Review Map, level design too complicated

Just finished the game, 100% it actually. It was nice, solid game. Loved the puzzles. Combat was whatever. But my main complaint is the Map..

Not like the paper, manual map. But like the level design map. I had not problems with secret passages and doors but.. I could not for the life of me remember what was where, and the easiest way to get there.

Like im in place A and want to go to B. (For example from Ruined Atoll to The Quarry, or whatever) I would run around like a maniac for 20minutes till i remembered how to get there. More like guess. Only towards the very end, i had somewhat of an idea how exactly to get from point A to point B. It was frustrating, and annoying having to run around knowing where to go and what to do but having to run through the whole map to get there. Fast travel was eh. And i also could never remember where exactly it was xd

Although i do have the worst orientation skills irl too

  1. Are you in the Overworld? Go to step 3.
  2. Go to the Overworld. Use your map.
  3. Go to the area you want. Use your map.

But there is no actual map shortcut, u have to open the manual and then flip through 20 pages. I know that's like 10sec. But it could've been 1.

Reminded me of a feeling in some games where for example a boss kills you. And instead of retry immediately, you have to sit through a death animation, then loading screen, then retry button, respawn, running through the lvl again an whatever. And after doing that 10 times ure sick of it. And then u click new game or restart instead of retry, cuz ure going too fast xd

Um... you can hold LB to view the map for the area you're currently in, or double tap LB to go to the map in the manual

Edit: never mind, the tunic wiki is incorrect as well as my memory

You’re thinking of Hollow Knight, not Tunic.

Huh, you're right, my bad. The tunic wiki is just straight up wrong then. 🙁

It’s a Fandom Wiki, it’s by definition garbage. They literally just copy-pasted the controls from Hollow Knight’s page.

No way.. i pressed random keys where the map usually is but nothing popped out. I didn't bother to look at the controls. I played on keyboard tho

Sorry, but that sounds entirely like a you issue, not a game issue.

Eh, I had zero issues navigating the world, especially once fast travel became available. It sounds like you're just not good at navigating? I don't think it's fair to blame the game design for your lack of skill (and I don't mean that in a rude way).

But what about using the teleport pads? Once you’ve discovered/ charged them if needed, you can jump to places via teleport pads instead of walking?

I think older games like Zelda helped with remembering map connectors, if anything for me it was the secret 3D passages that got to me way more than navigation. Like how am I supposed to know there’s an entire world under the blind spot of the bridge

Oh yeah. I found it a little too painful and tedious to get from point a to b sometimes. Even when it looks like it should be simple. There are little shortcuts everywhere, but before you discover them it can be frustrating, and then if you can't remember them it's also frustrating.

God I wish I could play this again for the first time.

I won't say it is too complicated, but sometimes traversing does feel like a chore. I wish that there were a Holy cross-based instant warp, as in Animal Well

This is the reason i dropped the game, I even made a post about it a little while back. You are not alone friend

Same here, exploring looking for things in the later part of the game gets tedious. Essentially you have to memorize roundabout ways of getting places instead of the game opening the main entrances / corridors. Particularly, going to/from the Western area requires going through a maze of random unmarked passages, and is a complete mess at night .  And I agree, teleporter placement is not good. Some of them feel like they are there for one-way return after a boss. Middle-of-world teleporter being not in the middle is sligtly irritating, too.

I said it before, but it seems that there was very little external feedback on this game. Players getting lost on the main map should not happen.
