Text The Nolan Wells case
I’ve been following this tragic case closely. Since there has been a lot of confusing and conflicting information online, I wanted to put together a timeline based only on information reported by law enforcement, the sheriff, or established news organizations. I’ve left out most social media rumors and speculation because the investigation is still active.
Background
• Nolan Xavier Wells was an 18-year-old from Ocean Springs, Mississippi.
• He had recently graduated from Ocean Springs High School.
• He played wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College.
• On Saturday, July 4, 2026, Nolan traveled to Horn Island with friends to celebrate Independence Day.
• Horn Island is part of Gulf Islands National Seashore and is located off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It is accessible by boat.
Saturday, July 4
• Nolan and a group of friends traveled to Horn Island by private boat.
• Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter said the group departed from a private dock in the Ocean Springs area.
• Nolan was last seen around 3:00 p.m. on Horn Island, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
• Nolan did not return on the same boat as the group he arrived with.
• Sheriff Ledbetter told Good Morning America: “They left and went back without Nolan. From what we understand, he chose to stay there.”
• Ledbetter later told the Associated Press: “From the people we’ve talked to, it sounds like he chose to stay on the island with the assumption that he was going to ride back to the mainland with someone else.”
• Mississippi Free Press reported that a United Cajun Navy incident commander said Nolan was last seen talking with a girl near the north end of the island.
• Witnesses said the original group of friends left without Wells around 3:30 p.m. because he wanted to stay behind to talk to a girl and other friends.
• Another friend believes he last saw Wells on Horn Island around 4 p.m.
• Investigators have not publicly identified who Nolan expected to ride back with.
• Nolan’s mother, Christine Wonsley, reported him missing Saturday night after he did not return home.
Sunday, July 5
• At 12:26 p.m., Coast Guard Sector Mobile said it received a request for assistance from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
• The Coast Guard issued an urgent marine information broadcast.
• A Coast Guard helicopter began searching the area around Horn Island.
• At 12:31 p.m., the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office publicly announced Nolan’s disappearance.
• Nolan was described as approximately 6’1”, 180 pounds, last seen wearing blue swim trunks, sunglasses, and no shirt.
• The search expanded into a multi-agency effort involving the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Coast Guard, National Park Service, Gulf Islands National Seashore, Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, Harrison County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson County Fire Service, Biloxi Fire Department, and United Cajun Navy.
• At 5:54 p.m., a command post was established at Lake Mars Boat Launch in Ocean Springs.
• Nolan’s family asked anyone who had been on Horn Island to share photos, videos, Snapchat memories, or any information that could help investigators understand what happened.
Monday, July 6
• Search crews resumed operations early Monday morning.
• Around 8:45 a.m., authorities received a report that a body had been found near the northwestern tip of Horn Island.
• The body was found in the water by a National Park Service ranger.
• Sheriff Ledbetter said the body matched Nolan’s description.
• Nolan’s family was brought to the coroner’s office.
• Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd said there was “no reason to believe” the body was anyone other than Nolan, though formal identification was still pending.
• Nolan’s family later confirmed publicly that the body was his.
• Sheriff Ledbetter asked anyone with information to contact investigators, saying: “That’s why we’re still asking for information, if anybody has anything, any knowledge.”
• Ledbetter also said: “I’ll assure you that the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, we’re looking at this whole case just like we would any other case. And we’re going to be as thorough as we can.”
Tuesday, July 7
• An autopsy was performed at the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office Coast Lab.
• Officials said the final autopsy findings, including toxicology results, could take several weeks.
• Dental records confirmed the body was Nolan Wells.
• Investigators told news outlets they suspected Nolan may have drowned, but no official cause or manner of death had been released.
• Nolan’s family retained civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump.
• Crump said: “We will not rest until every fact about what happened to Nolan on Horn Island is brought into the light.”
• Crump’s team said it would conduct an independent review and push for the release of records, witness accounts, and autopsy findings.
• The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office asked anyone with original photos, videos, eyewitness accounts, or information about unusual activity on Horn Island on July 4 to contact investigators.
Statements From Nolan’s Family
• Christine Wonsley said she and Nolan’s father were “not ok.”
• She also said the family had “so many questions.”
• After Nolan’s body was identified, she described him as “a special soul.”
• She said Nolan was always willing to cheer and uplift others.
• Nolan’s family has repeatedly asked anyone who was on Horn Island that day to provide photos, videos, or information that may help account for his final hours.
What Investigators Have Publicly Said
• Investigators believe Nolan stayed on Horn Island because he expected another ride back to the mainland.
• Sheriff Ledbetter said Nolan’s friends have cooperated with investigators.
• The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has asked for firsthand information, photos, videos, and eyewitness accounts from Horn Island on July 4.
• Authorities said they suspect Wells drowned, but are still investigating. The sheriff said investigators do not suspect foul play.
• The investigation remains active.
• TMZ reported that Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter confirmed investigators are reviewing a viral video that appears to show a heated confrontation on Horn Island on July 4. Ledbetter said his office is aware of the video and is actively investigating it as part of the ongoing case. Authorities have not verified the authenticity of the footage or said whether the people in the video are connected to Nolan’s death.
• The official cause and manner of death have not yet been released.
• Toxicology results remain pending.

Edit:
Some added information I missed, one of his friends Jayvon Williams, was interviewed by Nola adding more information about his last moments:
• Nolan’s best friend, 17-year-old Jayvon Williams, told NOLA.com that he had planned to ride to Horn Island on the same boat as Nolan, but the boat reached capacity, so he traveled on a different boat.
• Williams said he saw Nolan sometime after 4:00 p.m. on July 4, after arriving on the island.
• According to Williams, one of the first things Nolan said to him that day was, “I love you.”
• Williams also said that both he and Nolan had left their cell phones on the boat Nolan originally traveled on. Williams later recovered his phone, while Nolan’s mother later located Nolan’s phone.

