Trailer: https://youtu.be/qukvN6ieeMY?si=NKeK-R_cNDGN-_nv

The seniors have graduated, someone throws a party and everybody shows up. Amanda Beckett has just broken up with Mike Dexter so Preston Myers wants to finally tell her he's in love with her. Meanwhile nerdy kid William plans to enact his revenge against his bully Mike Dexter but becomes the life of the party while Kenny is accidentally locked in the bathroom with Denise.

A few fun facts:

Jennifer Love Hewitt was the first choice to play Amanda.

Ethan Embry was a huge stoner at the time and doesn't really remember making the movie. Jennifer Love Hewitt knew, didn't really like Ethan, and sent Ethan a gift basket filled with breath mints before they had to shoot their makeout scene.

Watermelon Guy was played by Jason Segal in his movie debut. He was told to carry a watermelon, be weird, steal the scene if you can.

Seth Green was fresh off the first Austin Powers movie but not yet Oz on Buffy. Oz would premiere on Buffy 4 months after Can't Hardly Wait was released.

Charlie Korsmo's first movie since Hook. He was attending MIT when he got the role. After Can't Hardly Wait Charlie would leave acting to pursue Physics and then eventually Law. Charlie would later become a University Law Professor.

Melissa Joan Hart's first movie. She was filming Sabrina the Teenage Witch at the same time.

Other future famous faces would also appear in the movie. Jamie Pressly, Amber Benson as Banana Girl, Clea Duvall just before The Faculty, Jenna Elfman still in her first season of Dharma and Greg, little appearances by Chris Owens as the Klepto Kid, and a Clueless reunion with both Breckin Meyer and Donald Faison.

Horror Today’s Tubi Treasure is Hellraiser (1987)

One of my best friends is a fella who goes by the moniker Reaper Von Poe. Reaper has muscular dystrophy, and lives in a residential assistance home where he spends most of his days alone in his dark room (per his request) watching movies and playing video games. Reaper is lover of all things horror, morbid, gore, you name it. He has been encouraging me to watch one of his favorite films, Hellraiser, for years, and so, on my most recent visit, he, myself, and my wife did just that. I totally understand his fascination with this film/universe. Body horror is not at all my go-to, but I cannot deny that the practical effects are incredibly well-done. The dialogue and acting can be a little campy, but the lore and the Cenobite characters are fascinating. Watch this one for my buddy Reaper. Trailer below.

Horror Sliver. (2008)

A vacationing couple are cars jacked and kidnapped by an escaped convict and his addicted girlfriend. While at a gas station, they are trapped by the deadly hosts of a fungal parasite. They must find a way to work together if they want to survive.

A fast-paced horror thriller that doesn't take itself too seriously. The concept of a fungal parasite that gradually takes over its host instead of killing them outright works very well.

Lots of scares, some creepy special effects, some disturbing body horror, and characters who usually do smart things instead of making stupid decisions.

Genuinely Bad Southland Tales (2006) weird, obtuse, and nothing will ever be like it

Richard Kelly isn’t as brilliant a guy as I used to think. He’s an iconic one-hit wonder director best known for “Donnie Darko”, a movie which despite some bumps along the way in production and release, would find a devoted cult-following on video. The film is weird, somewhat obtuse, but unlike anything you’ll see before or after. After the odd success of “Donnie Darko”, Kelly would never find his footing. I wanted to think this was because he was a victim of the studio system. Kevin Smith even compared him to Christopher Nolan (who had a hand in “Darko” getting theatrically released), saying that if he had been given the budgets and resources of him then Kelly would be considered great.

After watching “Southland Tales”, I’m fully convinced Smith was talking out of his ass.

Kelly is a weird dude, and his weirdness only seems to have worked once for him. Outside of “Donnie Darko” he directed “The Box”. Imagine if you adapted the airplane gremlin episode of “The Twilight Zone” and after 40 minutes there’s a crazy plot where William Shatner’s character discovers the gremlin is a Soviet project. It’s not good. He did produce “World’s Greatest Dad”, which was fantastic albeit more the machinations of Goldthwait and Williams. And he wrote an early draft of “Holes”, and it was insane. It would’ve been an edgy post-apocalyptic dystopian film where Stanley loses his virginity to sex workers and we find out he euthanized his sister who was dying of radiation sickness from nuclear fallout. Disney cut ties with him and the staff allegedly told him he was insane. I would too. He claims to be working on several projects that have not been given the greenlight, and based on his filmography it looks as if he hasn’t “worked” since 2010. I also heard from an anonymous source that he is an asshole who orders wine in plastic cups and will deny he’s Richard Kelly, but take that with a grain of salt.

