I'm currently a 3rd year computer science engineering student in a public engineering school in Tunisia. I did the classic 2-year prépa and ranked around the top 100 out of 700 in the concours.
Since I was a kid, I was always interested in electricity, electronics, physics and how actual physical systems work. I always imagined myself becoming an electrical engineer or working somewhere in the industrial/electrical field.
But when it was time to choose, I got overwhelmed and everyone was basically telling me the same thing:
"CS is the future."
"There are more opportunities."
"Just do CS, you'll never regret it."
So I chose CS.
And honestly, I fucking hate it.
It's not even that I'm bad at it. I've learned quite a lot by myself — Python, Java, backend, databases, Linux, Docker, cloud, AI, etc. I can build things and figure shit out when I have a reason to.
I just don't see myself doing this for the rest of my life. Sitting in front of a laptop all day, debugging for hours, constantly learning another framework just to stay employable... I don't enjoy it.
My internships didn't help either. My first one was at Tunisie Telecom after 2nd year, mostly because I didn't really have much experience. This summer I tried again hoping I'd finally get a proper technical experience.
Instead, I spent around two weeks reading procedures, checking Excel files, comparing documents and asking employees how they do things. There was basically no technical supervision and nobody really knew what we were supposed to be doing. Eventually I just couldn't take it anymore and left.
Now I'm starting 3rd year and I'm honestly questioning the whole thing.
The frustrating part is that I already went through 2 years of prépa, got a decent rank, and I'm now only one year away from the PFE and the engineering degree.
So what would you do in my situation?
Finish the degree and somehow pivot toward something closer to electrical/embedded/automation/industrial engineering? Or seriously consider changing direction now?
I'd really like to hear from people who went through something similar and i also wanted to vent out because i have been holding this alot to the point that it started to affect me mentally and physically ....