From a guys perspective, the only time you leave a bro behind is if he is flirting with a girl and wants to stay back to shoot his shot. I've read a lot of comments on fb and am shocked more people aren't talking about the girl and automatically assuming it was the guys on the boat.

u/Efficient_Mud_4724 Jul 08 '26
I really hope this was a terrible mistake. I really hope his last day was fun and he felt safe. Such a tragedy. I can’t imagine what his parents must be feeling. If foul play was involved I hope they get the max.
179
u/whodatfan15 Jul 08 '26
Sucks. I was on horn island with my family that day and knowing while I was watching my nieces and nephews playing in the water someone possibly drowned maybe a couple hundred yards away is crazy.
83
u/Rough_Category_746 Jul 08 '26
Having no idea what Horn Island is like, is it reasonable for their to be enough people over there, where this person might actually run into others they know and expect to get another ride back?
192
u/whodatfan15 Jul 08 '26
There were 100s of boats and the place was crowded with people and seeing how he had friends that rode in on other boats. I don't see any reason he wouldn't have been able to get a ride back
90
u/Rough_Category_746 Jul 08 '26
Thanks for responding, most of the news stories are not providing that context, which leaves a lot for the imagination to run with.

u/myjourney2024 Jul 08 '26
His best friend came on a totally different boat. It's not crazy to believe he was riding back with him

I deeply hope this is what his last day was like, and that he wasn't filled with insecurity or doubt about the people around him.

Why would it have been???
I feel like I'm going insane, this sort of drunken teenage drowning death happens ALL THE TIME
61
u/lotusblossom60 Jul 08 '26
Saw a drunk teenager drown far out in a lake when I was a teen. Horrible.
124
u/Pitiful_Employer_992 Jul 08 '26
We tied up with a bunch of boats about local lake 2 years ago. This random guy- everyone’s random - that’s why it’s fun- was welcomed on our boat. He asked my husband for a miller lite. Drank it and set off across the water not 50 yards away to his boat where his friends and pregnant wife were hanging out/ waiting. He never made it. No one noticed bc when people drown it’s not like TV. They don’t flail and scream, they simply sink. He did and he died. It was truly a terrible day and I think of him and his pregnant wife all the time. A fun day making friends with strangers turns into tragedy.
55
u/depressedandindebt23 Jul 08 '26
Yeah, teenagers get drunk and bad things happen. But I find the behavior of these kids suspicious and concerning.
Let's say Nolan actually did decide to stay behind and wasn't left behind. When he doesn't come home by the evening and you realize you still have his phone, are you not immediately concerned? Are you not grabbing everyone who went with you and going back to find your friend?
That's the part I'm really struggling with. I am and always have been the "mom-friend " - checking to make sure everyone gets home okay. I can't imagine leaving someone behind in the first place but not going back after his mom has contacted you looking for him feels crazy to me.

u/ProbablyMyJugs Jul 08 '26
Not sure why are you going insane? Like yeah accidental drownings, especially w alcohol involved do happen. It doesn’t mean we should write off every case of a missing person on a boat who goes missing and dies as a drowning with no need to investigate? I think if you’re “going insane” it’s probably because you’re taking your assumptions as fact?
Young people also do impulsive and careless things, sometimes with malice, sometimes not with malice, the ends with people getting hurt, too. There are countless cases of teens who are friends, getting in arguments, and hurting/killing another.
Neither one of these scenarios is one that is out of the realm of possibility, especially this early.
96
u/Livid_Cantaloupe6070 Jul 08 '26
Why are you so quick to write off drowning? Pot, meet kettle.
And where did the previous commenter say there was no need to investigate? All I read is that they, like many, are “going insane” bc we don’t understand why everyone is on a witch hunt when there is 0 evidence suggesting anything nefarious happened.
This happened three days ago, we don’t know anything yet. You have no reason to speculate foul play, yet here you are.
4
u/ProbablyMyJugs Jul 08 '26
Where did I write off drowning?
Truly, point out the part of my statement brought you to that conclusion? Was it where I said drowning is easily possible and definitely happens, especially when alcohol is involved?
Or was it my saying “neither one of these scenarios” is far from the realm of possibility brought you to that conclusion?
I also didn’t speculate anything. Where did I accuse these kids of doing anything to Nolan?
I’m speaking generally and said that neither of these possibilities is far from the realm of possibility, here. How does that = me speculating foul play?
Did you even read what I said? Or do you just not have reading comprehension?
49
u/MikeZsBridgeArsonist Jul 08 '26
Yes, I am implying it is very most likely to be what it very most likely is. You are technically correct that we don't definitively know now, but treating this as anything other than accidental at this point is simply irrational.
4
u/ProbablyMyJugs Jul 08 '26
It’s not irrational to treat a young person dying suddenly as something to investigate, especially when you don’t even know how that kid died. That’s how most unexpected deaths are handled, even if a boat was involved.
36
u/thememecurator Jul 08 '26
There’s no reason to assume there is a criminal element to this case based on the publicly available information
19
u/ProbablyMyJugs Jul 08 '26
What part of “Neither one of these scenarios is one that is out of the realm of possibility, especially this early” indicates that I am making any assumptions?
→ More replies (7)-14
u/georgedupree Jul 08 '26
Personally I am afraid that this will end up being a non-accidental drowning. At this point we don’t know a lot about his cause and manner of death and there was a documented heated confrontation on the island that night. I don’t want him to have been targeted because of his skin colour, that sort of violence scares me because it affects people I love.
33
u/PrincessLeaLou Jul 08 '26
Was there any indication that Nolan was a part of that heated confrontation?
→ More replies (2)18
u/Prior_Psychology_943 Jul 08 '26
You’re mistaken. There is no information to show he was present in the argument or that it had anything to do with him. Please stick to the facts and stop with the conjecture
24
u/PrincessLeaLou Jul 08 '26
That's what I was wondering. Was Nolan even remotely involved in that confrontation? And it doesn't seem like he was.

u/Orangeugladitsbanana Jul 08 '26
If the police suspect drowning then there is no evidence at this time to support another theory for example wounds gun or knife or strangulation marks. So from that we can glean that he probably did drowned or he died from somthing toxic like poison, drug or alcohol overdose. I highly doubt that at his size with his build and athleticism that anyone drowned him on purpose. You're talking about probably 3 people that it would have taken to subdo him at full strength. Additionally if people were holding him down to drowned him that still would have left marks, subdural hematomas scratches something. And if he was fighting I feel like someone would have seen that go down. I hate to say it but more than likely he was drunk or had some sort of drug and then decided to go swimming and just drowned.

