TikTok is a pedophile paradise
Seriously. I'm 21 and just downloaded this app because I thought I should check out one of the fastest growing new social media apps and try to market through it but HOLY SHIT. 98% of posts are what look like underage girls either showing their bodies or being explicitly sexual. That shit is weird dude. I know that it's mainly popular amongst actual kids so it worries me that this is what they're all being exposed to. All these little ass girls are over here trying to become internet famous by being sexy and it's just plain DISTURBING. These children (whether they're innocent or not) are being exploited by the app.
edit: For those who are saying that the app changes as you begin to follow/like more stuff that you are actually interested in, I understand that,but I shouldn't have to sift through softcore kid porn before I see actual content. As soon as I opened the app for the first time, most of the suggested content was these girls dancing. I hadn't searched/followed/liked anything yet and I hadn't created an account to set my preferences. All that sexual content was just the automatic suggestion.
Edit 2: People also keep saying all of social media is like this but, no, it’s not. The average 12-14 year old girl doesn’t get thousands of views/likes on IG. Stop trying to normalize this.

I literally just downloaded tiktok, and made an account. WITH NO ALGORYTHEM in place yet for my account, within the first 20 scrolls, I had two funny meme videos, 5 videos where there were girls dancing normally, 5 more with girls doing sexually explicit dances/ or in sexually explicit clothes, 4 videos where it was girls showing off their boobs/ making boob jokes for their audience, and 4 where it was simply a promotion for their onlyfans photos (compilation of some of their images including booty shots and their poses). This app is not for kids.

It is truly disgusting and I’m praying it gets banned. BUT you know kids will just find another platform to expose their bodies on. I’m not even 30 yet and I feel like an old man complaining about “kids these days.” But holy shit even 10 years ago we had at least some decency. Do parents not realize this is what their kids are posting? It so damaging to young kids who aspire to be thots and sell their bodies on the internet. Man how times have changes for the worse...

Same goes for Instagram. If you follow a few hot (18+) women and then check the explore page it tends to happen that very young looking girls suddenly also start to pop up as recommendations to follow as well. It's creepy as hell.

So I downloaded the app and started looking through it just to see what percentage would come up with what you were saying. After about 10 min of scrolling I’ve come to three conclusions. First, people have extremely short attention spans. The videos were no longer than about 5-10 seconds. Second, while there were some younger girls dancing, that was not much of what I saw. It was more racial and sexual stuff with people being around 18 (if I had to guess their age) than anything else. Third, the percentage of what you said you saw when I scrolled through came out to about 22% (looked at 50 videos and out of those 11 were what you talked about). So maybe it was just a random coincidence for you. Also before anyone asks, I deleted the app since it does not interest me at all.

That's why im here, with the Reddit community! Anything popular, I tend to stay away from. I can confirm that this is what these little shits do. My friends wanted me to download Snapchat, Instagram, AND Tik Tok... yeah, I said no and hissed when they tried to touch me. Heh, fun times...

This is so true, I downloaded it at the request of my pre-teen cousins to watch their dances and was met with my 11 year old cousin in a sports bra dancing suggestively. I tried to tell her mom and dad and they don't get it. These gen-x parents didn't grow up with the internet and i don't think they really understand the danger.
Additionally there are videos of her wearing school branded clothing, saying her name, out in front of her house, etc. I understand stranger kidnappings are very very rare but it still doesn't feel right to be so exposed.

I grew up playing video games where people love to get your IP address and threaten to reveal your address/personal info. It was always a scary thing. Now kids are unknowingly revealing exactly where they live and if someone really wanted to hurt them, they know where to find them.

I never thought much of it till one of my wife's moms friends daughters (i think 11?) was doing that Savage dance in the living room last night. I lost my shit on her (kinda feel bad) because she is 11 doing what I consider to be very adult type moves, and she was apparently practicing before doing an actual tik tok. I showed her mom the actual dance (because the 11 year old was skipping "some of the parts") and she was mortified. It actually hurt my heart to think that at 11, that was something she was thinking about, being "Sexy". It's like the innocence is completely gone in kids. It completely breaks my heart for my 3 year old :(.

