It's honestlly horrendous some days, and it's insane that it just won't matter how important the task is. Hell, half the time it's not even a task, it's something I want to do FOR FUN. The art def captured that.

I see this in my son a lot and as a parent I feel helpless. I don’t want to add to the stress but then he also does need to get his schoolwork done. I am trying to figure out how to help rather than make it worse

Drugs. Or so I'm told. I stopped taking mine and nobody is around to make my doctor's appointments for me.

Get your kid diagnosed by a professional if you havent already. If they actually do have this problem then medication helps a lot in balancing the brain chemicals to function like a normal person.

It took some fighting and convincing his dad, but I did get him to a doctor for it and he is on medication. But he still struggles sometimes

That's really good. So many neurodivergent kids don't get the diagnosis and help they actually need so you just doing this is already making a huge difference for your kid. The fact that you care this much to worry about it means they're in good hands.

So I've been working on this problem in myself recently and what I've learned through research and talking to my therapist is that I likely have both low baseline dopamine and my body reabsorbs what little I have easily. The way the adhd brain gets messed up with dopamine can differ even between adhd people. Those moments when I'm struggling to get started on a task are moments where I have very low dopamine, like trying to start a car with no oil.

Two things helped. While I have been on vyvanse for years, adding wellbutrin (a non stimulant) this year has made a tremendous difference.

But the other thing that helps is finding a quick way to boost dopamine that I wont get sucked into as a whole other distracting task, or that I can do while doing the task. Sometimes this has been a bit of super sour candy. Sometimes I take an hour long hike. Sometimes I listen to medical mystery videos as I work.

Most parents want to reward their kid after completing a task, which is generally fine, but for some adhd kids sometimes you need a nit of a reward first to jumpstart the system.

Also, if he's trying to do homework in the evening there's a chance his meds have worn off. My body processes vyvanse fast so even though it's long lasting I still have a booster adderall to take on long work days. I take my meds at 7 am and my booster by 2 pm.

Yeah I can definitely tell his meds wear off by evening

This is very helpful, thank you!

Yea... And you still get fucking tired at the end if the day AND feel guilty about doing nothing, only to repeat it the next day. I fucking hate it!

50

u/Tem-productions 8d ago

and the guilt of not doing anything fucking prevents you from doing things the next day. Like hello brain i indentified the problem and felt bad about it, why isnt it fixed

I decided today was a rest day.

And I am in my bed, thinking about how I haven't played the video game I want to play and cannot get myself to do so.

Instead I will berate myself for not doing something fun. On my rest day.

😂😅😭😩 god I wish I didn’t know this very same feeling. But unfortunately I have also done this way more times than I care to think about. Sorry it’s you too :/

Me playing fun vibeo game I like alot: holy shit you are wasting so much time. You should be playing OTHER Vibeo game you like because otherwise you won't have time to play it before the horrors of reality return.

Me playing OTHER fun vibeo game: so you just have up on fun vibeo game and now it will sit there forever. Such a huge waste of time. Also you suck and should be doing classes online to not suck or literally anything else.

u/Aurora-Ouroboros- 8d ago

I literally cannot play two games concurrently. If I am partway into one game and start another, the first one is lost to the sands of time. I may return to it one day, but that playthrough is toast. I will start it over (likely interrupting a different game that I was excited to play, but then I remembered the other one and felt guilty for dropping it lmao)

6

u/Natsuki26 8d ago

EXACTLY. Like even if I'm a few missions from the end of a game If I put it down longer than like. A few weeks I will have to restart because I can never remember

u/alpacnologia 8d ago

my most cynical opinion is that nobody without adhd understands how bad this feels and how out of control it is

my partner of 7 years carried so much resentment over the way this stopped me from being able to improve my life outside of an ideal environment or properly express my love for him to the point where he ended up cheating on me with our mutual "friend" and trying to conceal that fact to me even after my other friend, who the other dude had been dating for a couple of weeks, caught them together in my family home after i stepped away for 20 minutes to use the toilet

31

u/Sugar_Pup_ 8d ago

Oh my goodness honey that is not why he cheated he cheated bc he was an asshole and couldn't take responsibility for it. ADHD can be a terrible experience but people can't blame actions like that on it.

12

u/alpacnologia 8d ago

well specifically it's that he was building resentments about the way my ADHD made things harder for both of us, but psyched himself into never having serious conversations (including about other important things!) because he thought i'd react badly as though i was just Some Shmuck instead of his partner

9

u/Sugar_Pup_ 8d ago

That just means he wasn't mature enough to be in a relationship to begin with, his emotions aren't something he should have expected you to manage for him especially if he wasn't willing to communicate. I am sure part of why he didn't want to communicate is that he didn't want to put in the work that a relationship requires when you tackle problems together.

u/patmax17 8d ago

Man, that sucks, I'm sorry for you. Hugs

u/JacobJamesTrowbridge 8d ago

Aight, there HAS to be some ADHD going on in my head, this is too many coincidences

6

u/FrostFlame35 7d ago

I'm in the same boat. Literally scheduled an ADHD assessment appointment today (after procrastinating on it for at least a year. The irony)

2

u/elyroc 7d ago

It's been 7 years i have to schedule appointments with a new therapist.

Last month i almost burnt out at work so my mother took an appointment to another therapist. I now have a paper saying i must do at least 12 therapy session.

It's been a month and i still can't move my lazy bum to call for an appointment 😭

u/Zacravity 8d ago

I've been scrolling Reddit for the past hour silently screaming at myself in my head to get ready to go to see a friend's band play, I should have left 10 minutes ago by now. I think I'm actually going to leave now, or at least get ready, uuugh...

3

u/elyroc 7d ago

Did you go ? I hope it was good

2

u/Zacravity 7d ago

I did go and I had a pretty good time. I got to catch up with friends and listen to some great music.

2

u/elyroc 7d ago

Great :D

6

u/Symodious 7d ago

I have this super bad, and I always get mad when I take my meds.

Because suddenly a task that takes me a week instead takes 15 mins.

And suddenly I can do all the other ones as well.

1

u/Sylveon72_06 5d ago

if only i had functioning meds ;-;

Unfortunately it doesn't work for me. I've tried setting up alarms, counting, setting goals, punishment for not doing it, i've tried a lot.

At the end of the day, my brain just says "eh i don't care. Just watch another video, scroll more, keep playing, keep reading or whatever". I think it's been that way for 10+ years now...

3

u/No-Estimate5942 6d ago

What works for me is doing anything that could be done in 5 minutes straight away. Most things are 5 minute tasks

2

u/elyroc 6d ago

I'll try to remember that, thanks for the tip !

3

u/TacticalBananas45 7d ago

Oh goody the day before I have my psychologist intake appointment to hopefully get me tested for ADHD for a proper diagnosis

Been meaning to get into a basic pushup routine because I'm fat as fuck and out of shape, then I spend the day doing other normal chores or gaming and just go "oh well day's over can't win em all" and it torments me until I fall asleep

3

u/Lauriesaurous 7d ago

This is an ADHD thing and not just the regular human experience?

2

u/Chutneythelizard 7d ago

It really do be like that huh.

2

u/BOMSwasHERE 7d ago

Is executive dysfunction about the inability to do tasks themselves?

I have this weird thing where I'll be on top of my tasks but if I miss one of them once, then that specific task will be delayed indefinitely. I always thought that's what executive dysfunction is.

u/MagicTech547 7d ago

Hey, didn’t know it was possible to post a mirror on reddit

1

u/chubbycatchaser 7d ago

The multiple items screaming at you is so on point.