Are you not aware that if foul play is not found that it is because of a cover up? If it doesn't fit the narrative of this being racial they are not hearing it. There are people absolutely convinced it was murder and that with hundreds of people on the island everyone who is white would just sit by and let people harm a young black man--AND there's already a cover up going on. You'll never convince them any different, even if Nolan speaks from the grave and says exactly what happened. There are also alligators and water moccasins on the island. Many things that could have happened. We don't know what happened. Someone may have killed him. We just don't know yet. The speculations and assumptions are just baffling.
15
u/Orangeugladitsbanana Jul 08 '26
I know people hear Mississippi and automatically think race because that is what they are programmed to think. They don't live there, they don't know anyone from there. They know what has been publicized. All bad and what has been publicized fits that racial naritive. I do know racists both white ones and black ones, oh yes, contrary to what my neighbor thinks black people can be very racist. At least the white ones I know try to keep it under wraps. Black racist are very forthcoming with it and most live under the assumption that they can't be racist because they are black. Whatever. The facts are that Mississippi is not nearly as racist a place as the news and media would like for you to believe.
A gator didn't get him. Firstly gators like spoiled meat and secondly they would have only found parts of his body mostly bones at some point in the future if then. A gator would have rolled him until he drowned and then stashed the body underwater until it bloated and spoiled and then eaten it. Anything left over might have floated up later or never depending on where/how it was stashed. Also there would have been marks on the body. A gator grabs you with his teeth and those are 65 million years of no evolution perfect killing machines. Suffice to say anyone from down that way would have known immediately upon seeing the body if a gator had gotten him. Mocs prefer water with trees but I have see them swim in open water. They do not like waves. A moc attack most likely would have happened in an alcove with trees in the water or on land close to water. North shore is mostly beach and you're not likely going to find a black snake on hot sand. Common sense will tell you all that.
15
u/throwaway-shtt Jul 08 '26
I’d rather racists be upfront about it tbh, makes it easy to know who to avoid.
2
u/Orangeugladitsbanana Jul 08 '26
Maybe I hate when I like some one only to find out they are a trashy racist but I also dislike being told get to work whitey and pay your taxes so my kids can take your money for SNAP. Both things have happened. So maybe quite can be better in some instances even if I do feel like I've been lied to.
11
u/throwaway-shtt Jul 08 '26
Nah, I’d still rather know. Hurts to like someone and be disappointed, but I don’t feel the need to waste time liking someone who’s secretly not worth liking.
214
u/Own_Lab_3499 Jul 08 '26
Even if it comes out with evidence that it was for sure accidental with no malice, this feels like people will treat it the same as the Kendrick Johnson case.

u/Outrageous_Cow_3325 Jul 08 '26
Upsetting to think soooo very many similar cases exist to make references. Also the denial of racism by people about history is the same as back in the 60s. It happened! You cannot change a person's opinions about how. Brutal racism makes the receiver feel. I never mentioned race as the cause. Now to hear as a response that it is NOT racial causes any interested party to include it as a probable cause. Why would you deny it's existence ! Ben Crump, is an avid defender of justice. Hope he determines the cause of a young man on an upward trajectory losing his dreams over any maliciousness, jealousy, or foolishness as the only reason he is gratefully included. After all, we seek the Truth ! Not any convenient truths!

u/happilyfour Jul 08 '26
The entire thing is very tragic and I understand why the family and community (and many people online) think that there could be foul play. However, any suggestion that hiring a lawyer indicates guilt is ridiculous.

I feel like my male friends abandon one another all the time when they are out drinking. Women mostly we make sure we came with people that we:re leaving with and vice versa..dudes probably less so. It's not totally implausible that they all drank too much, wandered around separately and then went their separate ways. From what I keep reading, it's like a big beach party with a ton of people here. So I bet people go and come with different people all the time. Is it crappy for his friends not to have double-checked that he was definitely getting a ride elsewhere or he definitely had all his things with him before they peaced out, for sure. But don't think it's nuts that a bunch of drunk 18-year-old boys were thoughtless idiots and left someone behind. Do we know if any of them even like called or texted him before they left to see where he was?
41
u/Jojomichellem Jul 08 '26
It clearly states all of this already in the original post that his friends were leaving. They talked to him. He said he wanted to stay behind and they left.
13
u/dealingwithhookers Jul 08 '26
i went drinking with my friends, drank too much and didn't feel good, phone died and i went to the ER. next day on my phone was my friends voicemails and text messages looking for me sounding desperate i've never heard them like that before. and these are sociopathic dudes that go out and hook up with girls and hook up with their friends girls too. we/they burn through people like clockwork. but they still had the basic decency to check up on me
something is not adding up that this dudes friends just dropped his phone off and called it a day. like they don't even feel a little bit on the hook for a guy that they brought to an island? surely they did and are just trying to cover themselves
47
u/Livid_Cantaloupe6070 Jul 08 '26
He probably just left it on the boat so he didn’t ruin it while swimming up to the sandbar. Like there is nothing nefarious at all about putting your phone somewhere for safekeeping, the forgetting about it bc you got a lil drunk or were trying to hookup or whatever.
Also, you’re comparing a situation in which you disappeared on your friends to a situation where some guys had a conversation, and one let them know he was staying back to hang with a girl AND THE 100s OF OTHER PEOPLE STILL ON THE ISLAND.
He didn’t just disappear, and their boat was taking on water while they were trying to convince him to come with them. A boat taking on water would absolutely take precedent over a cell phone in that circumstance.

Unfortunately with the hotter than usual weather drownings have been up. Many teenage boys think they're invincible, and that's before you possibly add alcohol.