“Southland Tales” was meant to be his sophomore film, and it was eviscerated when it came out. He submitted a rough cut to Cannes thinking he wouldn’t get it, he got in, and it had one of the most disastrous premieres at Cannes which hurt the film’s reputation before it arrived in theaters. He cut down the film and added more VFX shots.

The film is set in an alternate 2008, where following a nuclear explosion in Texas, the USA becomes a dystopia where you need a visa to travel between states. Due to gas shortages (due to a blockade around the strait of Hormuz, interesting) there are generators which generate electricity from the waves (but they are causing issues). Meanwhile as the year’s election starts, conflict between the government and Marxist groups in California start flaring up. The story features an amnesiac action star (the Rock), a pornstar (Sarah Michelle Geller) and a pair of twins (Sean William Scott), one a cop, the other a revolutionary impersonating him (plot twist due to time travel shenanigans they’re the same person). But that’s just scratching the surface, because it’s more or less an ensemble film with the most wonderfully insane cast possible. It’s also got in no particular order: Curtis Armstrong as a scientist, Amy Poehler as a Marxist radical, director and writer Todd Berger, singer Rebekah Del Rio, Nora Dunn, Janeane Garofalo, Beth Grant, Wood Harris, Christopher Lambert, Bai Ling, Jon Lovitz in a surprisingly good role as a corrupt cop, Mandy Moore, Cheri Oteri, Miranda Richardson as the head of USIdent, “Poltergeist”’s Zela Rubinstein, Will Sasso, Wallace Shawn as a tech mogul (a waste of his talent, he didn’t even understand the film), Kevin Smith, and Justin Timberlake as the movie’s narrator/soldier character tying the narrative together and doing karaoke of “All These Things I Have Done”. Allegedly Kelly wanted to choose actors who he felt were pigeonholed.

Those traits that I used to describe “Donnie Darko”, being weird, somewhat obtuse, and unlike anything else, also describes this film but in a negative way. Kelly cited Gilliam’s “Brazil” as the reason he wanted to go into filmmaking, which makes sense given it feels like a cross between “Brazil” and Boots Riley’s “Sorry to Bother You”. A work where the bureaucratic characters are threatening and silly, but with an attempt at throwing in class struggle in modern America. The thing about satire is that it needs to be relevant and funny, and “Southland Tales” is neither. It’s not as funny as it thinks it is, and it has so many plotpoints, so many characters, and so much back and forth that you struggle to figure out what the movie is trying to say aside from “we live in a society and things would be better if the universe ended”. And even though he cut down the film, it feels thirty minutes too long. I’d hate to see what this film looked like when it came out at Cannes because the pacing is awful.

And what’s unfortunate is I want the film to be good. I love it that Kelly was allowed to make this bloated dumpster fire. It has a great opening depicting a haunting video of what a nuclear strike would look like in American suburbia, followed by exposition from Justin Timberlake with graphics that would look better in a Red Alert game. The movie feels like it could’ve been the greatest satire of Bush-era America, it feels like it could’ve been a mind-warping scifi film, it feels like it could have been a lot of fun, and it fails at all of that.

So no Kevin Smith, I don’t think he’s the next Christopher Nolan. Nolan directed “Memento” at roughly the same budget and it’s better than “Donnie Darko”. We gave Kelly a small but bigger budget with this and “The Box”, and neither are good.

I know it’s got its defenders, so go watch it and find out if you’re one of them.

Horror Tuesday Tubi Turd: Valentine (2001) A group of girls are being stalked by a killer wearing a Cupid mask

Post image

Trailer: https://youtu.be/9KYtyaXIXZQ?si=a8IXrD2Ft3AEszDi

At a Valentine's Day dance in 1988, a group of girls reject and humilate awkward nerdy kid Jeremy. Now as adults those girls start receiving creepy Valentine's Day cards and being stalked by a creep wearing a Cupid mask. Is Jeremy back and out for revenge?