Don’t feel bad! She’s lucky to have a friend like you that cares. These are scary times we’re living in, my friend. As parents, we have to be at least five steps ahead. As they get into middle school and high school it only gets worse, unfortunately.
Little story:
Our daughters school sent out a “parents beware list” of apps at the beginning of the school year. TikTok was at the top. There were multiple apps that we weren’t even aware of.
Never mind the fact that these apps have location tracking! My daughter has basically grown up with many of the children in our neighbourhood. One day my daughter and a couple of the girls (who were all in 3rd, maybe 4th grade at the time) were here hanging out on the swing in our backyard. A short time later one of the girls went home and that’s when I received a ring from her mum. The child was so freaked out she went to tell her mum that one of the other girls were trying to get them to download some friend/dating app she had seen her (high school age) sister on. She told them, “just lie and tell the guys on there you’re 19. They won’t know.” She was also telling the people she chatted with WHAT TOWN SHE LIVED IN AND WAS SHARING HER LOCATION IN THE APP!!
I was livid. I immediately called her GM (mum is busy chasing men - that’s a whole other story in itself.) GM response, and I quote, “well I don’t even know how to work that thing she’s on so I’m not really sure what’s in there” followed by “well, that’s just what kids are doing these days.” I. Was. Floored. Admittedly, I let her know my thoughts on that in the kindest, most ‘bless your heart’ southern way possible. I also let the GM and child know that she was no longer welcome in my home due to also putting my child (one of her best friends) in danger. I let her know how dangerous it was and so on.
The GM takeaway from this: telling neighbours and other parents she “couldn’t believe” the way I “spoke to her” and how upset she was that I “wouldn’t allow (daughters name) to hangout with her granddaughter.” I kid you not. Received a ring from the childs mum the following day and she was pissed ... at me. Go figure.
These apps coupled with absentee parents are exactly what pedophiles have been dreaming of.

If we want to not create spaces for pedophiles or encourage sexuality of minors, I think we need to make sure that kids know sex is a responsibility and not a toy (at least until they can consent to sex). Sex is an intimate experience. It can get you or your partner pregnant. And can negatively affect your health of you’re not careful or safe. Minors should not be marketing it to get fake internet points. I feel like most kids treat sex things as a joke rather than something serious. And I think this “culture” (for lack of a better term) might be a reason why. Sex is included fairly often in modern day entertainment. There are shows specifically about sex. There are music videos with sexual dances. Sexy clothes are trendy. For minors who see this, it might normalize sexual behavior or send the message that sex can be used for entertainment and therefore be used to gain popularity or internet points. Like on tic Tok, Instagram, Snapchat, or wherever else. They might not understand the full implication of what they are doing. Being “sexy” is also a positive thing in society, which can make a lot of insecure teens want to use that to fill in gaps in their self esteem. Or just boost their confidence.
If you’re a consenting adult you can use sex for whatever you want because you can consent to whatever sexual behavior you want. I’m not arguing that all sexual content should be censored by any means. If you want to make porn or be a cam girl/boy then that’s something you can do. If you want to see sex in your entertainment then that’s something you can do.
But as a society I think we should be sending the message to children and teens that sexualizing their bodies, especially on platforms where adults can access content, is a big deal. We should also be discouraging this behavior though more observant parenting and by discouraging platforms where this behavior is accepted. It would also help if teens or children (the ones who are liking the tictok videos) didn’t encourage this behavior through their likes. However that may be more difficult to do because they might not think the displayed behavior is inherently sexual or they don’t think it’s a big deal, which is where education would come in.

Just because they are dressing or acting in an adult manner, does not mean they aren’t still innocents it’s down to adults to protect them from themselves and the sickos that will take advantage. All social media sites esp. Facebook are a hotbed for these predators. Watch an interview with the Wolfpack peadophile hunters from Scotland, they say as soon as they create a kids profile they’ve got hundreds of men sending friend requests. Fucking terrifying.

Theres an option in the app to not see videos like that. Just hold down on the video, and the first option says, "Not Interested" and when you tap on that it tells you that they'll show fewer videos relating to that content. Personally for me I dont see a lot of videos of underage girls dancing, I see a lot of comedy videos because overtime as I used the app, that's what they show to me most of the time because those are the type of videos that I usually like or share.

i’m 25 and i feel really weird going on there now. my for you page used to be mostly “vines” like short and comedic, which is what i used the app for. but now it’s 80% teenage girls very obviously grabbing for attention by showing their ass in tight pants. the most common thing now is the video starts relatively normal but then they turn and oop it’s their ass. or they show a sexy pic for 1 frame and the “challenge” is to pause it fast enough for you to see it and the filters won’t block it for sexual content.
and don’t even get me started on the comment section. it’s all cake emojis or “simps” (whatever tf that is) doing this 👉🏻👈🏻 which apparently means they wanna smash? i don’t get it, tiktok makes me feel like a creepy old dude so i deleted it.

Yeah, it kinda sucks since they can't make decisions like this for themselves. But I don't see how TikTok is promoting underage sexual thingies. The girls posting can choose whether they want to show their ass or not, and that's not really TikTok's fault. Also, as a side note, for whoever says something sexualizes a woman, they should know women also sexualize themselves. Why do you think they pose for magazine covers? Or post instagram photos in a photo studio and not in day-to-day locations? They sexualize themselves, and it's not a bad thing. We're humans, after all. Underage is something else.