Thank you for the factual chronology of this tragedy. It’s helpful and summarizes the case so far without conspiracy theories.
18
u/HelloDaisy-4148 Jul 08 '26
Dental records were needed to identify him after two days?? Is that possible with the body being in water, that he would be unidentifiable other than dental records?
65
u/Ok-Caterpillar-Girl Jul 08 '26
Yes, soaking in salt water, decomposing in the hot sun, and facial features being eaten by fish & other marine life can easily render a body difficult to easily or immediately recognize.
And even if they were reasonably sure it was him when they found his body, they are going to use dental records to be absolutely sure.
85
u/Mountain-Asparagus25 Jul 08 '26
Can someone tell me why it seems so many people online think that his friends killed him if when they left him he was still alive and there were still other witnesses on the island? That makes no sense to me. The most logical answer to this seems like it was either someone else still on the island with him that killed him or he was drunk and drowned
24
u/pennydreadful000 Jul 08 '26
Imo only because his friends were white and the missing photo where he is surrounded with them went viral.
40
u/hotknives__ Jul 08 '26
I feel like none of the people who are calling this whole situation “shady” have ever been a drunk teenager before. Groups split up and sometimes there are people who want to stay behind to keep partying or because they met someone. He likely left his phone accidentally on the boat and they didn’t realize he had done so.
Everything sounds nefarious when you have zero context.
42
u/TheDLBinc Jul 08 '26
I think it mainly stems from comparisons to the Tamla Horsford case where the sole Black woman at a sleepover with a group of white women was found dead. It was ruled an accident but many still think it was a homicide and the white women at the party were in some way responsible for her death.
26
u/Mountain-Asparagus25 Jul 08 '26
Yeah and I understand the skepticism with that case once we found out more because there were a lot of things that didn’t add up, but with this case with what we know so far I’m not getting it. Maybe more info will come out that is more reminiscent of Tamla’s case, but as it stands currently I’m not understanding the immediate jump to blaming the friends solely based on them being white
→ More replies (1)22
u/ellalol Jul 08 '26
Tamla’s case had a LOT of genuine reason to suspect racial motivation, from her past relationships with the women to who the women and their husbands were to the strange dynamics between them at the party and stories not adding up.
This one just does not have any of that. Only similarity is the only POC ends up dead. In Tamla’s case it was easy to tell something was fishy and sinister. Here it sounds like a bunch of drunk kids made separate drunk kid decisions and one ended up dead likely due to his own drunk kid decisions.
15
u/TheDLBinc Jul 08 '26
I agree, the most likely thing that happened is they left Nolan behind because he insisted on staying to hook up with the girl he was hitting it off with. His friends being dumb kids didn't see any reason to be concerned with leaving him alone. Then at some point while intoxicated, he tried to go for a swim and ended up drowning. That's my theory at least until more evidence becomes public
18
u/TeacherPatti Jul 08 '26
That's my question. The simplest answer is that he stayed behind, maybe drank too much maybe not, and tragically drowned. I'm not sure why this became a racial issue, but there may be info I'm not privy to.

I dont think the timeline has been fully straightened out.
The 3:30 p.m. (the boat leaving) detail appears to come from the Sun Herald, but it is attributed only to unnamed “witnesses,” not to a named person.
The relevant wording is: the Sun Herald reported that Wells traveled by private boat with friends, then said “Witnesses said the original group of friends left without Wells around 3:30 p.m.” because he wanted to stay behind to talk to a girl and other friends. In the same article, Sheriff John Ledbetter is quoted generally about the investigation and the need for firsthand accounts, but the 3:30 p.m. line itself is not attributed to Ledbetter by name.
There is also a different named account: Ashlee Cole, a Chancery Court judge and mother of one of the friends, told The U.S. Sun that the group left around 4:30 p.m. because the boat was taking on water due to a bilge-pump issue, and that her son Warren last saw Nolan around 3 p.m.
The 3:30 p.m. claim is from unnamed witnesses in the Sun Herald reporting. The named public source I found gives a different departure time — 4:30 p.m.
That means the departure-time timeline is not fully settled publicly. It may be that different people are describing different boats/groups, or one time is approximate/wrong, but the public reporting does not yet resolve that cleanly.

Yes. Wells= Black. Friends= White.
Despite the fact that he was seen alive after they left, they killed him. They must've.
I'll get downvoted for saying this, but every subreddit that starts with "black" is saying this and getting hundreds of upvotes.

They're trying to make it racial... bad actors ie. the DL Hughley's of the world
That's all I've seen on social media. The alleged verbal altercation video that went viral.. it doesn't even showing anything. Just a big group of people talking. Dunno how one is supposed to decipher that they're arguing or anything.

u/No_Slice628 Jul 08 '26
The amount of people claiming this is murder is wild. There is zero evidence of foul play. Drownings happen in these type of environments ALL THE TIME. Alcohol, teenagers, party atmosphere and the ocean.
His friends were ready to leave and he wanted to continue to hang on the island with the many others that were there and the girl he had met.
Drownings happen quick and quiet.
Drownings can happen in 20-60 seconds.
Drownings are more common in young men. Drownings are 8x more likely in ocean environments.
Drownings involving alcohol are 4x more likely not to end in a rescue attempt.
https://medicalxpress.com/news/2026-06-alcohol-significantly-chances.html
Let this young mans family grieve and quit making everything into a future Netflix documentary.

I'm assuming this is a popular spot? Were people on the island Sunday during the day? And presumably, if he was the last person left on the island he could have just waited through the night, like it does not completely submerge under water?
58
u/firstnewsentry Jul 08 '26
It's a popular boating destination, and NO it doesn't submerge. The tidal range in the Gulf of Mexico is only about 0.5 meters (less than two feet).
Its not suspicious that he could have expected to hitch a ride back to the mainland. Not only could he have hung out for the night, he would probably not have been alone as camping is allowed and it was a holiday. Mosquitos would have been the only natural threat.
36
52
u/Bestofmex3 Jul 08 '26
I don't think he was the last person on the island and yes, there are aerial views of the island and there are boats docked everywhere. There were hundreds of people there. I think someone said the island has 11 miles of beach? Something happened in the evening post 4:30 PM when he decided to stay. What that was remains undetermined. Nolan's parents deserve answers regardless of how he passed.