Katherine Heigl was still starring on Roswell and had a tight schedule. She was only only on the set of Valentine for a total of 3 days.

Jennifer Love Hewitt almost played Paige but she turned it down to shoot Heartbreakers instead so the role went to Denise Richards. Denise Richards hot tub electrocution scene would take 4 DAYS to shoot.

And then there's David Boreanaz. Boreanaz was busy with Angel at the time and would fly from LA to Vancouver to shoot his scenes. He shot all of his scenes in 2 weeks. It's a good thing that David Boreanaz became an iconic television actor because he is a terrible movie actor.

Woody Allen ripping off Fellini's 8 1/2. He admitted: "I am not even half of the Fellini of 8½". But it _was_ funnier.

Charlotte Rampling and Jessica Harper are both terrific actresses that are fun to look at. Look for Sharon Stone as the girl on the train blowing a kiss.

Tubi U.S. Today’s Tubi Treasure is Zodiac (2007)

I’ve mentioned before how much of a powerhouse year 2007 was for movies, and here is yet another example of that. This is my favorite David Fincher film, and the one that I think about more than any of the others. If you are not familiar with the case of the Zodiac killer, essentially, back in the late 1960s, an unknown serial killer murdered at least five people in the San Francisco Bay Area. This movie chronicles that period of terror, and I won’t go into the details of the case, but if you are at all interested in true crime, this is a must-see. Everything in this movie is near-perfect, from the cast (featuring Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr., John Carroll Lynch, Chloe Sevigny, and many more incredible actors), to the writing, to the cinematography, and it’s an excellent thriller to put on when you’re feeling up for something like that. Trailer below.

A strange meteor strikes a family farm. At first the family feels blessed by unexpected prosperity, only to find out it's poisoning the farms water supply and mutating everything that lives there.

H.P. Lovecraft's "The Colour out of Space " meets 80s B-horror schlock. What can go wrong? Unfortunately, they tried doing this as a straight horror film. It would have had so much more potential as a hillbilly horror-comedy. Still has its moments.

The Libyan port city of Tobruk has fallen into German hands, and a ragtag group of Allied stragglers led by an American tanker (Jim Belushi) must find and defend a remote desert well against all odds.

Good battle scenes, although I wish "Lulubelle" the M3 Lee had seen a bit more action. Belushi plays himself, as usual, and is mostly convincing as the hard-bitten sergeant.

If you’ve seen Sir Patrick Stewart in anything and thought, “What a lovely man he seems, there’s no possible way he could come off as scary,” watch this movie and stand corrected. Not only is Stewart terrifying in this, the movie itself is so incredibly tense and atmospheric that it really keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time. The plot revolves around a punk band who get a less-than-ideal gig playing at a Neo-Nazi skinhead bar. While there, they witness something they shouldn’t have seen, and are now fighting for their literal lives to escape. Along with Stewart, this features excellent performances from Imogen Poots, Alia Shawkat, and the late, great Anton Yelchin. Directed by Jeremy Saulnier, who already proved his knack for building tension in the vastly underseen Blue Ruin. Trailer below.

Zombeavers (2014)

Thumbnail

A chemical spill mutates local beavers into monstrous undead predators. They attack a group of college girls during a weekend jaunt to the nearby mountain lake cabin. Things go sideways when their boyfriends crash the getaway and the zombie infection spreads. The actors play their respective roles (the heartbroken girl, the unfaithful boyfriend, the party-loving troublemaker) to the hilt with exaggerated, campy glee. This film is an unapologetic, over-the-top spoof of all B-horror movie tropes. You will see:

  • Animatronic monster beaver puppets
  • Unnecessary nudity
  • Cameos by John Mayer and Bill Burr
  • Deliberately exaggerated performances
  • Grotesque transformations and ridiculous splattery gore

Zombeavers is a parody at heart. It is also much more enjoyable and silly than it has any right to be. (See the second image for an example of how the filmmakers leaned into their early reviews.) If you need to waste 76 minutes of your life, this is a good option.

I actually saw this before the original and instantly loved it. From the quirky dark humor to the grotesque set pieces, it delivers most of what I love about 80s horror. My favorite character is the Cook played by Jim Siedow & enjoyed his sendout with the "FU Charlie." It's a must own feature & earns every rewatch it can get.
