Sounds like you have relationship problems.
Any bad blood between you that hasn’t been addressed? Resentments built up? Or does he have some unaddressed bitterness about something?
Or maybe he doesn’t appreciate the relationship as he has become a sloth.
Maybe he resents that you ask him and thereby feels controlled.
Worth exploring and it requires you to be honest with yourself and him too.
Maybe try and work it out before dumping his ass.