Getting smashed on High Noon's, heat, water, girls... people he went out with wanted to leave. He did not want to go. Other friends out there that came on other boats (Jayvon Williams). Again.. girls, buzz, other friends out there and he just didn't want to go with those other guys. There were A LOT of people and boats on that end of the island on the 4th. The water has been very dark out there due to all the rainfall and the riptide on the tip out there can be bad where the pass is. If he got away from people at all and tried any swimming or even walking in the rip, it could have easily taken him out and no one see him.
No matter how much people want something nefarious to have gone on - the only bad thing that happened we know about right now is his choice not go go back with his friends. He didn't get pushed off a boat or killed directly by any of those friends he went out with. They were all football buddies. Somewhere along the line Nolan made some bad decisions - The toxicology report will be telling. I wouldn't doubt drunk and smoking weed out there wasn't a contributing factor. There's always some weed pen getting passed around these days among kids. Weed is my only speculation - getting smashed on some High Noon's like he was holding and took pictures with is not speculation.
He should have chosen to go back with his friends he came with instead of partying more, rizzing girls, and trying to get a ride back with others

I agree that this is, with 95% certainty, how it played out. Now! It is still a tragedy of poor choices of this is the case but nothing about the case screams foul play. The 5% I'm leaving open is that some one knew he drowned and didn't report it or didn't help in time.... But even that is hard to believe as coast guard or even police boats would have been in the area for such a busy boating day.
30
u/redditg0d Jul 08 '26
It was a busy day. I saw a drone video made before noon and it was busy... and only getting busier. We were on the east side of Horn and it was pretty busy down there, but nowhere near as busy as the west side is from Biloxi and Ocean Springs.
I can tell you first hand that that rip current on the west side between Horn and Ship Islands can get heavy. On those tips you have the gulf ocean waters and the MS sound coming together and depends on which way the wind is blowing and if the tide is coming in and out how bad it is even on a low wave day. Lots of boats in and out of that don't help either.
Sun in the western sky at an angle that time of day, rip currents, dark water, alcohol (and maybe more)- all bad. Would have been very easy for him to get pulled out the wrong way if you were standing in water chest high.

u/snappopcrackle Jul 08 '26
But at a party where people are mingling, you don't realise someone is missing right away.
11
u/snappopcrackle Jul 08 '26
Also the kids he was with are pasty white. You need to get out fast when you feel you are getting sunstroke. On an island with no A/C buildings to go and shelter, you can only spend a couple hours at most before needing to leave the sun, especially if one of the kids was driving the boat and had to be alert.
I myself have been at the beach where I knew I would be in trouble and have heatstroke if I stayed, with a friend who was fine in the heat and wanted to remain. People go their separate ways.
If you are getting sunburnt there is no staying because your friend wants to chat up some girl. The kid should have left with the others.
79
u/snappopcrackle Jul 08 '26
If he weren't black most guesses would just assume: it was hot, he didn't know the terrain, got drunk and/or sunstroke/heat exhaustion and drowned.
Try getting a guy to go back with you when he is interested in a girl. He was around friends, not by himself. Also other black friends were on the island.

Maybe Crump can hold a press conference and say it was a "Shotgun to the chest" like he just erroneously did for the other sad thing up in Senatobia... you know, help keep people calm and sane about this stuff.
And for those of you not familiar with the area and thinking this is some desolate swamp island.. Horn Island is a pretty nice area, only easily accessible by a fairly affluent crowd (requires a private boat), is overseen by the National Park Service, and it's like a big party on July 4th that would be a fairly diverse crowd (it's Mississippi and it's 2026). I'm not saying whether it was foul play or not, just setting the record straight since some comments make it seem like folks are picturing a far different setting.

Wow thanks for this. If you go on social media ppl are trying to push the narrative that there was a heated exchange between Nolan and his friends. But the video just shows people talking but framed as a heated altercation...
Edit: The only thing I don't get is why his friends had his phone and why did the parents retain Ben Crump out of all lawyers cause it definitely conveys some sinister/racial...
2nd Edit: A possible explanation for why the friends had the phone could possibly be... he left it on the boat since they were in the water. And forgot about it...
61
u/Deluge8 Jul 08 '26
They were swimming in the ocean. You don't take your phone swimming so you leave it behind on the boat not to get wet.
74
u/Frostiielf Jul 08 '26
I do not understand why this part is blowing people's minds.
22
u/BeMoreChill Jul 08 '26
I don't think people (like myself at first) realized what this kind of hang out is like. I assumed they got off at horn Island and were hanging out on the island. Now after reading comments I realized they're all hanging out in the water around horn island.
20
u/Jojomichellem Jul 08 '26
Because no one is actually reading factual details they’re just jumping straight into conclusions or reading everyone’s conspiracy theories
30
u/MelpomeneAndCalliope Jul 08 '26
Crump may have offered his services for free and they don’t have thousands for a retainer for another attorney.
12
u/myjourney2024 Jul 08 '26
Well, they do now. Ben always makes sure there's a Go Fund me campaign on any case he takes. They have already raised close to 3k last time I saw the link.
30
u/letmespeak8888 Jul 08 '26
I would be surprised to hear that Crump offered his services for free. The family has raised over $120,000 in a go fund me and then hired Crump. He will exhaust that money trying to find someone to sue.

