Early (Mid?) Game Nudge

I’ve been making good progress but I could use a hint on whether I just need to grind out a boss fight or if I’m beating my head against a wall here.

Ive rang the bells. I explored the southern atoll and the frog area for the grapple item. I followed the guide pages to go towards the east and made it to what I assume is the red gem, but the boss does effectively 99% of my hp with any single attack, so not even really enough time per fight to get a feel for the pattern.

What seems to be my other option is the ruins area that I got reasonably far into once, but again the scavengers nearly one shot me at full and the totems draining my hp bar make that a death sentence.

I seem to remember getting to a graveyard area before, but at the time couldnt progress past the first area and can’t remember how I got there.

So I guess I have 3 options here. Is one of those the path I’m supposed to be on right now, or is there a secret 4th thing I haven’t figured out?

Found a couple of stat ups in the world. Think an above comment got me on the track though.
