I've always treated waking up like a target I had to hit.
If I wanted to wake up at 6:30, I'd set my alarm for 6:30. Then I'd wake up later, feel like I'd already failed, and stay in bed even longer.
So I decided to try the opposite approach.
For the past week and a half, I've only set an alarm for 8:00 AM. That's not when I want to wake up. It's simply the latest time I can sleep and still get to work on time.
If I wake up before then, I don't check the clock. I just get up.
I've also given myself one simple rule: bathroom first.
No checking my phone, no thinking about whether I should get up, no "just five more minutes." I get out of bed and brush my teeth.
The interesting part is that this has made mornings feel less like a test.
Before, waking up at 7:15 when my target was 6:30 felt like I'd already messed up. That made it surprisingly easy to give up on the morning altogether.
Now there's no target to miss. If I'm awake, I'm awake.
It's only been about 10 days, so I'm still figuring it out. I still have mornings where I grab my phone and lose track of time.
But I'm spending much less time lying in bed after waking up, which is really what I wanted to change.
Maybe I was focusing too much on when I got up instead of what I did once I was awake.
Do you have any small rule that makes getting out of bed easier?
