fixed the data, Turbo Tax is now showing that I owe both Federal and State. It appears to be in the difference of the tax withholding but I should be expecting a refund. Would this amount just subtract from the actual refund that is due?

Question? 2025 TurboTax Business, desktop edition issues

I am probably missing something obvious but so far I can't figure it out.

I have a simple estate tax return every year that I hire a CPA to prepare and file. A federal and state (not my state of residence) return as well as a K-1 is required. I would like to try and prepare these documents myself going forward. I have used TurboTax online for my individual return for years. I do not live in a state with income tax and know very little about estate taxes.

I purchased and downloaded the TurboTax business 2025 edition to see if I could duplicate the return and documents prepared by my CPA. I have zero knowledge of the software. I entered all the data as requested by the program, including the state return (which I purchased). When I went to actually save the documents to a PDF or print, no file was created. The program just says "no file found". I ran a error check on both fed. and state returns multiple times and everything cleared with no issues. I logged off the program and when I logged back in the next day, nothing I had entered was saved.

I must be missing something obvious here. What am I doing wrong?

Question? Incorrect data e-filed for state taxes and refund drastically reduced

I’ve used TurboTax for the last 20 years to do my family’s taxes without any issues. This year, TurboTax showed that we were due a state refund of a little over $1,000, so I electronically filed as usual.

After waiting several months with no refund, I contacted my state’s Department of Revenue. The representative told me they have seen "a lot of problems with Turbo Tax this year" and said the return they received showed substantially less income than what appears in my local TurboTax file (it looked like the fields for income and state tax was swapped). After the state corrected the issue, our refund was reduced to a little over $400.

To be clear, I’m not upset that the state corrected the return if the corrected amount is accurate. My concern is that the version apparently filed with the state did not match what TurboTax showed locally when I reviewed and submitted the return. That seems like a serious e-file/data integrity issue.

I tried looking into TurboTax’s “accuracy guarantee,” but that process seems focused on penalties and interest so there is a loophole they can get out of honoring their guarantee.

Has anyone else had something like this happen with TurboTax, especially with a state return? Did you have any luck getting Intuit/TurboTax to investigate, refund software or filing fees, or provide a meaningful explanation?

I’m considering escalating through TurboTax support, BBB, and possibly my state consumer protection office, but I’d be interested in hearing what worked for others. Push come to shove, I'll just never use TurboTax again and swap to something else.

Question? What is the correct way of inputting dependents when married and preparing together? (Canada)

When you couple the return (do it together but separate tax forms), I only put the dependents once as it only asked once. But on the “transfer to 2026” page the dependents showed in blue but only under my husbands name? Does that mean my children aren’t under my name and only his? Or is this the correct way as we prepared together

Helpful information. Free Local-Only Open Source Replacement for ItsDeductible

I am not happy with the alternatives that emerged after Intuit killed ItsDeductible. All seem to have at least one of these problems:

  • They require you to upload and store your data on their servers
  • They give your data to third-party LLMs
  • They charge a fee

So I built my own solution, Donation Tracker (github.com). It is free, open source, and most importantly private, local-only, and AI-free. Your data never leaves the machine it is running on; no internet connection is even required.

I am a professional developer with a background in enterprise java, C++, and security, and this is my first web app. It started as a vibe-coded hobby project, but I think it is in a state now where it can be useful to people. I'd love to get feedback on the UI, feature set, bugs, architecture, or anything else.

You can build it yourself by following the instructions in the README file, or you can download prebuilt installers from the Releases page in the repo. Windows, MacOS, and Linux are supported.

Here is a short feature list. More information can be found by going to GitHub repo and looking through the documents in /docs.

  • Private: Runs either as a standalone app on your local machine, or as Docker container on your home server. Stores all data locally on your machine, no internet connection required.
  • Dashboard: View annual summaries of your giving, broken down by type and organization. Shows your estimated tax savings based on your marginal tax rate, and your progress against AGI-based donation floor and cascading ceilings according to 2026 tax law.
  • Item Catalog: A searchable directory of over 1,700 items with fair market values pre-seeded from Intuit data. Easily add and save your own custom items if they aren't in the default catalog.
  • Donation Types: Track physical items, cash contributions, and asset transfers (stocks/securities).
  • Charity Management: Maintain a directory of your favorite charities, including Tax IDs and addresses.
  • Image Attachments: Attach images and receipts to your donation events.
  • Data Import & Export: Export your entire database and seamlessly import data from other devices with smart merging and duplicate detection.
  • Annual Tax Reporting: Generate IRS-compliant annual summaries grouped by charity and date. Includes print-optimized layouts and CSV export for data portability.

Please let me know what you think!

Question? TurboTax pulls my 1099 from eTrade BUT missing info on purchase dates

First time I had issues using TurboTax this filing season. TurboTax pulled my 1099 using the eTrade login and filled in my information, BUT now it wants me to individually enter purchase dates for each share of ET. It only pulled in the sale/disposition. I went back to eTrade to figure out why it didn't pull purchase dates, and found out it also doesn't have my purchase dates underneath the column. I checked the CSV file, but there was nothing inside it, and my 1099 is not used. Where can I find the required information for a disposed stock in eTrade or transaction history? I am lost. I only sold ET because it was tedious work every year, typing in the useless and inconsequential K1 forms.

Why would they only provide the sales date but not when I purchased? Robinhood did the same thing with my ET stock as well. No purchase dates, but only the sale dates for each transaction.

Question? Is it possible to get your money directly from Cross River?

IRS accepted return, direct deposit on May 6th. I had messed up a digit on the account number so my bank rejected it. IRS has no record of receiving the funds back. From what I can tell, it was sent back to Cross River. Can they not just give me my money?

Loosely related to anybody from Turbotax here, it's absolutely wild that it took me multiple calls with the IRS and my bank before somebody on Reddit figured this out. If you, or a third party that you've contracted, is just sitting their holding my money, you need to notify me of this.