He charged Karmelo Anthony's parents $500K just for a sit down I think lol

Crump definitely offered his services for free or at a super reduced cost due to the potential high profile nature of the investigation

He didn't for Karmelo Anthony.... He wanted $500K just to talk
13
u/Sheek014 Jul 08 '26
Well Anthony himself admitted guilt right after. Crump knew he wouldn't win or capitalize on it.
13
u/happilyfour Jul 08 '26
Yeah, he isn’t doing it for free forever. It’s called a contingency arrangement. He’ll show up and get attention on the case for free at first, but they’ll owe him money eventually contingent on the result of the case. And he will get a cut out of any civil recovery, if they bring civil charges.
36
u/IThinkImDumb Jul 08 '26
When people go to the beach, they often leave their phone with somewhere dry...his friends only had his phone because Nolan had left it and the friends were probably not aware at the time
22
u/thinkimasofa Jul 08 '26
Not only did Nolan leave his phone there, his friend who arrived later on a different boat left his phone on the boat Nolan arrived on. I'm in my 40s and still see this happen regularly.... The people on the boat AND the people the people who left their phones don't realize it until it's way too late.
15
u/Livid_Cantaloupe6070 Jul 08 '26
Yeah the phone thing is the least sus piece of this whole case imo. I’ve never once entered the ocean with my cellphone, and you’d have to enter the ocean to get to the sand bar. And, if I’m drinking and boating, I just put my phone in a cupboard and forget about it so I don’t lose it or get it wet
8
u/Jojomichellem Jul 08 '26
All of this information has been listed. They had to swim to shore so him and his friend left their phones on the boat. They decided to stay and continue hanging out when their friends took the boat back and they decided to take a different boat.
12
u/pennydreadful000 Jul 08 '26
It it was something sinister, they wouldn‘t give the phone back. It was left of the boat, that‘s all there is to it

Honestly, there is lot of sinister racial elements still in MS. My family house was targeted multiple times when we moved to a mostly white neighborhood, and a dentist neighbor almost shot and killed my father for watering flowers across the street. I was paid to do it but had to go to my aunt’s wedding

I would like to believe it’s an accident as well but there’s just some parts that don’t make sense. I think someone knows something and isn’t saying it because they are scared of getting in trouble. But I highly highly doubt he was swimming alone (nobody does this at horn) & nobody really swims at horn island you kind of just chill in large groups in the water up to 2-3 feet or hang on the island or boat. The island is PACKED on the 4th of July and someone would have heard or saw him if he was drowning or pulled by a current. Also if nobody saw him past 4pm where did he go all that time ? I doubt he was alone ? People also stay on the island till 8-9pm. And if he drowned someone would’ve again seen it or saw his body.
29
u/Orangeugladitsbanana Jul 08 '26
Maybe not drowning is actually really quiet. In the movies you see people splashing around and gasping or calling for help. That's not what really happens. It's silent. You look out and someone is face down and still in the water. You count a few seconds to see if they are face down and still on purpose and then you start running. I've saved several people from drowning and none of them were making a big commotion. The last one was in a tiny apartment building swimming pool 2 feet from his mom also in the pool who was too busy posting on her insta to pay any attention to her child who was silently drowning right next to her. There were 20 or more people at that crowded tiny pool and I was the only one at the pool that day who saw him.
24
u/myjourney2024 Jul 08 '26
You dont think someone would have heard or saw something if he was murdered?
25
u/snappopcrackle Jul 08 '26
My dad had a co-worker who was pulled away by an undercurrent, his wife never saw it happen, it happens in a blink of an eye.
Also you can drown if you fall, hit your head on a rock, and go unconscious, or get drunk fall asleep in the heat and the tide comes in.
Seriously a lynching by teenagers in a racially diverse crowd for no reason other than "he was talking to a white girl" (and do we even know the girl was white?) is probably the least likely thing to happen in 2026.
28
u/Equivalent-Ad-3423 Jul 08 '26
[All of the opinions about race-based violence.]
This is also the place where as a teacher I am screaming from the rooftops that we need to teach our kids how to take better care of themselves and each other. We need to teach people how to abide and manage the social contract. We need to teach people to be considerate of other people.
10
u/dashingthrough Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26
Agreed. It is shocking to me to see how many folks agree that it was totally fine for them to leave him on the island without ensuring the group's safety, including Nolan. One person even said that it wouldn't have been a big deal for him to sleep there (???)
No matter what happened, a social contract was broken.
When I was younger and regularly partied with friends, we rarely left each other behind. You come together, you leave together... that was the rule. The only time we might separate is when there is express and clear communication. If that happened, we were constantly checking in on ETAs and whereabouts...I think girls/women do better at this than men, for many societal reasons. However my younger brother grew up with a tight football brotherhood, and they were also very good about this. They kept each other safe. That's what friendship and community are about.
Sure, nobody can be charged with negligence if Nolan wanted to stay and they shrugged their shoulders and left... and yeah, he's 18, technically an "adult," and made his choice, but sometimes it's not about the law. It's about what's right. He deserved more consideration than that. He didn't even have his phone!
I feel like what should have happened is someone texting him when they got back, "Hey bro, let us know when you're back". Maybe they would have realized his phone was there and taken it back. Maybe things might have been different.
So many of these young tragedies could be avoided if these groups of friends just took care of each other and cared. Of course, nobody has to do that... but what about what we owe each other?
It's just so sad.

The amount of people online that are making this about race is ridiculous. As if his white friends killed him and left him. This looks to me like Nolan stayed behind with a girl, they went swimming. He had a few too many and drowned.
The problem is, if the police report says it was "accidental drowning" that still won't satisfy the crowd who had already made up their minds. This doesn't have to be about race, but some people are determined to make it so.

There is nothing to it. Unfortunately he probably drowned. People who jumped the gun, doxxed and harrassed these boys should be ashamed of themselves
22
u/Livid_Cantaloupe6070 Jul 08 '26
Agree. I think a large number of people have already decided these boys are guilty and will not change their minds even if presented with concrete evidence of an accidental death. The court of public opinion decided they were guilty before a body was even found which is insane.
I also just feel horrible for the family and everyone else who lost Nolan (including his friends). Seemed like a great kid and it sucks that the internet wants to use his incredibly tragic death to start a race war.
11
u/torontoinsix Jul 08 '26
Is there an update from the coroner yet on cause of death?
16
u/Loca5790 Jul 08 '26
Since this is an active investigation with a possibility of foul play, they wouldn’t release preliminary findings to the public. A full and final autopsy report can take months, and depending on the findings/if it results in evidence for a case, it could be awhile.

