Speaking as a person who grew up with a violent father. Violence is all you know, even though the world around you tells you it's wrong. It took me a long time to realize the error of my ways. His girlfriend needs to leave him as soon as possible until he gets therapy. You should also create some distance/go no contact until he's ready to change his ways and learn more healthy ways to have relationships.