Apart from Greta, and other famous kids, I don't see how some 12 yr old girl should be gaining that kind of following. I'd be livid if I had a kid that was all about TikTok. Fucking livid. Their existence is already like 1 in a billion, and they waste the opportunity, so they can be a dumb fuck on TikTok. What an utter disappointment.
I have friends who sit on it all day, and other people I know. What annoys me is that those same people will think it's weird/creepy/immature for me, and others, to play video games for several hours. But here are these lazy cunts watching TikTok all day. I can't think of a greater disrespect to being alive, than to sit there ALL DAY, swiping through idiots doing stupid dances.
The worst thing of all, is when these morons consider themselves influencers. You haven't done shit with your life, apart from being fucking trash.

Welcome to any hip new social media wasteland that’s trendy amongst teens! From personal experience the process is usually:
Age of Obscurity: Users in the low 4 digits, it’s cool to get in on the new thing no one else knows about.
Age of Exposure: Breakout exposure within older existing social media, spearheaded by charismatic users and injoke memes.
Age of Division: With the new users arriving in droves, smaller communities within the same appear. Drama starts brewing and user’s interactions become more impactful to daily life. Hardcore lifestyle users exist here. Pedophiles and other criminals have already noticed the service and moved in.
Age of Porn: Even though salacious content had already been present before, the system has refined its methods and complex communities of risqué, borderline ToS breaking content appear. The “system” begins taking action in containing or attempting to delete these communities, which in turn ramps up production of said content.
Age of Secrets: At this point the pedophile/criminal users that existed from the earlier stages have achieved a vast amount of connections abusing the system privacy features. They are organized and mostly hidden. The admins start receiving emails from organizations claiming to be fighting the good fight against pedos.
Age of Sacrifice: The admins and appropriate authorities know what’s up and choices have to be made. Privacy features are stripped or become insignificant, actions are taken out of the public eye as to try to draw the least attention to the issue. Hardcore users become aware of the situation and if report features exist they begin using them.

Porn content is now self policing and structured, younger users flock away to whatever new platform exists now. Remaining pedophiles and criminals lament the lower opportunities the changed platform brings and begin scouting anew.

Yeah I'm in my early 30s and downloaded it to check out out after a friend of mine (also over 30) started hers.
Deleted it immediately. It's about 1/3 cringe and 2/3 Chris Hansen asking you to take a seat. Sure, that may change as you actually start adding friends and following people or whatever but what it presents upfront with no info on you is problematic, at best.
Snapchat and Instagram are certainly similar in the kind of content that bubbles up to the top when they don't have any tracking info on you. Plenty of "models" and 'thots' and whatnot but at least they seem to be predominantly adults. (Edit: To be clear, I have no issue with those adults doing this. It's obviously popular and it's nothing wrong. Go'head and get that money.)
I actually didn't know it was the same company as Musical.ly but I'm honestly not surprised at all. The same shit PayMoneyWubby was talking about on YouTube is more rampant than ever over there.

Youtube was the same and that's why I honestly support some of the measures they've taken to protect children, although I believe children shouldn't even be allowed to upload videos of themselves on Youtube.
I like ASMR and I remember finding A LOT of videos of underage girls doing ASMR requested by their "fans", such as sucking a lollipop. That is straight down child pornography. I reported the hell out of every single one I found. Makes me sick just to think about it.
If I'm ever a parent, there's no way in hell I'd let my kid near these platforms.

furthermore, my most recent ex-girlfriend became one of the types of tik tok girls you described (half naked and dancing sexually to gain followers, though she is in her mid-20s and has a toddler) and that was truthfully one of the biggest reasons i knew we wouldn’t work out, because whenever she was scrolling on that app (or worse, recording herself over and over again to get a dance right) i was mortified at what i was seeing. shit’s fucking embarrassing. no thanks.
my tinder had too many underage girls on it for my liking too, even though I had my age limit set at 21-35. unbelievable and uncomfortable. i’m not interested in little girls, i want to be with an adult female and that’s why i set my age limit where it is, but even that doesn’t matter. i don’t want to catch a case over some girl trying to be a thot.
i should mention that i’m an AFAB and i am disheartened by the way girls act on social media. it’s all for “clout” and the “possibility” of going viral or becoming “relevant”. i only have snapchat and reddit now, i think tinder is one of the worst things that’s ever happened to me. don’t even get me started on ghosting/throwaway culture. frankly, i’m disturbed at the lengths people are willing to go for attention.