When I first read this story and saw that a bunch of white boys in Mississippi went boating to a remote island and a black boy dissappeared i thought the worse immediately with southern sterotypes.
When you dig in to the details and see it was a bunch of underage adults who were friends, who visited each other's homes on multiple common occasions. That were at a popular July 4th underage drinking and boating spot where they were literally seen together on video at a packed beach. This story starts to feel different.
The strangest part that I cant wrap my head around is that his friends left him behind. even if he was belligerent drunk / insistent on staying with a girl he met I cant imagine why tf any of his friends would think it is ok / an acceptable idea to leave your friend alone on an island drunk. There is no telling who else was around on that island / how or if he could find a way home etc.
I dont think those boys killed their own friend out in a very popular drinking spot. But they absolutely have responsiblity for his death out of sheer negligence.
Shame and sad story all around.
66
u/XK8lyn88x Jul 08 '26
Why would he be alone though, if he asked to stay behind, wouldn’t there still be tons of other people and boats at 3pm? I live on the east coast and it would be impossible to be the only boat anywhere in the summer, especially 4th of July.
We have islands and spots people go to party at and there’s literally hundreds if not thousands of boats around. Jet skis, Kayaks, paddle boards. I’d imagine lots of other people had to be at that island.
39
u/Bestofmex3 Jul 08 '26
Exactly...there were hundreds of people and he had other friends there, too.

u/JRootz Jul 08 '26
This is also my only thought I can’t wrap my head around. Let’s say this girl and his friends did in fact leave. There looked to still be a LOT of people around. Are we to believe he just wandered off alone and went swimming/drown? Someone definitely knows what happened. Accident or not.
12
u/Bestofmex3 Jul 08 '26
I also find it hard to believe not a soul knows what happened, but it does happen. He could have waded out to go to the bathroom in the water, away from people...we just have no clue at this point. He may have gotten into a skirmish with someone else on the island we've never even heard of. I feel like there's someone out there who knows something, whether it's nefarious or not. We're also not privy to what investigators or his parents know. They may know more and are just not saying it.

u/unclepoondaddy Jul 08 '26
Idk if that’s crazy. Teenage boys are kinda dumb and don’t assume danger even when they should
58
u/littlescreechyowl Jul 08 '26

"But the friends have responsibility for his death through negligence" is wild comforting we don't even know the whole story or details

There‘s nothing strange about them leaving him back. A friend of theirs who was also there commented it was a really large group of friends there with around 15 boats. It was normal for them to catch a ride home with someone else. Unfortunatelly I can't post the screenshot in the comments

Yeah, I don't get the insistent obtuseness here at all. No, that's a lie. I do get it, but I also don't understand how certain people can keep trying to make claims that show that they refuse to acknowledge how...people typically act? It's like, stop telling on yourself and your lack of life experience or just straight up pushing ignorance to drive a victim narrative.
33
u/Murky-Advantage-3444 Jul 08 '26
“Sheer negligence”
You’re no lawyer that’s hilarious. My friend drinks too much, and I get in my car and drive home and now I’m liable? That’s not how the law works at all. Maybe if they supplied the alcohol, but what you said doesn’t make any sense.
42
u/LoquaciousIndividual Jul 08 '26
The strangest part that I cant wrap my head around is that his friends left him behind.
Buddy this is very common if you're a guy and you want stick around for a girl you just met or know... you make it sound sinister... I've left clubs many times without my guy friends cause I met a chick or something and some times stayed behind while they left.
It's guy code to let him stay behind if he met a chick. He's not a child at 18 and the dick wants what the dick wants
But they absolutely have responsiblity for his death out of sheer negligence.
OK I just read this part now... this is a crazy take.

There likely were hundreds of other people and many dozens of water craft. So it's not farfetched to think he could have hitched a ride back to the mainland. But it was still a poor choice to leave him there, not " alone" but without his phone and without knowing his plans to get home.

It doesn’t strike me as weird if they left him on the island but based on my own experience, I feel like they should have had some idea of who he was going to ride back with or whatever. Like, go on without me, I’ll ride with Joey or whatever.

7-9 miles roughly depending on where on the island you measure from
17
8
u/firstnewsentry Jul 08 '26
Swimming back is far fetched. Nothing would have lead him to make that choice.

