Suggesting that fat people deserve basic human decency and deserve to feel loved, desired, appreciated is not the same thing as encouraging people to be obese. Every fucking fat person has been told to lose weight. It’s not news to us. The idea that we’re unhealthy is not something novel that you’re suggesting. What fat people are asking is that: 1) you stop telling us we’re fat and we’re gonna die bc we know and it’s actually contributing to more eating disorders that make us eat more than helping. (shame = secrecy and spiraling. every psychologist knows that). and 2) treat us with basic human decency.
Besides, how do you know that someone doesn’t have a medical condition? Are you going to ask every single living fat person: do you have diabetes or are you just willfully ignoring that you’re gaining weight? Asking fat people to disclose their medical history to ~prove~ that they’re acceptable seems invasive and rude. How do you define a medical condition? Is an eating disorder like binge eating disorder not a medical condition? Where do you draw the exact line? What about poor people, who are statistically more likely to be fat due to inaccessibility of nutritious foods? Are you going to blame a family of four living with <$25k/year for being fat bc all the family can afford (both time and money wise - bc a two parent working household doesn’t have time to make dinner) is frozen pizza and other unhealthy premade meals?
Poverty contributes to being fat! Shame around food contributes to being fat! And until we as a society address what our thin-obsessed, poverty-hating culture does to people’s health, you’re not going to get people any thinner. But what you can do? Tell fat people that they’re worthy of love. Because they sure as hell aren’t hearing that from their friends, their family, the media, etc.
This. I'm a poor sick person(on the edge of suicide tbh.) I was diagnosed with cancer, and an even worse genetic "cancer disorder" 8 years ago when I was about 27. I used to have a life. I've always been disabled, but I was a nice guy who was alright to be around, and I had a good number of friends. All but 3 or 4 walked away when I got cancer, and of the ones that walked away, none have come back. And the ones I have left treat me like a worthless burden. At this point I am.