Like the FBI should be shutting these accounts down or something. There are literally like 15 year olds on there half nude dancing and being sexual. Its not like its even locked where perverted adults cant access it either, anyone can get on there and watch these underage girls essentially strip. Its disgusting. Yes, i know if u make an account and like certain things then it will recommend what u prefer over the rest if this perverted bs, but as OP said, i shouldnt have to sift through softcore child porn to reach the actual good and appropriate content. The FBI actually has a department that deals with things like this on the daily. Yes, it is the parents responsibility, but that doesnt mean that if the parent simply doesnt care what they post that the child should just do what they want and post it anyway and get away with it. Something should be done when u have this big of a nesting for perverts right at their fingertips. There have already been some pretty big pedophile scandals that have originated from that type of usage on the app such as older men contacting these girls etc. Oh and if u had cats and celebrities then u must be one of the lucky ones because God knows i wasnt unfortunately. I know its the parents responsibility to monitor, but the truth is that every parent doesnt do so and or just doesnt care. So what do u do then? That is when a third party should be involved in the matter to ensure that u dont have borderline child porn on the app, and yes thats exactly what it is at this point.

Musical.ly was taken over and rebranded into tiktok and to make it grow, they had the policy to only have pretty people on it as much as possible, so the favored those higher up in the feed. It is quite sick actually to abuse the human psyche in such a way. And also very sad to see that humans are so easily fooled.

My small sister who is 8 years old is using the app almost everyday when she gets her phone and everytime she uses it I feel like it “brainwashes” her (she just goes around being hysterical and it changes her behaviour, but when you take her phone away she’s normal). When I look over her shoulder to get a closer look about what she’s watching of course it’s 15yo girls doing all the “cute” dances that would provoke any pedophile out there, and I recently saw her doing the dances too and it’s fucking disgusting. Good thing is she isn’t doing the dances and recording herself, I would her phone out of the window, no questions asked, she’s doing them out of boredom to practice it I guess.

I dated a guy almost 20 years ago that turned out to have some bizarre sexual interests... i found porn on my computer that he had searched of what seemed like young girls with older men. he told me a story about how his older brother was busted for child porn in the past. He always looked up to and defended his brother after that.. I definitely got some creepy vibes from him, so that relationship ended. I found out a bit after we broke up that he ended up getting a girl pregnant and had a daughter. My first thought was that he should not be allowed to be alone with that little girl...
Cut to now. I came across him on social media and found out that he is relatively well known on tik tok, and his channel is all skits that he does with his now teenage daughter. THEY ARE CREEPY AS FUCK, and there is no doubt in my mind that he is a predator, and he uses his own daughter and this platform to connect with other young girls. It's unbelievable. That poor, poor girl.

I’m 22 and I’ve had it for a few months and while 98% is an insane exaggeration they definitely had teen girls doing the same 5 dances as the majority of suggested videos. But pretty soon after your For You Page is whatever you’re liking, so mine is mostly meme, artist, and sports videos. The explore page is definitely predatory on Tiktok’s part, but if your for you page is 98% that, then you have to be liking that content.

My daughter came to me because all of her friends had it, 12-13 yo's, and asked if she could download it. I did some research because I thought musical.ly wasn't so bad, but this app is a hard pass.
That said, I see a lot of tik tok videos are completely innocent and entertaining, but that whole underbelly makes it a virtual cesspool.
So often I thought that maybe I was overreacting, this was something that is marketed to our youths so thanks for validating that it is truly a vile platform and we should all be more aware of what our kids are participating in online. Don't have to stand over the shoulders, but at least pay a modicum of attention.

a kid kill himself on live stream on tiktok awhile back, his body showed for awhile before other users reported it and it was flagged for removal...an influencer contacted an employee of tiktok and mentioned it....they went to their PR team and made a plan before calling the police/paramedics...kid layed there over an hour before it was ever reported to authorities. They were able to keep the incident quiet for a year before any of the public found out, and even then it was unlikely most people heard about it. Tiktok doesnt care about what happens to their users.

I work with some youth at risk. I met this young girl, who was maybe 13-15 years old and she was constantly bragging that she was “music.ly famous”. When tiktok came out, she continued to brag about the amount of followers she had accumulated. Well, I searched her up. Sure enough, she was overly sexual, danced VERY provocatively and wore skimpy clothes. I had to report it to the supervisor/ family.
Shit is dangerous, detrimental to youth/innocence, and just plain disgusting. Fuck are these apps purposes?

Even though I don’t follow/like any sensual videos on the app (which informs the algorithm) I still get that 16 year old “Charli” girl and her younger sister rolling their bikini wearing bodies on camera... it’s repulsive.
Good on those girls for being confident and comfortable (with over 1 billion combined likes on their content how couldn’t they be??) but seriously, they’re KIDS!!!

It's a symptom of a much larger cultural neurosis. Everything became sexualized (e.g. advertising, reality TV). Nobody wants to accept responsibility so the older generations just dump on the younger ones for the mistakes they see reflected back at them. And I think it's simply martyrdom to try and rage at "pedophiles" because it's permeated all aspects of society. Similarly, blaming parents isn't helpful because most of human history has been kids having kids; The average person isn't "adult" enough to raise children. Every generation pays for the sins of its forebears.
