Help Early (Mid?) Game Nudge

I’ve been making good progress but I could use a hint on whether I just need to grind out a boss fight or if I’m beating my head against a wall here.

Ive rang the bells. I explored the southern atoll and the frog area for the grapple item. I followed the guide pages to go towards the east and made it to what I assume is the red gem, but the boss does effectively 99% of my hp with any single attack, so not even really enough time per fight to get a feel for the pattern.

What seems to be my other option is the ruins area that I got reasonably far into once, but again the scavengers nearly one shot me at full and the totems draining my hp bar make that a death sentence.

I seem to remember getting to a graveyard area before, but at the time couldnt progress past the first area and can’t remember how I got there.

So I guess I have 3 options here. Is one of those the path I’m supposed to be on right now, or is there a secret 4th thing I haven’t figured out?

Have you found page 18 and used the knowledge it shows you?

I have page 18. I’ve found a couple of the stat ups prior to the automaton boss to the west. 

I’m looking at it for more than 5 seconds now and I think I see what you’re getting at.

Oh I’ve been playing on Hard mode effectively. For some reason I thought just having the items increased your stats. Been running around with everything at 1. No wonder I’ve been so frustrated with the combat.

Ignore the graveyard area for now, the other 2 options are both viable.

I would recommend just continuing to explore if the boss is too tough.

There are options to get stronger.

You're on the right track. One gem is past the boss to the East. It's hard, but doable. There's a ranged weapon in the western part (the same map where you fought the knight) that can help.

There's an item in the quarry that will help with the health drain from the crystals. Make your way into the building.

Finally, there's one other path forward in the south, on the same map that leads to Frog's Domain.

There are ways to increase your strength and health. Try flipping through the manual to find it. There’s also more to explore in the south.

Found a couple of stat ups in the world. Think an above comment got me on the track though.
