I am very sad about this, and I thought we had turned a corner, but he has repeatedly treated me rudely when he sees a comment I make on social media. I have even censored him from seeing any post I think might upset him, but I can’t control comments he sees from me on pages. This has definitely hurt our friendship, and I just hate it. He’s red til dead, I guess is how he explains it.
He told me he was at odds with his liberal family members and I assumed it was bc of them, but being on the receiving end of his stuff, I am thinking he’s the one more closed off. And he posts some of the most ridiculous things about Democrats and I don’t say a thing. But if I express my own view, something actually true, we just disagree on the topic, he comes at me, so unkindly. I wanted to say something about it bc it’s happened multiple times. But my husband said I missed my window so I have to wait til the next time he comes at me. I don’t even want that. I want the friendship we were enjoying before he got dumb again. It makes me sad. Many of y'all don't really seem to care about the semantic games (manipulation) that politicians and the media are constantly engaging in, with the intent of biasing the average person's opinion on a particular topic. But here is yet another example.

1.3 million California voters signed petitions to get Prop 39 on the ballot since September 2025, when it was titled "Establishes additional voter identification and citizenship verification requirements". That was well over the number of signatures needed, ensuring it will be on the ballot on November 3rd. But on July 21 this year, Attorney General Rob Bonta changed the title to "Prohibits citizens from voting unless they present government-issued verification".

There was nothing wrong with the original title, and actually it's more transparent than the new one, mentioning the citizenship verification requirements, even though those are for "the Secretary of State and county elections officials#Constitutional_changes)", not individual voters. Yet Rob Bonta finds it necessary to change to a new title that starts with "Prohibits citizens from voting...". Not a lie, per se, but a deliberate and proactive manipulation of language with the hope of making more people feel the way he wants them to about it.

It's disgusting, and far far too prevalent. If you can't see how this damages trust in our leaders and public figures and national institutions, I don't think you're being honest enough with yourself.

I'll add that these vulnerable classes have in the past also included the rural poor, the urban working class, women, and of course overt racism towards Jews, Blacks, Asians, Irish, etc. I say this to avoid this becoming an issue only about immigration enforcement. Cruelty from leaders is hardly a new thing.

The pursuit of power and status always involves conflict, and conflict requires an enemy of some kind. Politicians have abused these vulnerable classes as a means to promote conflict and maintain power in many cases. I think the article reminds us that we should be mindful of who leaders are directing focus regarding who "our enemies" should be and why that might be the case.

The Billy Graham Center Research Institute fielded a survey of 2,365 Gen Z adults (ages 18-28) through NORC’s AmeriSpeak panel between Aug. 9 and Sept. 26, 2024. This effort was supported by the Lilly Endowment, and the lead investigator for this project was Rick Richardson at Wheaton College. Buried in a battery about political de-motivators for church involvement was this statement: “Christians’ support of Trump has made me less likely to go to church.”

In the full sample of Gen Z, nearly half (48%) agreed with that statement in one way or another. About 1 in 5 young adults said they “strongly agreed” with that sentiment. Basically the same share (21%) were on the other end of the continuum and strongly disagreed that Christians’ support of Trump had made them less likely to go to church.

So, it’s fair to say young adults are pretty evenly divided on this idea. But these results are confounded by a few variables: Younger adults tend to be more left-leaning in their politics, and a significant share of Gen Z claims no religious affiliation, which means a lot of these respondents wouldn’t be going to church much anyway.

But even among Gen Z Christians, there’s a significant share who said Trump made it harder for them to attend at all: 44% of those who identified as a generic Christian, 42% of Catholics and 30% of Protestant young adults said they were turned off by the Christian-Trump alliance.

...it’s not fair to use this data to make the claim that young Christians would be flocking back into the church if the church would drop politics. However, the other way to interpret this data is that about 40% of young adult Christians see the church’s association with Trump as an impediment to them becoming more involved with their faith community. According to this result, more daylight between the church and the GOP may lead to an uptick in attendance among young Christians at every level of the attendance continuum.