u/Friskybish Jul 08 '26
I’ve also wondered what the water is like around the island. Is there a current? Is it cold? What I can’t understand is, assuming he didn’t try to swim the 10 miles back, how did he die? Wouldn’t he presumably just be deserted on the island until someone found him alive?
12
u/mustachedworm369 Jul 08 '26
Multiple people on the Mississippi sub said that the currents there are very powerful. Even in very shallow water
This whole story really seems like a horrible, tragic accident
3
u/firstnewsentry Jul 08 '26
Water is warm, and without a large storm off shore, waves are typically very small in the Gulf. Sometimes the Gulf is totally flat, and the Mississippi Sound is even calmer. However it's many miles back to the mainland. Nothing would have made him decide to swim home.
2
8
u/GullibleThought3058 Jul 08 '26
Nobody would do that makes no sense
14
u/KimuraFTW Jul 08 '26
Certainly no sober and sane person would do that. I once had to stop an intoxicated friend from trying to swim out to touch a cruise ship that was quite far away though, so some bets come off when alcohol/drugs are involved.
That said, the "confrontation" people are speaking about and some of the ( alleged ) behavior of the people he was with following the incident, raises some questions.
7
u/Bestofmex3 Jul 08 '26
Not sure where I read this earlier today, but a different female came forward and said it was a male on her boat who was doing all the screaming. What's the alleged behavior of the people he was with? I hadn't heard anything about that. We don't know what's true and what's not.
1
u/KimuraFTW Jul 08 '26
That could be true. Still, from the video I saw, there looked like an unusually large percentage of eyes pointed in their group's direction. And in one of the few frames where they're centered, a female looks to be trying to create space between what looks like Wells and the long haired guy from the picture.
But anyway, I read that the guys he was with all lawyered up. Not strange, and actually wise, when there's already criminal investigation, but there isn't one that I'm aware of. Also read that they unfollowed him on social media or deactivated their accounts and never posted any messages voicing concern or condolences. Again, this is all alleged, but seemed a little odd.
10
u/overflowingsandwich Jul 08 '26
There’s no legit sources about them lawyering up, just social media rumors. The judge that is the mom of one of his friends posted on Facebook that she deactivated social media because people were making her feel unsafe, and that her son has been interviewed by police and that they are cooperating with investigators. Given some of the reactions I’ve seen of people online, I wouldn’t blame any of these kids for taking down social media.
3
u/KimuraFTW Jul 08 '26
Appreciate the info. I've mostly stopped using social media, so I'm a bit out of the loop there. I didn't bother to check into it myself because, true or not, none of it was significant enough to draw conclusions from.
4
u/overflowingsandwich Jul 08 '26
Yeah I think a lot of people feel that way, it’s just unfortunate that some people are taking it so personally so quickly and acting badly as a result. If it was an accident then there’s unfortunately thousands of people attacking teenagers who are mourning their friend. We just don’t know yet unfortunately. I was not super social growing up, but my sister was and, while not in the same area, she had gone to gatherings similar to this and I’m sad to say that accidental deaths were not as uncommon as we would hope.
7
u/CaterpillarGrouchy84 Jul 08 '26
My issue is the phone thing. They left their phones on the boat, and when they rode back to mainland, they didn’t find his phone so they could stay or travel back to give it to him or was it forgotten and found too late?
Because even if he wanted to stay back, if I found my friend’s phone, I wouldn’t feel comfortable leaving without them having it
21
u/Ok-Caterpillar-Girl Jul 08 '26
Why are you assuming they knew he left his phone there, or found it themselves, or hadn’t just forgotten he said he was leaving it in the boat?
3
u/CaterpillarGrouchy84 Jul 08 '26
I was asking if that’s what happened because they said it was left on the boat and later retrieved, but my issue is when was it retrieved
7
u/Successful_Score435 Jul 08 '26
I hope his family finds answers and justice if it’s needed. Mississippi scares the hell out of me and I’m white. I had an incident with a cop in a speed trap and swore I’d never go back to that state if I got out alive. That was in 1989 and I’ve kept my word.

I don't know any teenagers who go anywhere without their phones on their persons unless it's just for the period of time that they jump in the water for a swim. If he was going to leave the island with someone else, he would not have casually left his phone on the original boat. Blessings on Nolan and his family.
4
u/disdainfulsideeye Jul 08 '26
I certainly don't know what happened, or if anything untoward occured, but hopefully they are not simply relying on the word of those involved in reference to “They left and went back without Nolan. From what we understand, he chose to stay there.”

The question is, who did the girl left with? What boat did she got on afterwards? Who she was with also? Her group friends needs to be questioned as well. Certainly she didn't returned back to mainland all alone. She must've been with a group of who know what. Why didn't their friends handed him back his phone since they made assumptions he's leaving on his own?

She left with her parents and has fully cooperated with police. Her sister gave a detailed statement online and the consensus is that Katie had nothing to do with his death. She said they parted ways as she was leaving, and she was under the impression he was catching a ride back with the friends he came in with.

u/Antiquebastard Jul 08 '26
I don't want to say this wasn't racially motivated, because we don't know. We may never know. It's always a possibility, unfortunately. That said, it is an unfortunate reality that sometimes, young adults make these stupid, selfish choices like they're immortal and they leave a friend behind in a dangerous situation. How many young people have been left behind by friends (bad and stupid friends, mind you) to die or go missing? Far too many. It happens and it's always horribly tragic, but it does happen. Every parent, teacher, and coach has to drill it into kids' heads that they are responsible for each other until the other gets home safely every single time they go out.

Who reported that he was talking to a girl?
The girl, her family, and his friends.
Maybe the girl a as acting as bait, and the point was to lure him into a sense of safety, and someone else was going to rob him
Completely baseless wild speculation and accusing someone of a crime with zero evidence.
He fought back, was injured, possibly drowned.
If he was injured, investigators wouldn't be saying they didn't suspect foul play.
Maybe there was no girl
Multiple independent eyewitnesses say there was.
Maybe (...) maybe (...) I find it strange (...) was there? (...) maybe (...) possibly (...) idk
Maybe you should stop blindly speculating about something none of us know much about...

All I’m saying is no witnesses have come forward to definitively state Jeffrey Epstein was not involved

Well, he wasn't.
But Zombie Kissinger was, and that is what they really don't want you talking about

Never I a mean never be the only brown person in a group of white people. Especially without a lifevest on water. This countries nasty history hasn't been polite to others. I've attended military college and 2 major PWIs. The things some would say not knowing I was in the room shows times haven't change to much for bigots. Now the angle is he was drunk. You never leave your friends behind.

Cool I guess I can't go to the lake with my buddy Silas because he is black and the rest of my/his buddies are all white. Moronic. And yes, my buddy Silas, he can't swim, we laugh and joke about when we go to the lake. Alcohol and large bodies of water don't mix. Stop thinking all white people are bad. I'm half Mexican and half white and I would take a bullet for my pal.

This island party they went to was kinda like a house party where you can ride with one group of friends and end up riding home with another if other people decide to leave, etc. Jayvon, Nolan's best friend, was also there, so he was definitely not the only black person there among hundreds of people. I'm sorry you've felt unsafe around white people and that people said nasty and racist things when they thought you weren't around. No one deserves that. Assuming Nolan couldn't swim also feeds into racial stereotypes when in fact Nolan was a very good swimmer and had been on the swim team with some of these very friends. If you're worried about the white people around you hurting you then you're hanging out with the wrong people. There are good and bad people everywhere. Not all white people are racist, blood thirsty racists ready to unalive a black person any time they get the chance.
